Title: WXV Round 17: Epic Rhythm Cup, Asian Cup, Finals, Minor Prem, Spoon, Top 4......
Post by: ossie85 on July 27, 2014, 06:57:39 AM
Biggest round ever?

Quite possible!

NO RESTING. LAST CHANCE FOR FLOODING AND ATTACKING.

Partial Lockout for the Thursday Night game, full lock out Friday night.

Round 17      AFL Round 19 (partial lock-out)

Mexico City Suns   v   Cairo Sands   Fireball Stadium   AAP Alliance Premiership Match
Seoul Magpies   v   Tokyo Samurai   Seoul World Cup Stadium   Asian Premiership Match & Asian Cup
Wellington Warriors   v   New Delhi Tigers   The Basin Reserve
Pacific Islanders   v   Dublin Destroyers   Oakley Arena, Tonga
Cape Town Cobras   v   PNL Reindeers   Newlands Cricket Ground
London Royals   v   Beijing Thunder   London Olympic Stadium   EurAsian Premiership Match
Toronto Wolves   v   New York Revolution   Rogers Centre   Americas Premiership Match
Sao Paulo Pumas   v   Buenos Aires Armadillos   Estadio do Pumas   Americas Premiership Match & Rhythm (South American Cup)
Moscow Spetsnaz   v   Berlin Brewers   Luzhniki Stadium   European Premiership Match

Mexico City Suns face off against the Cairo Sands. The Suns want a minor premiership, but more importantly, they don't want to face in Dublin in the first week of the finals. Meanwhile Cairo's top 8 chances rely on a win here and either Cape Town or Toronto losing

Seoul faces Tokyo in the Asian Cup, with Seoul holding a 2-0 lead. Playing for pride, and this cup, but unless Seoul beat Tokyo by 90 points, the Samurai will take home the Asian Premiership.

Wellington face off against the New Delhi, and will start strong favourites. The Tigers would love to get a 5th win, as that would should improvement on last year. The Warriors want to avoid a 2nd spoon in a row, and a win would guarantee it.

Pacific aren't going to win against a Dublin team whose eyes are on a different prize.

Cape Town can lose, and still make the finals, but would be relying on both Berlin and Cairo losing. Meanwhile PNL need this win, and hope Buenos Aires to beat Sao Paulo, to make the top 4.

London will be looking to finish the season on a high, while Beijing don't want to win the spoon.

New York and Toronto face off, and while New York are playing for pride and to keep out of the bottom 4, Toronto risk falling out of the 8 if they lose (and 2 of Cape Town, Cairo and Berlin win).

In the match of the Round, we have the 5th Rhythm Cup! With Sao Paulo leading Buenos Aires 4-0, but they've had so many epic encounters - including last year's after the siren Prelim Final. Buenos Aires have top 2 and minor premiership hopes on the line, a loss would likely see the Pumas miss the 4. Expecting some fireworks!

Berlin's finals hope hinge on beating Moscow, and hoping two of Cairo, Cape Town and Toronto lose. Moscow will finish either 5th or 6th.

Ladder:

Position   Name   Score   Scored Against   Wins   Losses   Percentage
1   Mexico City Suns   2430   2123   14   2   114.46

Technically the Suns can lose and stay 1st, or win and drop to 2nd! Such is the closeness of percentage.
In all likelihood, a loss to Cairo would see them at least drop to 2nd as Dublin will almost certainly beat Pacific. A win would secure top 2, and it would depend on the result of Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo.

2   Buenos Aires Armadillos   2355   2061   14   2   114.26

Buenos Aires could lose and regain 1st spot! But like Mexico City, Dublin would almost certainly takes it place if so. A win against Sao Paulo and it will come down to percentage with Mexico City v Cairo.

3   Dublin Destroyers   2488   2175   13   3   114.39

Can't finish lower than 3rd, and will finish top 2 if they beat Pacific (which is gonna happen), and if either Mexico City or Buenos Aires lose. They'll finish first if both happens.

4   Sao Paulo Pumas   2402   2157   11   5   111.36

Can't finish higher than 4th, and need a win against Buenos Aires to secure it. A loss, and they need to rely PNL losing to Cape Town to stay in the top 4.

5   Paris Nice Lyon Reindeers   2271   2211   11   5   102.71

Can finish as high as 4th or as low as 6th, which is great for PNL really! A win would secure 5th at least, and 4th if the Pumas lose to the Armadillos. A loss and they could slip to 6th if Moscow beat Berlin.

6   Moscow Spetsnaz   2252   2108   10   6   106.83

Can finish as high as 5th if they win PNL lose to Cape Town, and can't finish lower than 6th. Home elimination final secure.

7   Toronto Wolves   2181   2171   9   7   100.46

Can't finish higher than 7th, but could amazingly slip to 10th if all of Cape Town, Cairo and Berlin win and they lose to New York.

8   Cape Town Cobras   2154   2157   9   7   99.86

A win secures a finals place that looked unlikely 2 weeks ago. Can finish as high as 7th if they win and Toronto loses. Could finish as low as 10th with a loss if Cairo or Berlin win.

9   Cairo Sands   2303   2179   8   8   105.69

Cairo's destiny is in the hands of others. One thing for sure is that they need to beat Mexico City to make the finals, and hope that either Toronto or Cape Town lose. Can finish as high as 7th and as low as 10th.

10   Berlin Brewers   2171   2157   8   8   100.65

Berlin's finals chances are the most remote. With Berlin first needing to beat Moscow, and hoping that 2 of Cairo, Cape Town and Toronto lose. Could theoretically finish as high as 7th, but no lower than 10th.

11   London Royals   2043   2133   7   9   95.78

London's finals hopes are lose, and can't finish higher than 11th. A loss to Beijing and they will drop to 12th with Seoul and Tokyo playing each other (assuming they don't draw).

12   Seoul Magpies   2154   2204   6   10   97.73

Can finish has high as 11th if Beijing beat London and they beat Tokyo, or 13th if they lose to Tokyo.

13   Tokyo Samurai   2163   2248   6   10   96.22

Can finish has high as 11th if Beijing beat London and they beat Seoul, or 13th if they lose to Seoul.

14   New York Revolution   2025   2162   5   11   93.66

Can't finish higher than 14th, but could slip to 15th if they lose to Toronto and New Delhi defeat Wellington.

15   New Delhi Tigers   1838   2212   4   12   83.09

New Delhi can finish as high as 14th if they beat Wellington and New York lose to Toronto. Amazingly could still win the spoon, if they lose and Pacific and Beijing win.

16   Wellington Warriors   1979   2207   3   13   89.67

Will finish 15th if they defeat New Delhi (unless Pacific or Beijing thrash their opponents), and could finish last if they lose to New Delhi and if Pacific and Beijing win or gain enough percentage on them.

17   Pacific Islanders   1933   2200   3   13   87.86

Will finish 16th if Pacific upset Dublin, assuming Beijing don't also win and gain percentage on them. Could finish last with a loss to Dublin, regardless of how Beijing go, depending on percentages.

18   Beijing Thunder   1918   2195   3   13   87.38

Could finish as high as 16th with a win (or even a loss depending on other results!), a loss and they could still avoid the wooden spoon with Dublin likely to smash the Pacific.

Wowee. Huge round! Amazing how the 8 still isn't set.

I'm going to pray so hard that we beat Mexico, I don't want to have to rely on other results going our way if we lose.  :(

Surprised Pumas Vs Dillos is the match of the round, when the Dillos are unable to even beat the Pumas when given the chance in the past :P.

Well, the odds are pretty stacked against us...

We've shown we can score well, we just need everybody to turn up to play and pump out a great team score.

5th on points but sitting in 9th due to our inconsistent scoring.

Might cry if we don't make finals.  :P

Clearly my boys were taking it easy against London in the build up for the Rhythm Cup! But even so everyone has been put on notice, and no one in the team is safe after only 3 tonned up last week (well those 3 are safe)...

Love it how everyone always seems to feel sorry for me and offer me players!

I'll gladly accept them Holz, but you seem to be forgetting that the Dillos choke every time they play the Pumas. Couldn't even beat me when I had 3 OOP players last year!

Bit late, but anybody think it's a bit suspicious that my last 5 scores of last round were 61, 65, 50, 29 and 29?

I might get Scooby and the gang onto this, something's fishy.

Plenty of changes after last weeks debacle, and we are expecting a far greater performance this week in the Rhythm Cup. McMahon, Polec, Wright and Martin all dropped after being deemed the worst performers last week, and are replaced by White, Hill, Stringer and Masten. Hoping to make it 5-0 against the Dillo's :)

Good to be able to field a full team this week (hoping Grundy is named...) But it beats the 14 we had last week at any rate 8) Have decided to go with our first Co-C's of the season with the in-form Harry Taylor and Liam Shiels being promoted in place of Wines who historically has struggled against the Swans. Hoping we can put up a good fight to finish the season!

Probably would've beaten the Pumas last week if you had either playing! Harsh!

Naming it now to lock in Carrots and Rowe as I might be out at the bounce when Freo/Blues players are locked.

Will edit once teams are named (mainly worried about Knights, Dwyer who may not be named).

Hate to do this Nige, but the editing stamp was AFTER lockout. I can't except Carrazzo, Rowe or the sub rule in your team. Need to name a new team without any Carlton and Freo players. Carrazzo sucks, but Rowe evens it out :(

Just remember the FF clock is out if it has not been changed by Nigey to reflect real time. current real time is 10.51 but FF clock shows shows 11.02 so 11 minutes out.  Has been that way all season but i have been too lazy to correct.

If Ossie has adjusted his clock he gets the right time. It doesn't matter what other users have their clocks at all times are based on YOUR settings.

Regardless Nigey was like an hour late with his editing and not a clock issue. It's sad for Nige but I don't think he was aware of the rule? #lazynige

To be honest I wouldn't care if ossie let him slide but "rules is rules"

About 11 mins off for me also, but Nige's stamp is over an hour late

BIG match this - imagine if letting this through caused the Suns to miss the Minor Premiership, or Toronto, Cape Town or Berlin to miss the finals? Gotta be strict :(

You can adjust it to be the correct time. If you change it so it says -0.22 then it gets the time as close as you can get it to the proper time. (Off by about a minute)

Sorry, they were locked in before the game. The recent edit was to put McGovern at F4 for Knights.

I posted the full team at the time of the actual post in the threadand made the McGovern edit during the game.

flower it, I don't care anyway. We were never gonna win and those left aren't good scorers, so really the only good to come of this is for Mexico who will get a percentage boost and maybe for Berlin if they win.

Bontempelli has averaged 99 in his last 6 games
Hurley is averaging 77

Cunningham is averaging 57, or Martin is averaging 38
Thomas is averaging 69
Grigg is averaging 51

You are omitting 114 points in average, by not selecting Bontempelli, Howe and Hurley and selecting Martin, Grigg and Thomas.

I just got a little confused when you didn't loophole Bontempelli against me last week, hence why I'm paying attention now. What's going on?

That is a tad suss.

Hurley's often been an emg for them this year, but the recent form of Howe and Bontempelli who have both been in their team and doing well in recent weeks has me baffled as to how they're not in the team for what is a rather important game.

Shaw could have been better but returning from injury so I'll let him off.

Hi Pot, as others have said, named Foley twice. Mzungu was locked in on the interchange but isn't named here, so your interchance will be Mzungu and Ellis.

Ruck: B Longer

I do have to wonder.

Jeremy Howe is averaging 83, 91 in his last 5 games
Bontempelli has averaged 99 in his last 6 games
Hurley is averaging 77

Cunningham is averaging 57, or Martin is averaging 38
Thomas is averaging 69
Grigg is averaging 51

You are omitting 114 points in average, by not selecting Bontempelli, Howe and Hurley and selecting Martin, Grigg and Thomas.

I just got a little confused when you didn't loophole Bontempelli against me last week, hence why I'm paying attention now. What's going on?

Remarkably not bad with Dunstan's 72 the lowest score. I still don't think we're going to get close.

I'm always off with my calculations but this is a solid enough rough estimate hopefully

Toronto - 844/10

NYR - 882/11 (one CC)

Now again, that's most likely not right, but thank god for OOP, New York's two OOP forwards have both gone very big, if they had scored their full scores then I'd be in a real spot of bother. As it sits now the game is very evenly poised, Pendles vs Libba should decide it.

Pendles (x2), Maguire, Pedersen, White and Spangher left to play

vs

Libba (x1.5), Macrae, Gibson, Cloke + 38

So it seems obvious to everyone that Pacific were tanking to try and drop their percentage down enough to get the number 1 pick. But what I don't understand is surely even naming their best team they would still get it. The percentages are so close between them and Beijing, whilst Pacific have to play Dublin this round and Beijing play London. Dublin should give Pacific a big enough beating anyway to get the number 1 pick without having to resort to tanking... :-X

How do you explain Bontempelli going from co-captain to an emergency that could have been loopholed against a struggling Berlin (which Purps will admit to)?

Their best team clearly isn't being fielded though, the chances are that the 'best' team probably would score better than the team will this week which is pretty poor on their part imo.

Well yeah, that's the thing... In the average week you would think Dublin would beat Pacific by a fair bit more than London would beat us, so it would've been fairly likely they would have finished bottom regardless... Seems like naming a team like they did is a pretty silly thing to do given the circumstances.

Yea but then you gotta think how long the tanking has gone on for, probably isnt just this week if Hurley isnt a regular in their team. Off with there heads and take their first rounder off them!

Two small forwards against Port (Blair and Elliot) as co-captains too.

I know that's what I'm getting at Nige. They're not playing their best team, but even if they played their best team this week against Dubin they would still get thumped by enough to give them last spot if you go by the average scores each week.

Pacific were always going to be belted by Dublin so why did Pacific make it so blatantly obvious that they wanted to lose by as much as possible. It is pretty clear what Pacific are doing this week.

Even if it wasn't tanking, then it would be poor coaching. Either way you look at it, it doesn't look good.

Bontempelli going down to Tassie to play Hawthorn.. Tough ask for a 10-gamer.

As for co-captains look at our list. We have Redden injured and Tmitch not getting a game. Tell me if you see a clear choice for captaincy. Elliot and Blair are 2 of 3 guys we have named averaging over 74, yet we're getting investigated for co-captaining them? Didn't trust Gibson up against Geelon and he only scored 75 so I think we made an okay decision.

We can't all have a perfect week at the selection table.

That's right and he was forgotten when teams were named this week, what's so wrong with forgetting a player?

No I will not explain the Co-Captains, nothing wrong with the players selected

Bonti is a ten game 18yr old, we thought the more mature Cunningham might perform better several  years into his career

Ease up guys, let's keep it constructive.

The Table below shows each Pacific player, how many AFL games played, how many WXV games played and the average of that player this year.

Please note we have had 1 more AFL game than WXV. Also note that the Islanders have been RAVAGED by injury. This does not include this round.

The biggest questions are why Michael Hurley and Marcus Bontempelli have been consistently overlooked (Hurley statistically the 3rd best forward but has only made it on the park 3 times). Also how Jack Martin keeps getting selected with an average of 37, who is only a 6 gamer 18year old and Harry Cunningham, also young with an average of 56.56 gets selected a fair bit.

Absolutely no problem with co-captains, they don't have anybody to choose from really with Redden out.

Look, while I can't 100% rule it out that tanking happened, I'm willing to say that it is poor coaching, and not a desire to tank, that's the problem here.

Jay/tbag - next year will be looked at closely, really. Forgetting a key player like Howe is not something all coaches do, not paying attention to take advantage of loop holes, sub rules, flooding and attacking also can only be described as poor coaching.

So I'm not saying you are tanking, but you guys need to lift your game a bit.

Master Q/Toga - a bit sympathy is required. You guys almost got done for this last year.

Some action should be taken surely. At the least shuffle them down a few draft picks?

Will set an example for future tanking.

Seoul have had no chance of finals the last two weeks so we could of gone for a pick but no we pumped our two closet opponents for picks ;)

It's a slippery slope. Some games have been lost because coaches have forgotten to name a team or activated a rule when they should have (I think Seoul lost a game because they forgot the sub rule once, shouldn't mean I move the Magpies down a few draft picks).

But, if people feel really strongly about it, send me a PM :/

The reason many of the "New rules" have not been implicated is because with such a young and low team, really there is no reason in weekening a certain area of the team weekly like "Resting" Or Flooding as an example, why would we rest any player? ???  We prefer the honest way ;)

Can't help but recall the trade where Pacific traded Rockliff (who is averaging 128 - you'd think he'd be perma-captain for them). If they hadn't made that trade, I daresay they'd be in a better position than they are now (mainly thanks to Rocky and his freakishness).

They got Redden (just averaging over 100), Hurley (who they've played 3 times despite being their 6th best player) and Sam Day (played every game but only 6 for Pacific).

Our forward line is pretty beastly though with Elliot, Blair, Howe, L Thomas and a guy I like the look of who scores well A Tomlinson, Hurley, Terry Milera who played a few good games once he came back, Day and with the injuries and subsequent  SUB prone Matt De Boer. The forward line is a hard gig to break into at the PI. Hurley has taken a while to even get enough footy this year and had fallen out of favour

You can always attack which allows you to play one more forward... some of those guys have hardly played anyway.

How does Howe v Brisbane not even crack an EMG gig against Tomlinson who starts playing a semi-decent team in Richmond. Hurley could have been included on the UT/INT over someone like Grigg at least... and no sub rule either which means you'll get Grigg's score  ::)

I stay out of these discussions for a reason. But this point, if you didn't want the trade passed, why do it to begin with? ??? Can't blame other coaches for passing it if you guys were HAPPY enough to agree to the trade. Seeing as you two are Co-Coaches, both you guys have to be happy with the trade, if one of you aren't, then down to miscommunication...

Guys, I'm cutting it here. Any other mention of tanking in this thread will be deleted. Anybody want to take matter further, PM Ossie. We've kinda started to go downhill with the comments steering more personal and attacking.

Now back into the final round.... I can't even find the post where Cape Town named their team, so can't even see the players to not cheer for :(.

Here you go.  :)

Thomas handy, but not enough for the captaincy. Curnow below average.

D: C O'Shea, J Pittard, C Guthrie, J Gwilt
M: J Kennedy (C), T Cotchin, D Tyson, E Curnow
R: S Martin
F: T Hawkins, C Bird, J Darling, S Reid
I: S Higgins, D Thomas (VC)

E: A Cooney, G Rohan, J Bennell

Also, is it too late to say sub rule in place? :-X

Looking at the players left, PNL SHOULD have this match :D. Now to hope Pumas lose >:D.

Is disappointing.

Mexico - 1574/13 with C and HGA

Bartel 101, Hodge 90, Hurn 89x1.1=98, Adcock 113
Goddard 79, Sidebottom, Ebert, Lewis 123
Sandilands 137x2=274(vc)
Pavlich Waite 127, Yarran 92, Riewoldt 96, Hitchcock (c) Goodes 84
Maric 115, Vince 103

Thompson, Waite, Goodes

Sub rule

Cairo - 1275/13 with one CC

D: N.Malceski 111, P.Hanley 119, B.Smith 82, E.Mackenzie 95
M: D.Beams (cc), D.Prestia 123, R.Douglas 92, M.Hutchings 89
R: S.Mumford 99x1.5=149(cc)
F: L.Breust 62, P.Puopolo 78, S.Dwyer, J.McGovern 110
I: M.Rischitelli 93, L.Dunstan 72

E: J.Clarke, J.Impey, A.Woodward

Pretty good effort in the end actually and I daresay we're going to post a good score that would beat quite a few teams but there isn't much we can do when Mexico's worst score is 79 and they have HGA on top of that.  :'(

Good to see the reserves also stumble over the line to secure a top 4 spot.

We had some hiccups early, but made the comeback and got it due to percentage ;). But that percentage gap :P.

Yeah, doubt we can replicate it next season unless we somehow manage to grab more depth during this off season who play more next season.
