Hi Guys, Thought I would continue my Saga of stats and make a discussion about the Lions.

Last night, well, Carlton smashed them, and I picked out a few faults with the Lions.
---------------------------

Brisbane are another team with to many Handballs, I think the Lions have some Really good kickers, and they usually give it to them to kick it into the 50', but they didn't go ahead with that tactic last night.

Strong In Contests, but have poor Efficiency at Set Kicks, leading up to turnovers/clangers.

They don't connect, they have a resonable about of Inside 50's, 39 Last Night, but they can't finish the hard work, with only 69 on there score card. Will give some credit though, as Brown and Fev weren't there.

There is lots of room for Improvement for the Lions, but Finals Contention Is Over.

plus minus 2 power fowards doesn't help

To compete with the Top 4, our gameplan is completely off.

Instead of taking the route back towards goal to setup the forward line, we need to get the ball in quickly on the counter attack. The current strategy will only work against some teams, but the majority of the time it usually backfires.

Vossy needs to make the players back in their ability to run with the ball forwards, instead of personfooting around with it in the back half.

Trouble is coaches are onto this and take steps to negate quick ball movement. Our game (AFL) is becoming more and more defensive orientated. I may be wrong (probably am) but defensive pressure and holding possession is much more important these days.

Kazahkstan

No, I think that's fair to say. Look what the Saints did to the Cats the other week.
But really, it does come down to a mixture of things.

Master Q

You can't win a flag without a FB. That is the No.1 Rule. FB's are the key imo, then the Ruckmen, and then a on-baller.

Kazahkstan

At full strength, I would say Brisbane have one of the best defenses in the league.

bunyip

That's a big statement Kaz. When you say that, are they in the top 3 or 4 or 5? A lot of teams have really mean defences these days.

Adcock Merrett Patfull
Drummond Maguire McGrath

I would take that over St. Kilda's back six anyday. I realise that St. Kilda's structures/gameplans/whatever are a mile better than Brisbane's, but with the right set up I believe they could make Brisbane a Top 4 team.

Master Q

Adcock has lost form and Mcgrath is at maximum a B-.

This is how you set-up, the bold are weak.

Adcock    Merett     McGrath

Maguire   Patfull     Drummond

Drummond is a great attacking defender, but when it comes to actual defending :-\

Which team defence has the best ratio  of inside 50's opposed to  scoring shots. If a team has 60 inside 50's and 25 scoring shots then the defensive team has repelled an attacking move more than 50% of the time.

What team is that?

bunyip

I'm talking about the defense. I haven't looked up any stats but I would like to know who is the best defense in terms of the ratio of scoring shots to inside 50's. Just curious, it's probably St.Kilda has the best return.

bunyip

There's a small piece in todays Sun that describes exactly what I'm talking about.

I'd take Josh Drummond on my side anyday. Well, I'm very happy with Shaw and O'Brien, but Drummond is a great player.
