Now we're getting to the pointy end of the season with finals on the horizon, what were your takeaways from this season?

I'll kick us off with a few of my own:

  • There is no such think as hedging your bets with midpricers!!!! -- Don't start a bunch of midpricers with the expectation that at least a couple of them will pop.  Started Lonergan, Sheridan, B. Crouch, Caleb Daniel, Hall (arguably a good pick even though he's fallen off)
  • There era of dominant SC ruckman is over.  It's an open playing field.  Gawn is probably at the top.  Goldy has fallen from ultra premo.  Stef was up and down.  Grundy showed some late.
  • Dochers is your new ultra prem def.  Will people fork out?
  • R/F R3.  R/F R3.  R/F R3
  • Rocky is a glass cannon but a bloody good one.

Good topic.

I'm going to think about this more in the off season however..
This year I started S.Gray, Hall, Lonergan, Libba all as mid pricers/low end premos.
Hall - I'm counting as a win, especially after his start in which after 3-4 weeks everyone jumped on so I already had that points advantage.
Libba- guy was averaging 100 till his bye until I culled him for Jelwood. He did his job.
Lonergan and S.Gray were fails.
However, there is Doc, Zerrett that were around the same prices $400-470k that have turned out to be great picks
Lesson? I'll be selecting low end premos and mid pricers again, just need to select the right ones!

Start with two/three of the ultra premos in each line.
This year I took a risk not starting Shaw, Pendles, Dusty, Dahl, Hanners. Currently ranked just outside the top 1k but I was as low as 20k after Rd 6/7. Too far behind points wise.

Keep being aggressive with trades.
I chopped Rocky and Barlow after rd2 which were both good calls.
Chopped rookies early to get good rookies in to generate more cash. This worked well.

Start with a ruckman/forward swingman.
I don't have ruck cover at the moment, might not need it but gee it's making me nervous!

Hmmm. Not sure I will pay top $ again (started with Goldy, Stef & Heater) but it is hard to say because I knew they were overs but you intend to save those trades. Danger for instance, it will be hard not to start with him in 2017 regardless of starting price. As both of you have mentioned I will def have my R3 as a DPP even if he never plays a game. Anyway Good Luck in the finals!

JPK is one to get after the byes. He's done it again.
Freo players should come with a buyer beware warning due to the Ross Lyon factor.
Rocky is worth the extra couple of trades he causes.
Top dollar premos are worth the extra coin when setting up teams... Remember the Heater/ Goldy threads pre season..next year- Danger.

Dochers will never leave my team again.

Locked him at the start of 2015 and been with me all the way, and he ain't leaving.

MIDS - load up on them early

Go weaker in DEF/FWD until the contenders start to emerge. Too hard to pick them pre-season

Goldy has only been down because he's been playing injured for a lot of the season. Still a very solid scorer and will be a lock again next year for me.

My only real lesson would be one I should have known by now but needs to be drummed in again.. Don't stuff around with mid pricers unless they are a premo returning from injury. Same goes for "almost premos" that you think can go to the next level.
Went against that and started Rich and Trent Mackenzie down back, Crouch in the middle and Berger forward. All Mid pricers that have never been premos that all failed. The 2 that were successful were Libba and Wells.. Proper premos that were discounted from injury
