Summary:

A key member of St. Kilda's impressive line-up, James Gwilt had a very consistent year last year however averaged only 75. Not hard to miss on the footy field, Gwilt played his first full-season of his career (his next best 15 games in 2009), and his fantasy scores have been consistently improving. At 24, he has a promising career ahead of him.

An interesting stat, in the 9 matches St. Kilda played against other top 8 sides (yes, they only played 9/22!) Gwilt Averaged 81.44 and all 3 of his centuries came against big sides (Collingwood, Geelong, Fremantle). And in his 13 matches against bottom 8 sides, he averaged 69.21.

For completion, in Gwilt's four finals he scored:

Grand Final Replay v Collingwood: 97
Grand Final v Collingwood: 97
Prelim v Bulldogs: 93
QF v Geelong: 95

So, a very good finals series! To me, this is a sign of player on the improve.

The Crystal Ball:

Based on last year's magic number
Price: $396,200

Based on m0nty's fanplanner
Price: $377,200

Position: DEF/FWD or DEF

I've always seen Gwilt as a defender, so it would not surprise me if he lost his MPP status this year. I would think Gwilt will improve on 2010, as he continues to influence games. In fact, I might tip him for All-Australian, but that doesn't necessarily mean he'll be a good fantasy option.

Decision:

I'd like to pick him. I think he is underpriced. I just think his price is awkward, and better value can be found elsewhere. I'll give him a 'touch and go' on the basis he keeps his MPP. If he doesn't, he becomes unlikely.

Had him this year & the MPP helped me a lot. If MPP can stake a claim

Unlikely for me, as you say Ossie his price is too awkward. Even with MPP, he's still unlikely, I think there are better options for the FWD/DEF MPP role like Hurley etc.

pyronerd

despite me thinking he will improve this year, and that he was one of the 4 or so saints players who played a decent grand final replay  ::) the price is awkward so its an unlikely

Maca24

james gwit is a gun and is on the rise. played 2 great grand finals.
however i dont think he will make my team.

Junktimer

unlikely for me, has improved a lot, and those final scores are impressive. but he is at an awkward price.

I think he'll improve heaps, but I can't fit him in alongside Riewoldt and Goddard
