Currently doing the same. I've switched Gray to M4 and brought Bartel into F1. When forward rooks ripen I'll flick Gray to forwards and grab a premo mid. Well, that's the plan anyway  :-\

Starting with R gray could be good as it gives you more room to choose the inform midfielders when trading instead of starting with 5 premo keepers and hoping they are all top 10 or top 8 mids. so by having gray in mids, you can swithc he to FWD later on and upgrade a midfielder of your choice.

Currently have lids, bennel, and swan as keepers for fwd line because of the amount of fwd rookies.

So what are your thoughts i think it is a smart option which will give you more room to choose the right premo for your team come upgrading time.
But then you have less room to pick the right forwards haha. It's a two-way street :P

highly doubt gray wont be in top fwd

But someone like Lids or Bennell might not be. Just making a point that if you go with an extra fwd, you get more time to look at mids, less at fwds. Get an extra mid, more time to look at fwds, less at mids. Not arguing that Gray isn't a good pick, just the strategy behind your logic is a bit flawed.

however i believe that the best premos and average premos in the mids are separated by more points rather then the best fwds and the average fwds. thats just my point of view

Well, you could have cases that can support your argument either way. And depends what you classify as avg.

Gray + Steven vs Pendles + Walters, Gray/Steven would probably win
Gray + Mundy vs Pendles + GUNston, Pendles/GUNston probably win

All comes down to each specific player
