Rookie/Cheapie MID & GUN BCK/FWD/RK Theory for Leagues

Just wondering what people's thoughts are on having a MID made up of all rookies/cheapies that will play and be cash cows and then having the BCK/RCK/FWD full of Guns.

The premise behind this is that throughout the year (particularly around trading period of Rounds 6-8) during cashing our cows - normally the downgrade options at that time are for rookies pre-dominantly in the midfield. Furthermore, we know how much trouble we have had with mediocre Backs & Forwards - so why not start with mostly the best.

My personal opinion is that this theory would work well for a league structure because by the end of the year you should have a gun team (you just have to hope you win enough games during the season to make the finals).

Here's an example of a team:

B: Bowden, Goddard, Lockyer, Bock, Cornes, Houlihan, Raines (Hill, Petrenko)

M: Haselby, Rich, H Hartlett, L Anthony, M Robinson, T Swift, (A Otten, Dangerfield)

R: Cox, Jolly (Jesse White, Currie)

F: Harvey, Riewoldt, Deledio, Pavlich, Richardson, Sidebottom (Ziebell, Yarran)

This team leaves $140K in the bank to enable some immediate upgrades in the Mids when players like the Geelong ABC drop in value.

Thoughts???

No way dude... terrible idea. Hartlett, Anthony and Swift will not start the year so you have 3 not playing from the start. Sidebottom will also not play round 1. And Robinson is no certainty to play.

Uncle, I am thinking he knows that, and he's not speaking about from winning the whole competition point of view. Just saying that by having a whole load of cashcows in mids (where they normally get most games and points) allows for a lot of upgrades. I think its a perfectly valid strategy if you just want to win your league, provided you think you can still make the finals (Also it relies a bit on not too many of your stars getting injured during the year)

Basically, if you want a car (or even a high ranking) its no good, otherwise interesting idea.

Its an interesting idea...but one i personally wouldnt do.

But a mate of mine who had 2 teams did a similar thing with 1 of his teams last year. His theory of it was to win a weekly prize ($1,000) by having plenty of rookies starting with a few guns and plenty of money in the bank. He slowly built his team into a star studded lineup and by the last few rounds he actually got quite close to winning a weekly prize.

if this isnt your intention then i wouldnt go through with the team...but who knows??? give it a try and it might pay dividends

Thanks for the feedback guys.

YES - the Team was just an example to illustrate the strategy - not the actual team i'd/you'd put in.

Cheers.

I like the concept.
It's risk v reward.
Unfortunately, this side has a little too much risk with rookies in the midfield.

Sticking to the same theory, why not try a side like this:

B: Bowden, Goddard, Bock, Cornes, Lockyer, Raines, Hill ( Suban, Broughton )
M: Kornes, Swallow, Higgins, Skipworth, Ward, Rich ( Dangerfield, Swift )
R: Cox, McIntosh ( Currie, Pyke )
F : Reiwoldt, Delidio, Harvey, Pavlich, Richo, J.Brown, Zeibell ( Gumby, Grant )

At least with guys like Swallow, Higgins, Skipworth and Ward, its more likely for them to get games rather than the rookies you had listed.
The stucture hasn't really changed, just saved some money where I could.
And put in Kornes, represents safe captain material.

I haven't checked this against the cap properly, maybe a few of the premiums could be tweaked to suit.

I wouldn't go for this side either but that how I'd look at it if I was to spend little in my midfield and load up elsewhere.
I think if you were looking to spend little in one area and load up elsewhere it would be the foward line.
Seems to be plenty of options available between $86-$250k.
