Dear future Me,

When 2013 rolls around, please do not make the same mistake (again) & remember this one piece of advice:

Do not pick 18 year olds. If you can help it.

Generally speaking - there's always exceptions to the rule (but if you miss an exceptional one, just bring him in before his price hikes) - they are disappointing - all hype, little pay off. I'm looking at you Dev Smith/Dylan Shiel/Stephen Coniglio. None of you have done anywhere near as well as your older counterparts (eg. JMac, Giles, Mohr, even Kennedy who's a year or so older). Tom Bugg - you are excused. I am, of course, also thinking of many Gold Coast Suns players from last year, compared to their older team mates (eg. Danny Stanley).

This advice also goes for who to start on the ground - i.e. you should have started JMac & Magner (who hasn't even been named yet!) instead of Coniglio & Shiel.

Looking forward to seeing how some older recruits like Magner, Pfeiffer, Dickson, Aaron Hall, Spurr, Morris - even Clarke - go next weekend (if selected)... Will they show up the younger boys? It wouldn't surprise me!

Kind Regards (& don't stuff it up again!),

Past You ;)

Haha good post!

Makes you think - Interesting to see next week who plays etc, and whether this rule applies to them too... 18yo bodies tonight couldn't quite stand up to the more mature bodies around the contest.

Disappointed with Shiel/Smith, however stoked with Bugg and Kennedy! Mumford SHOULD have taken advantage of the situation and dominated too - was expecting 120+ which I though was being pretty lenient...

Talisman

Yeah, Buggy & Kennedy were both outstanding! Hopefully they can maintain those high standards for a while yet... And couldn't agree more re. Mummy - very disappointing outing really. Should have dominated, but then again I guess Giles did pretty well against him...

jamesalex

Shiel has burned me this week, will look for improvement over the season though, hopefully...

Adam Kennedy on the bench, and not named emergency  :'(

Giles on the bench, started Jarrard Redden over him  :'(

McDonald on the bench  :'(

Devon Smith on the field  :'(

BlackMamba

Last min switch of Cameron for Kennedy in DT only  :'(.

Giles and Bugg were E for me.

Started McDonald over Shiel so that was ok.

Yes great post. My note will say - just pick someone like Mohr as he's mature age,has better JS than most, don't worry about KPP crap. Instead I left him out in case someone with better scoring ability is named which may happen(Boumann)but what about JS?(Boumann out Gilham in)
And don't pick Goodsey because he has a easy first half of season - that's why you DON'T pick him.Lifts for the big games and finishes strongly.

shiel has almost 0 match fitness and was always going to have been vested- shouldn't have been started.

a 70 from a rookie fwd like smith is really quite solid...

Dear talisman

Dont look so harshly on 18 year olds after one game of football.

Next week they dominate and you post a thread on how good they are

I think that's one of the issues with spending a bit extra on a rookie.  You feel almost compel to start them due to price tag, even though McDonald will probably score higher and costs less.

Gotta admit, I was not expecting this much from Bugg & Kennedy, but very happy so far.

cortez

why are people complaining about not starting players when the player they picked hasnt even pkayed yet. re giles on the bench and redden starting. for all you know redden will come out and score a tonne. so stop complaining :-)

Maca24

No regrets on picking Dev Smith.. Im sure he will score 100 next week.

Yeah a 70 would have been great... But he got 55.

Don't be too hard on yourself ;-), Everyone knows with rookies it's hard to pick who will do well and there's always surprises mate ;-)
