We need to change the gameplan. None of those short chips helped us at all and they scored more than half their goals from kicking over our zone where they had a forward on his own.

Need to change senior coaches IMO.
I'm not a Hawthon supporter but seriously, how does one coach through a game with no headset and no phone and completely secluded from the rest of the coaching staff.
Who does that?

Game day wise there is very little a senior coach does minute for minute. Things are so quick and micromanaged that assistant coaches and other staff have to be empowered to make decisions.

In fact it is quite a common practise for a coach to tell the players that they are "coaching" for the day. Other than health staff and monitoring rotations, players control the strategic side themselves. In fact I think Carlton did it for half a season once....

Anyway, apart from the obvious skill errors, what we did wrong...

At contested situations and stoppages, the default tactic appears to be hit it forward. However, every time there were 3 crows waiting for it and had the numbers to carry the ball forward easily. We also need the spread from these situations much quicker - this is especially important given we are a slower side.

I also think we are playing the press too tightly and too ridgedly. There were many occasions where one or two crows forwards were behind our press and the ball simply had to be kicked over the top quickly to get past it. The amount of uncontested inside 50s was horrible. Again, given our lack of speed, we need to be smart in there situations and drop one or two defenders back off the press to account for these players.

The tight press also made moving the ball forward difficult. We would often move it quickly out of defence and get to the wing and have no options. No options means we can't deliver the ball cleanly to what is a stacked forward line.

What we did right. Our movement of the ball out of defence in the first half was amazing.

Players...

Clinton Young looks fit again!! Savage and Shiels were great. Suckling had some good moments... still needs a bit more defensive nous though. Ladson has clearly found some form again. I thought it was Gibson's best match for us yet.

Lewis was playing a defensive role.... although he did his job he is a loss to the midfield. When he plays defensively up forward he tends to still contribute with goals. Not so when on ball. Unless he can offensively hurt the opposition as well defensively then the role is not for him.

Burgoyne had a great first half but went missing in the second. Bruce was shaky at best. Although Osbourne kicked 3, he didn't perform that well. Birchall should be amongst it a lot more as well.

Lastly.... I love Stratton. There, I said it. He is brilliant.
