Ok ... so I won my league ... this is great in terms of bragging rights!
Finished around 9000 overall which is like the top 3% so that is also pretty good.

Trying to work out the difference between being in the top 3% and the top 1%?
My side was pretty spot on .. i traded well ... finished with 2 trades left for the grand final.
Picked the best rookies early ... perhaps the difference is just luck?

it does come down to luck, but sometimes you just have to trade hard early, and risk it ?
i started the year ranked around top 20,000 after round 3 , traded hard, and finished Overall Rank 6,366

only had 1 trade between round 14 and round 22, then no trades the final 2 weeks

and somehow i went up in the rankings the last two weeks by a few hundred positions .

This was my third year and i have improved every year. Finished 1238 this year. I think experience has definitely helped. But yeah you also need a bit of luck along the way.

A bit of luck and trading hard and early always help :) But it's that line of aggressively trading and conserving trades that is the key to success

Picking awesome players helps too haha

trading hard but not stupid is the key to overall sucess. If you do that top 5k shouldnt be too dificult. I normally use most of my trades up by around round 14ish and i make my ground typically in round 12-20 than try and hold on in the last 4 rounds. If you want to win both your league and have a high ranking than it comes down to luck but if you focus on ranking ints not too hard to do well. For example i have never had 2 trades for the gf i had only 1 trade the whole final series.

I think going to unique sometimes bites u on the ass. I picked up 2 uniques this year, i got Redden in round 4 that was a great get and i picked up Scully mid season which really flowered me, it cost me 2 trades to get him in then out because he's a crab. Ended up finishing 5000ish so pretty happy with that! Bring on 2012!

I finished 1911 overall so I'm no expert but the key is identifying the rookies with good job security and an ability to pull 70+ scores regularly

I missed Curnow early and I.Smith later so I was trying to plug my holes with Atley and Dixon etc.   Doesn't set you up for a big score.

In the end their is a fair element of luck in it all though.  The best way to cope with bad luck (e.g. losing Pav, Fyfe, Buddy, Hodge etc) is trades.  This year I actually went into the finals with 5 - probably could have used 1 more for the GF.

I finished 508th overall this year. I've played for 5 years now. This year I double traded 11 weeks in a row from round 7-17 and iLeft one trade left for rd 24 to trade of Ryder. The double trades was really aggressive but gave me a much better teams a few weeks before everyone else. The key to doing well overall is not to save trades for finals basically. Trade hard and some luck and you will improve. Also, my first trade was in roud 6. I didn't unlike others trade out and in players who seemed to be in r out of form. Be patient with the players you first chose, particularly web you have done te research!

I took the same approach, third year best ranking of 690, I had an aggressive trade strategy and finished trading in rd17 with good cover I didn't need finals trades, had my share of lti s key is to not trade out Higgins type players unless they are total duds, I wasted alot of trades and cashed a few cows way early but gained points doing so, peaked at 340th
