I tried that in 2011. I only had 3 premium backs and filled the rest with rookies like Duigan. I stacked my midfield. It didn't work very well at all.

Depends how you use the money!!!

Lower, Heppel, and Stanley pretty much could have kept most of the season.  Then there was Martin & Suckling if you go lucky.

I had Lower, Stanley and Suckling, and it still didn't work. Maybe it did work, and the rest of my team sucked.

I agree with your theory. That's why I tried it.

I think there would have been a number of approaches that would have given you extra ground in r1, but I guess a lot depends on how well you spend those funds freed up.

Here are a few off the top of my head

- Starting McEvoy & Goldstein over Sandilands - who knows next year it could be big Will's time to shine!   Maybe Trent West will have a massive year.
- Going light in the back, and picking the right rookies - maybe next year the rookies in the forward line could be better who knows...
- Not starting anyone from St Kilda (Goddard, Nroo, Gilbert, Montagna)
- Stuff like that.

I guess my point is, don't get too married to any ideas, have an open mind but also back your own instincts.
