I've had a big think about the way that I am going to structure my team and I've gone with the 15 established player, 15 rookie structure.
I am also taking the byes into consideration and ensuring that I only have a maximum of 2 established players per position per bye round.
I'll explain my jargon with a definition each time I use it.

ESTABLISHED PLAYER: A player who has played for one season or more and has shown the ability to score highly and is not at a rookie price.

BACKS/FWDS: I can go with either 5 established players down back with 4 forward or the other way around. I'm thinking the 5 down back and 4 up forward is the best option. In my backline I am going with 3 guns, 1 bullet and 1 bargain and 4 rookies. Up forward, 2 guns, 1 bullet, 1 bargain, 5 rookies.

GUN: An established player who was outstanding last season recording a high average for the position they play. (Ablett, Franklin)

BULLET: An established player who has had a high scoring average last season but has the potential to his increase his scoring by +5 or more this season. (J Selwood, D Martin)

BARGAIN: An established player who's price does not reflect his scoring ability. Player has to have shown that they have scored highly in past season/s. (Lake, J Brown)

MIDS: 2 guns, 1 bullet, 1 bargain, 4 rookies

RUCKS: 1 gun, 1 bullet, 2 rookies

So in summary I am looking to setup my team as follows taking byes into consideration:

BACKS: 3 guns, 1 bullet, 1 bargain, 4 rookies

MIDS: 2 guns, 1 bullet, 1 bargain, 4 rookies

RUCKS: 1 gun, 1 bullet 2 rookies

FWDS: 2 guns, 1 bullet, 1 bargain, 5 rookies

I am also leaving myself with $70,000+ in case anything out of the ordinary happens as I have been burnt in previous seasons with having a lack of cash to start off with.

What do you all think of this structure?

Ringo

I think structure you propose is reasonable.  However I think you need an extra gun or Bullet in your forward line.  Playing 3 rookies in your forward line week in week out may be very risky.

Also IMO if you try setting a team up from Round 1 to cover byes you may be loosing points.

My strategy this year after being given some good advice is to work out what your final team of premiums will look like, then get as many of those players into team from outset regardless of byes and supplement with rookies. Obviously any trading involving an upgrade will be to help reach your final team.  Bear in mind we have 3 trades during bye rounds as well.

Very much agree with Ringo, whatever strategy you follow cannot sacrifice points scored. Reckon the way to go is to pick the very best team possible, no restrictions in any way and that becomes your target for the season. Any strategy you use ultimately aims at finishing with that team before seasons end. Any cashcowing or upgrading can take the byes in account, but realistically speaking just about everybody is gonna be stuffed by the byes one way or another. Hope this helps in some wat. Cheers.

90% agree with Ringo and Sabretooth Tigers also, 90% because you have to accept you could bring the premiums you dont pick from the start in as upgrades after the byes, there are parts of your final team you will be ugrading too right.

And if the team you start with costs you donuts, then to make sense they also have to have scored you more points through 10 rounds than what they will lose you in donuts through 3 bye rounds.

Its not easy no matter how you look at it is a lose lose situation and VS had no right doing our deahs in SO badly with the set up just imagine the poor guy that logs onto DT or SC a few days before the season starts, to start his team for the year. he is going freak out.

But that said i still agree with your comments on the right players regardless of the byes , just need to also minimise donuts where possible and make sure they will earn more over 10 rounds than they will cost you over 3 :)
