Title: WXV Round 17 - Berlin/Beijing hold the keys to the 8, while 10 teams say goodbye
Post by: ossie85 on April 13, 2013, 02:48:03 PM
Round 17
(AFL Round 19)

Cape Town Cobras       v       Pacific Islanders       Newlands Cricket Ground
Mexico City Suns       v       Sao Paulo Pumas       Fireball Stadium, Mexico City
New York Revolution       v       Buenos Aires Armadillos       Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, USA
Paris Nice Lyon Reindeers       v       Wellington Warriors       State de France
Dublin Destroyers       v       Toronto Wolves       Crooke Park
Tokyo Samurai       v       Moscow Spetsnaz       National Olympic Stadium, Tokyo
Beijing Thunder v       Berlin Brewers       Beijing Olympic Park
Cairo Sands       v       London Royals       Borg El Arab Stadium, Alexandria, Egypt
New Delhi Tigers       v       Seoul Magpies       Tata Stadium, New Delhi

Highlights:

Cape Town v Pacific

The Cobras basically can't make the top 4 barring a percentage miracle, and definately can't miss the 8, but a win against Pacific will guarantee them a home final - a match they should win! But they should have won against Beijing also! The Islanders are still in danger of the wooden spoon - but unless Wellington upset PNL, they should have enough percentage to avoid it.

Mexico City v Sao Paulo

I'll admit it - I scheduled this match last hoping it would be the decider for the minor premiership. But Mexico City had other ideas! The Suns are in an interesting quandry, defeat the Pumas this week, and they are every chance of having to play them again in the first week of the finals! Lose, and they'll probably play Moscow. The Pumas won't want to play the Suns in the first week, so they'll be going all out also. A win might not be enough to secure a home qualifying final! With Buenos Aires only marginally behind on percentage.

New York v Buenos Aires

New York are still a mathematical chance of making the finals - but need Berlin, London and Dublin to all lose and they need to make up a bucket load of percentage. It ain't gonna happen, but they can finish the year with a positive ledger (9-8) which is a massive improvement for the team that came 2nd last in 2012. Buenos Aires have assembled a best 15 and again look very threatening, they will need to thrash New York to make sure they get enough percentage to pass Sao Paulo if the Pumas win - and a loss could see them drop to fourth and head to Mexico City in week 1.

PNL v Wellington

Realistically, a win can only save Wellington from the spoon. But surely PNL's luck won't be that bad?

Dublin v Toronto

If Dublin win, and Berlin and London win, Toronto will miss the finals in all likelihood! Incredible for a team that was pushing top 4 not long ago. I still think they'll make the finals though. While Dublin has been in stunning form, the highest scoring team in 3 of the last 4 weeks, they need Berlin and London to lose for them to make the finals. Unfortunate, as they looked to shake the finals up!

Tokyo v Moscow

Finally some joy for Tokyo and some pain for Buenos Aires.... The Samurai had one of the upsets of the year scoring a mammoth 158, and will be looking to do the same against Moscow. But Moscow have also hit form again! A loss for Moscow could see them drop out of the four, a win could theoritcally see them finish 2nd!

Beijing v Berlin

Where the hell did that come from? A massive score of 147 - having previously not cracked 130 this season - just about guaranteed the Thunder will avoid the spoon (which looked a certainty not long ago). Berlin will be nervous - a win, and they will make the finals (barring a percentage miracle from London), lose and they could be out (well, unless London and Dublin lose).

Cairo v London

Cairo could make the top 4 if Moscow is upset by Tokyo, and will probably host elimination final anyway if they lose (unless a percentage miracle from Toronto). The likelihood is they will finish 5th or 6th. London need to win, and they need to win well, and hope Berlin have a shocker against Beijing. London's destiny is not in its own hand.

New Delhi v Seoul

The consequences of this game will be massively inconsequential.

Mexico City Suns:

Def: B.Goddard (VC), C.Enright, J.Adcock, B.Lake.
Mids: S.Sidebottom, B.Ebert, L.Hodge, B.Vince.

Frwds: J.Bartel (C), N.Riewoldt, J.Lewis, D.Merrett.

We need Hurn back but doubt it's going to happen :/
Waite, Goodes and Lecras still miss while Riewoldt under a huge cloud.

You would still need one of the other teams to lose though to get in to the 8.

Tough though, with Toronto's lowest score this year 125 and your highest score this year 166. Both are recent though

But Moscow have also hit form again and potentially have star midfielder Jobe Watson returning.

I wish we had Watson :P maybe you meant star backman Jack Hombsch?

If I was the pumas' head coach, I'd want to play against the Suns in the first week. It means the only other time we'll have to run into the Suns is in the grand final. I'd prefer face the Suns when there's a double chance than in an elimination setup.

What a let down the Suns vs Pumas match has turned out to be. Only 4 points separate the teams in relation to points scored for the season, yet Mexico City have only suffered 1 loss whereas Sao Paulo have suffered 4 :(

Speaking of consistency I went through every teams scores for the year and worked out the standard deviations to see which team has been the most consistent, and the result may surprise a few! :o

Below is a list of all the teams, sorted from most consistent to least consistent...

TeamHighLowStd Dev
1.Warriors1191016.19
2.Cobras1531257.06
3.Wolves1571259.09
4.Spetsnaz16212410.10
5.Suns17113210.24
6.Samurai15811710.46
7.Royals15311910.57
8.Sands15911611.08
9.Islanders1389811.48
10.Pumas17313111.65
11.Magpies14511012.38
12.Reindeers15210912.55
13.Brewers15411012.63
14.Destroyers16612113.58
15.Revolution16611513.81
16.Thunder1479814.56
17.Tigers1338114.72
18.Armadillos18711219.29

Warriors the most consistent team in the competition!! Although hasn't helped them much as they are consistently scoring low scores! Armadillos probably haven't surprised anyone by being the most inconsistent, a high score of 187, but a low of 112 (a gap of 75) really is crazy!

At least if we crash in a heap, provided nothing crazy happens we can say we scored the highest ever score this season.

FMWXVs. They would score their highest score against us of 158 when we scored 152 lol.

Having 5 of them in the team is the killer. But hey, they play the giants I guess. Surely all of them won't go terribly?

Dirty day at selection yet again for the Wolves, Greenwood seemed the obvious Swallow replacement for both North and Toronto, but apparently not. Grima out with a surprise back injury, Edwards and Nicholson still on emergency lists, McGrath and Hickey dropped, Jolly and Young still out and obviously the loss of Swallow. Injuries really building up at the wrong time of the year, had a relatively clean sheet for most of the year but finals look a tough ask now and will be relying on key players to return to have any chance in any finals I do play.

PNL Reindeers

Back: J. Harbrow, D. Myers, M. Williams, P. Davis.
Mids: M. Priddis, K. Simpson (VC), N. Jones, C. Wingard (C).
Ruck: M. Lobbe.
Fwds: C. Rioli, T. Lynch, J.Westhoff, J. Grant.
Inter: D. Rich, D. Shiel.
Emg: L. Ball, T. Goldsack, J. Trengove.

IN: D. Shiel.
OUT: L. Ball.

Ball has been a bit too frustrating recently with injuries, so Shiel gets a call up back into the squad. Wingard gets the Captaincy this game as he hopes to show he can do well under the pressure. Grant has proven he could be a sleeper to watch out for next season in the forward line!

Masten and Sloane out are massive hits to the team. Midfield depth certainly being tested this week! Yet even though that is the case, last years rising star still can't make the side...

Yeah there are a couple of decisions I still need to make tomorrow. One being whether or not to play Devon Smith since he plays Melbourne and has the occasional massive game. The other whether to play Hill or not. He is so up and down, his last 7 games have been 101, 60, 50, 111, 61, 124, doesn't seem to have a middle ground. Also not playing at Subi may hinder him. But then Wallis' 96 last week was his top score of the season and his previous 4 games all under 70. If I was to drop Hill it would most likely be for Devon rather than Wallis at this point...

4th means you only need to win 3 games to win the grand final, 5th means you need to win 4 games. I know which one I would prefer ;)

Post by: Nails on August 02, 2013, 08:32:07 PM
You'd have to want to finish 4th...

Lose 1st week as 4th - You get a home final vs. a 5th-8th side in week 2, (if you won) prelim final @ home

Finish 5th - win 1st week, get an away game vs. a 1-4 team, lose eliminated

So the odds are you'd finish 5th and win or finish 4th and lose 1st week

The differences are:
Finish 4th = home final against crappier side in 2nd finals week
Finish 5th = away against a better side in 2nd finals week

Why would you want to finish 5th?

At half time the Dillos are on track to be: 520/4 at the conclusion of tonight's game.

520/4 + Dane Swan 150*2 this week... Dillos are back. Hopefully our 4 players continue, could end up being 350/4 but you never know. I'd like to dream. Need a big win in case Pumas win anyway.

6 players in play tonight, with only Pendles (C) and Ryder to play tomorrow.

Bit of a mixed bag in the quarter time scores, McLean killing it, 2 in the 20s, 3 between 10-20.

If I could get 550-650 from these 6 I'd be stoked.

flower. Everything was looking so good

Carrotz was on track for 95 after QT.

Barlow 108 and Scotland 100...

Now Carrazzo injured and subbed. There goes our chance of having a MONSTER score. Hopefully it doesn't hurt us next week. Hopefully we still have 15 next week.

Saturday Night Score Update
Half Time

Wolves:
M.Robinson - 65
B.McLean - 49
M.Johnson - 25
C.Jones - 37
Zorko - 25
Maguire - 39

Destroyers
Clarke - 36
Redden - 55
Mundy - 44

Robbo! Finally does something. Keep it up now.

McLean a 7 point quarter, how'd I know he'd struggle to ton after being on 42 at qtr time....Zorko and Johnson flowering lift! Very poor

Maguire and Jones I'd take an 80 from both of you.

Redden on fire for Holz

1,093/10

Not bad once you factor in we had to suffer a Carrazzo injury. Man, imagine what could have been with a Carrazzo 81 or so. We'd be on 1,150/10 with 4.5 players to come, one of which captain Swan...

Oh well, we'll probably still get a big score anyway. 160+ I reckon, provided Swan fires up tomorrow.

Pumas Progress

Hartlett, Houli 84, Roberton 95, Harwood 66
Ablett (C) 200, Zaharakis, Hill 78, Duncan 90
Minson
Walker 85, Roughead 67, Gunston 37, Wright
Adams 80, Jacobs

Total - 882/10

Disgusting performance so far this week. Only 1 player out of 10 has scored 100 or more, and Ablett only just managed to do that himself. Looks like I'm playing the Suns two weeks in a row. No point even flying back to Sao Paulo for the week, might as well jus stay and train in Mexico...

Think the Royals can conced even though only 5 have played.

Defenders: REID, Ben ; MACKIE, Andrew (78),  LAIRD, Rory; O'BRIEN, Harry
Mids:  PEARCE, Danyle (78);  HANNEBERY, Daniel ; STANTON, Brent; McVEIGH, Jarrad
Ruck: BELLCHAMBERS, Tom
Forwards: STAKER, Brent(42); LYNCH, Quentin ;  MAYNE, Chris (89);  BROWN, Johnathan (7)
Utilities: MACKAY, David; BROADBENT, Matthew
Emergencies:  TUOHY, Zach ; HILL, Josh; RAMPE, Dane
294/5

Brown with an injury ravaged 7 and no player yet tonning it up. Kiss the finals goodbye.

D: H. Shaw, C. Dixon 102, R. Murphy, D. Fletcher
M: R. Griffen (c), N. Fyfe 138, A. Treloar 98, C. Ward (vc) 158
R: S. Tuck (OOP) 18
F: D. Martin 109, A. Monfries, M. Walters 73, L. Adams 110
U: J. Thomas, J. Darling 81

Currently 887 from 9, very good considering we had an OOP-sub score 18 and Walters got screwed over (73 for 4 influential goals?!??!?). Ward and Fyfe very good, along with our three other tons.

Really really disappointing week from Toronto, with only 1 ton so far in Pedo. McLean 42 at quarter time and finishes on 77 is appalling, but to be expected from him. Shaw looks like he's done a shoulder, and was having an ordinary day anyway. Please come back Grima!

Robbo I'd take a 90 from him but 65 at half time would have liked him to ton up. Seriously getting sick of your shower Zorko, after chasing you so hard over summer. Hopefully it's just second year Blues and he'll bounce back to his old self next year, but for now I'd drop you if I had people to drop you for  ::) Once Jolly comes back we may reconsider your spot in the team Dayne

Interesting how this game is deciding whether I get a home final, away final or drop out of the 8 completely. Credit to you Oss to have the middle rung of this competition so close this late in the year!

Home final would be great, but unlikely from here. Finishing 7th would also be better than 8th as Cairo are in rampaging form.

vs Holz it comes down to:

Pendles (x2), Ryder

vs

Boak, Gray, Hurley, 80, HGA (currently 38 from Hill)

Robbie, remember that time when you used to play for me? Yeah, well do what you did then and score shower/go down with yet another injury.... ::)

Need Pendles to get somewhere in the vicinity of 150...and then it's still game on.

Cairo - 988/11

D: P.Hanley 108(VC), N.Malceski, D.Stanley 67, E.Mackenzie 81
M: D.Beams (C), R.Douglas, D.Armitage 104, M.Hutchings 127
R: S.Mumford
F: D.Hale 86, L.Breust 53, L.Thomas 70, P.Puopolo 97
I/U: N.Dal Santo 115, S.Grigg 80

E: C.Pearce 48, T.Dickson, J.Gibson 100

That's not bad at all. A few meh performances. Luke Breust's 53 is our HGA, but we have London beat. With Eski, Dougie, Mummy and Beamer as skipper. Hopefully we can get about 400-500 points. I'm really more worried about our World Cup match at the moment.

44 point 3rd quarter from Daniel Cross.

3rd Quarter really is the quarter of the Dillo this week. 60 odd 3rd quarter for Dalziell yesterday, 44 point 3rd for Cross today.

We'd be on track for something HUGE if not for a carrotz injury :(

Heater first, BobBob fifth and Dixon sixth. Then you have to go a long way to find our next best :P

D - H. Scotland 119, S. Burgoyne 102, SD Thompson 121, J. Lyons (OOP)
M - D. Swan (C), D. Cross 109, M. Barlow (VC) 110, K. Cornes
R - D. Cox 149
F - S. Johnson 106, D. Petrie 102, B. Harvey 130, J. Schulz
B - A. Carrazzo 24, B. Dalziell 130

EMG - P. Stewart, T. Logan, J. McKenzie

1,202/11

With Cross's score pre-scaling.

Man our only player to score under 102 was an injury! Imagine if we didn't have the Carrotz injury! We could be absolutely flying. Though Kornes has started slowly in his game.

More getting excited than complaining. A sorta "what if" excitement scenario. We could be on track to beat our own record WXVs score with a Carrotz 90 (which he was on track for)

But we'll be happy :) especially if we make it into 2nd.

This round is painful though. We have 17 playing and injuries to Carrotz and P. Stewart = we might be flowered for finals.

complain
/kəmplān/
Verb
Express dissatisfaction or annoyance about a state of affairs or an event.

I was just stating factual information. You can't say it was complaining. Get over it ::)

This is literally what you do week in week out. You just reinforced our point.

Now THAT is factual information.

No dissatisfaction in that. Just a lol at only an injury can stop the Dillos. I'm not annoyed or dissatisfied. I am excited. Dongs are going to SMASH it.

You say I complain in that post but the accusation of complains was before I made that post.

There's also no complaining in there.

An injury = body pain resulting from something on field

This round is painful because we have had 2 injuries.

2 injuries = 2 lots of pain = painful. Not complaining. Factual statements.

Bad game from Toronto, only 2 tons and both small ones as well. Lucky to scrape into the 8 I guess!

Would have much preferred the win though to finish in 6th. Ah well, bring on Cairo!

163 is very encouraging. Captain Swan's 108 was nowhere near the best on our team.

163 with an injured 24 from a player is very encouraging. If we have 15 players next week we can defeat anyone. Once you factor in we're going to have HGA two weeks running... WATCH OUT.

Hopefully you lose this week Maca and we smash you in the prelim. Suns not even in the Granny would be nice.

Provided we win week 1 of finals.

OUCH! You guys could have used it :-\.

And PNL won :D. Daz said put Wingard as Captain and boy did that pay off! Certainly had some guys underperforming but came away with a win :).

In hindsight that would've been beneficial but I've got too much integrity for that ;) That, and I legit thought we'd lose with a full strength line-up.

We deserve a prioirty pick. Our list is arguably worse than some of those below us :(

Seoul should be embarrassed though, they lost to a side containing Dawson :P
