Hi Starz
Your team looks a tad risky to me:
History of injuries/missed a lot of games last year:
Hodge
Ellis
Buckley
Maguire
Palmer
Cox
Hill
Higgins
Walker
Late 20's (and therefore increased chance of niggling injuries):
Enright*
Fisher*
Hayes
Cox
Hill
Pav*
*Haven't missed many games recently so maybe I’m being too harsh.
Just my opinion, but I would limit the number of players in those categories to reduce the chance of donuts.

starz

yeh i know but to get the good picks it involves getting those that had a bad year last year and hope they have a good year this year. Who do you suggest i should replace them with. I think buckley is a tad risky so ill prob replace him.

Eraserhead

This is just my 2 cents, but I had a shocker this year and dropped down to a ranking of around 1,300 so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Enright â€" may be worth the risk because of his consistency, but at 28, doesn’t have any upside.  I would not spend that much on a defender, though, unless it’s someone who is still improving.  Or maybe Mackie because he’s a little younger or H Shaw because he doesn’t get tagged any more (too many other dangerous Pies).
Fisher â€" worth the risk and, although 28 too, I reckon there’s a good chance of him improving on this year’s 85.
Hodge â€" probably worth the risk because he’s cheap but don’t expect 22 games.
Ellis â€" too injury prone for me.  I would go for Mundy purely because he hasn’t missed a game in almost 5 years or Birchall who didn’t have a full preseason last year and was never fully fit.
Buckley â€" if he plays Clarke’s old role in the Nab Cup, has potential to score well.  But I’ve read Broadbent is training very well.  He got a lot of the ball as a junior and I reckon he’ll be in Port’s 22 next year.  I also read that Drum has impressed at Geelong so far and the cats seriously need tallish defenders.  I’m getting on the Drum bandwagon this year.  I thought he was pretty good at Freo and don’t understand why he didn’t get more games.
Maguire â€" if no kids present themselves in the Nab Cup and Goose is fit, I think he’s worth the risk if rookie priced.  I think he played most of last year in the VFL and now that the rod has been taken out of his leg, he should be in pretty good nick.

Hayes â€"> Bartell â€" only 26 and reasonably priced for a premium mid. Or Stanton, Lids (if not named a fwd) and J Selwood are all still improving.
Palmer â€" maybe Armitage (especially if he gets a discount) â€" averaged 90 in his 3 games and in his 4th year, with Luke Ball gone, and favorable comments recently by Lyon, should be in their 22.  If not, then Ward â€" should get more tog in an aging Dogs side.

Cox â€" McIntosh is apparently “ripping up the track” and I reckon will become elite next year.
Hille â€" Won’t be ready for round 1 so I don’t think he will get back to full fitness next year, but there’s not much else around that price range.  Charman is supposed to be training well, but I’m not sure how Voss plans to play him, Leuenbergrer and Clarke next year.  I’m taking the safe option next year with rucks and picking Kruezz and H Mac.

Pav â€"> Sylvia.  Has had injury issues in the past but would have played every game for Melbourne this year if not suspended by the club.  I read that he’s finally taking his footy seriously so he’s training hard and living the clean life.
Higgins â€"> LeCras or Rioli â€" both should get rotated through the midfield more next year so should increase their averages.
Walker â€" Probably worth the risk at that price.

One last thing, I know it’s too early to pick bench rookies, but if you do take a few risks with Hille, Walker, Ellis, Buckley, etc, I would make sure you have good rookies on the bench to cover injuries and they may cost a little more than $90k rookies, eg Sheppard, Marabito, etc.

starz

yeh i agree with most of your comments there and i will wait untill the nab cup before i pick my real team. Quick question how many rookies do you think is ideal to start with next year?

Eraserhead

2008 â€" started with about 6 rookies and ranked 800 and something.
2009 â€" only rookies on the ground were Rich and Otten.  Started well and ranked top 500 after round 10 having used only 7 trades but must have traded poorly because I finished 1300 and something (had a shipload of injuries, but everyone did so can't use that as an excuse).

Atm I have 5 rookies on the ground â€" Sheppard, Scully, Martin, Sloane and Trengrove, and of course 8 on the bench, including more expensive rookies like Jetta, Morabito and Cunnington.  Reason for the increase in rookies being that although this year’s was a “shallow” draft, I reckon the first round picks are as good as ever and seem to be more AFL ready (eg > 80kgs, already have big motors and have played SANFL or WAFL footy). Plus, thanks to the demands of Dream Team, I’m following the 2nd and 3rd year rookies more closely, eg Phil Davis, Sloane.

Sorry, started to banter a bit there.

starz

yeh i think i will start 4 rookies this year depending. I just can't seem to find the perfect midfield. wat does yours look like.

Eraserhead

Thought I’d post my whole team coz I could have just said my mids are Ablett, Swan, Bartell, Montagna, Gibbs, Dal Santo, Scully and Trengrove and it would be the best starting midfield in the comp but the rest of my side would suck.  So here it is:

Shaw
Mackie
Mundy
Birchall
Suban
Drum / Ladson / Myers / Broadbent / Kennelly
Shappard
(Goose)
(Davis)

Gibbs
J Selwood
Lids (don’t think he’ll be classified a fwd this year)
Ward
Scully
Martin
(Morabito)
(Jetta)

H Mac
Kruezer
(Trengrove)
(West)

Sylvia
Franklin
Rioli
LeCras
Dangerfield
Sloane
Trengrove
(Cunnington)
(Tapscott)

I know I don’t have much in the way of captaincy material, but I have $80k in the bank (more if I drop drum for 1 of the other options listed) to address that or upgrade Sloane or Sheppard to a safer option.

As you can see, I’ve tried to stick with durable players.  Don’t know if that will end up being a good or bad thing.  I don’t expect to win the car, just want to win my league and rank as high as possible.

Feel free to bag my team- you won’t hurt my feelings.

starz

i dont think shaw is a dt player more sc. wait a year on suban imo. sheppard will be good. selwood good. I like the pick up of ward think he will be good next year coming into his 3rd year, only one worry and that is he doesn't take enough marks. i like the pick up of dangerfield i think he could get more mid time this year and he is in his 3rd year as well.
can't wait for the nab cup.

valkorum

Out of this choice -- Drum / Ladson / Myers / Broadbent / Kennelly

I dont see Drum being a good choice.  I think if he does play he will get a lockdown defensive role.  Why would they want him bringing the ball out of the back 50 when there is Enright/Milburn/Mackie/Kelly all better than him in this department.

Eraserhead

Yeah, not sure about Shaw, but there just aren’t that many defenders still on the improve that aren’t overpriced.  Kennelly is probably a better pick than Drum.  He’s only a little more expensive than a rookie and is in good nick but he gets injured a lot and is pretty old.  Going for Suban because he is in Freo’s best 22 and finished the year off well which is normally a good sign.  Broadbent and Myers are the 2 that could play every game and become reasonable 7th backs.
