We all know the AFL Draw isn't fair. So this is what the ladder would look like when taking into account only the most recent home and away game (including finals) against each team.

Some oddities - for instance Essendon have not played a home game against Sydney since 2006 and against the Kangaroos since 2005. Also, Port Adelaide have not had a home game against the Dogs since 2006. So it is a little bit misleading, but probably a fair ranking of teams

Rank   Team   Wins   Draws   Loses   %
1   Collingwood   26   1   3   156.70%
2   St. Kilda   23   1   6   126.49%
3   Geelong   23   0   7   138.05%
4   Western Bulldogs   18   0   12   119.57%
5   Hawthorn   17   1   12   108.40%
6   Sydney   17   0   13   107.76%
7   Adelaide   16   0   14   108.38%
8   Fremantle   15   0   15   94.87%
9   Carlton   13   0   17   102.39%
10   North Melbourne   13   0   17   86.55%
11   Brisbane   12   0   18   89.02%
12   Port Adelaide   12   0   18   80.77%
13   Essendon   10   0   20   82.77%
14   Melbourne   9   1   20   89.41%
15   West Coast   7   0   23   78.70%
16   Richmond   7   0   23   71.24%

Good to see the Tigers back on the bottom :P Seems reasonable though.

Good to also see carlton miss the eight... ;)

I did find it strange Carlton missed the 8 despite making the 8 the last two years.

Not rigged! I swear...

Carlton lost to Adelaide, Collingwood, Essendon, Fremantle, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, St. Kilda, Sydney and the Bulldogs for their last 'Home' games.

Carlton lost to Adelaide, Brisbane, Collingwood, Fremantle, Geelong, Hawthorn, North Melbourne and Sydney in their last 'away' games.

That's 17 losses

Its a good discussion Ossie, you should work for the ABS.

If it includes finals, wouldn't Collingwood have two draws?

Also to explain Carlton in 2010 alone they finished 11 wins and 11 losses then (inevitably) lost their final which takes them to 11:12. That would usually exclude from the top 8!

How far back do your stats go?

hawk_88

Strictly speaking the GF is not a home match for either team so hard to use for this statistical purpose.

Indeed hawka. To avoid confusion, have simply taken the first team named as the 'home' team. Generally the team that qualifies first for the grand final is named first. Been occasions (i.e. Melbourne v Brisbane at the Gabba) where the home team should be the away team, but its there choice, so it counts as home.

I should be working at the ABS for sure.

And it does include finals, but the drawn grand final was immediately written over the grand final the week after.

Hwak_88, homes games are irrelevant, its home & away & finals.

#7
They are very relevant, in fact they are the point entirely.

This is a ranking of teams combining their last home and away match against each team. 30 matches for each team. The purpose is to analyse the form of teams in an "even" draw as opposed to the current fixture.

ossie has included finals which all have a home and an away team (apart from the GF) so they are relevant data. Even if you take the GF out of it, the end result is very similar. The only change would be the percentage as Collingwood beat the Saints in their last home and away match anyway.

Edit: Typo

Hawk-88 again I must politely correct you.

Collingwood did not beat the Pies in round 22. Surely you of all people must remember that!

Good to see adelaide back in the 8 :)
