I was talking to a friend who's a huge geelong supporter... he reckons that ling is going to retire either end of this year, or next, and that selwood will be the next captain for sure.

Have to say, he could be dead right.

Well, the only reason I could see to not captain him, would be worry that the pressure would adversely affect his game and subsequently his development as a player (considering his still relative young age).

Shouldn't captaincy be allocated based on how well someone understands the game, and so how well they can teach and guide younger players, rather than just how skilful a player is?

I mean, just a thought :P

Just ftr, how is captaincy awarded? I just did a little google search on it, didn't really find the answer, but found out something interesting... apparently in like the 20s and 40s richmond's captain was also their coach. Would the captain be recieving his salary as a player and as a coach, and if so, and if that happened today, would the coaches salary count toward the salary cap?

I'm not sure he should be captain just yet... Kinda unfortunate that Ling is retiring so early in Selwood's career. But who would be captain next, if not him?

I'm not sure, I don't really have that type of information on Geelongs side. Myself, I'd pick someone who was good, but also had enough age + experience on hand, preferably with leadership qualities. What about Chapman if he keeps playing + fits the characteristic criteria? If he can stay on for another couple of years, it'll give selwood a chance to develop + mature a bit more, then when chappy retires he could take over the mantle?

Bartell for captain,,,,Selwood is a great footballer but not a rhodes scholar it seems...so might be exactly the right kind to have as Vcaptain....
