HERITIER Lumumba is likely to play in a variety of roles at Melbourne including through the midfield, Demons coach Paul Roos says.

Lumumba, who crossed from Collingwood at the end of last season and was this week added to Melbourne's leadership group, made a name for himself as a running defender in his days as a Magpie.

He also spent time on the wing during his 199 games at the Pies, and looks likely to add more midfield time to his repertoire in his first year as a Demon.

"I think [he'll play] a combination of both [in the backline and the middle]," Roos said, as part of AFL Media's #AskTheCoach series.

"He has been working with the midfield group and the defensive group.

"Certainly his size around the stoppages is a big advantage, but also his run off half-back is something that we will look forward to him adding to our football club."

Lumumba has just started to creep into my sides this week and if he does start to play a bit of midfield then he'll pop up in a lot of sides. The Melb boys have been posting updates of the Demon's training and Lumumba features regularly in talk of midfield work.

hmm yeah been seeing a lot of these reports on him.
It is very tempting to pick him up,he is so cheap.

in fairness, it's preseason

basically everyone is 'training with the midfield group'
I'm waiting for NAB, but he's one of the options I'm considering as D3 (along with Hurn)

Not everyone. And not everyone is shining in stoppage work or getting pumped up by the coach as a midfield option.  Plus this is one of the first years where we don't have real life mid/defenders. In fact Lumumba is one of few defenders that is actually being reported on as training in the midfield.

For more info have a read of the Melb board

This is pretty encouraging. People were telling me I was crazy when I initially picked him, but it's clearly starting to look like a smart move.  8)
