The title is saying, when it comes to ruckman (hence, when up North.......coz ruckman are tall......*fail*), is anyone going to pick West? Why/why not?

Another question for you, if you are going to take the gamble and take a mid priced ruckman, who would it be? Such candidates are Trent West, Zac Smith, Mathew Kreuzer, Angus Graham, Hamish McIntosh or even Ivan Maric.

For me it would be Kreuzer or Smith. You want your ruckmen to be the number 1 ruck at their club. I just found out that Warnock is injured and may not be ready for round one which means Kruezer will be back to the number one ruck role.
Z Smith just needs to perform like he did for first half of last year - all year - for him to be worthwhile selection. However it should be noted that whichever one you choose I think it would be highly likely that you'll need to upgrade them to have a shot at your league prize or a decent ranking because you'll be leaking points to other teams who have say Cox and Sandilands.

I agree with speculator on one thing, the only problem with picking a mid price ruck from the list you have is that none, except maybe Kruzer is likely to be a keeper in a top end team.
However if your plan is to use say Smith for the first 12rnds then upgrade to your premium and more importantly form player then I think that has merrit. Smith's first 12rnds will more than likely be his best, so a quick $100k or so cash grab while not losing too much money could set you up to pick the form ruckmen of the comp for the second half, which is often more important than picking one of the tried and true premiums.

Another to consider is Renouf. A lot cheaper than the others and lobbe is out of action for a while. Could b a great cash cow

As is this. i think i might, depending on a players fixture, do that.
