Woops :p
We drove from San Fran down the coast to LA and then onto Vegas and the canyon.
It is a awesome way too see the US (via car)
San Fran has some of the best things to see, Alcatraz, Mexican quarter, bay area, fishermans wharf - make sure you try the crab chowder in the soar dough bowl!!
We were non-plussed on LA, did all the normal stuff
Vegas was awesome, wanted more time to visit all the hotels to see what they offer, each one is an experience in itself, if you like Golf I played a round at the Bali Hai Golf Course - AMASING!
http://www.balihaigolfclub.com/course/photo-gallery/
In order the places we visited best to worst - San Fran, Vegas, Canyon, San Diageo, LA
That is a beautiful course Syd. :o

Really is special. Best thing was by that stage of our trip it was on company money, so we didn't have to cough up for anything!
If you are going in the next couple of months Yosemite may be off limits due to the snow.
San Francisco was my favourite one - If into timber and tall trees a visit to Muirwoods out of SanFrancisco is well worth it and do Saualito on the way back. Fishermans Wharf is a must including rides on cable car and as has been siad you have to try the Clam, Crab or seafood chowder. Wax Musuem on Fishermans wharf is well worth the money.
As has been siad previously LA is over rated once you do Disneyland, Universal Studios and The Hollywood walk of fame.

The NHL isn't even running atm and to be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if it never runs again. You could witness the VFL equivalent though for Ice Hockey...
Flying out from Adelaide... provided it's to anywhere but a 3rd world country I'd make sure you didn't get a return ticket.

Got back from the states on the 2/11. As said the drive down the coast is good San to LA. Town of Carmel Seal Bay & you can see the house where Play Misty for Me was made. clint Eastwoods old House. Anahiem Not only for Disneyland / Universal Studios > Also Knotts Berry Farm & if open Six Flags Magic Mountain, getting around for $5 a head on the transportation system all day. IHop & on Katella there is Bubba Gumps as well as California Pizza, next to Garden Walk.
Get out of Anahiem for shopping like the Buena Park mall Sears for real good clothing & the prices are ok.
Vegas all the Casinos, remember each block is 1 mile so wear comfortable shoes. Get the Duece Bus when tired, different rates for hours concerned. Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam Tours, Head down to old Vegas Freemont Street for the Night light up, head up to the top of the Stratasphere for some little rides (LOL) or New York New York ride. Shows as well as eateries a plenty. Premium Outlets Southern (Elcalibur Hotel end) cheapest for shopping of the 2 advertised North the other one.
Night chopper ride BUT make sure you sit on the left side best views. Golf is also good in a little town called Mesquite as well as great Hotels & food. Fashion Mall opposite Wynns is pretty good for shopping. The Treasure Island night Boat show (Free) is ok to watch as well as the mirage water show, Venation has boat rides inside n out also. Circus Circus as it says as well as a theme park inside.
San Fran as previous comments from all the above as well as Alcatraz, The wharf etc.
LAX airport a doosy as took me 2 hours to get thro Customs as arrived around lunch time. So yeah Good luck.

We have tickets, if its cancelled we foriet them, simple as that, still got 3.5 weeks till we get there ;)
I'm going to America in a few weeks myself, very keen for it, but I got a question for ya...
What did you do re: phones? Did you go on a pre-paid cap over there, or did you switch carriers to like AT&T or something? Oh and were you still able to access Facebook and Instagram etc?
As if you need ideas for what to do in vegas! :P haha
I am never going to that spud of a country

If you have a tri-band phone, (easy to find out on the net, iphones are) then all youll need to do is contact your telecompany and ask for your phone to be put on roaming. You can still access celluar data but youll be paying through the nose. If you have a dualband phone you need purchase a prepaid phone and SIM over there with cheap international rates, dunno about data on that onw.
Unlike Australia, in America and Canada every hotel has free wireless. For facebook etc Id just take a laptop/iPad

I would suggest against roaming... I've heard a lot of people who've had really bad experiences with it- generally it's very expensive to use (obviously), but things like automatic updates etc. that can happen with smart phones cost a showerload.
when I went overseas with a group of my friends we were all advised ny the travel agency to just grab a cheap pre-paid phone over there, rather than to use global roaming :P
Did not bother with a phone when I was in the states. Used skype to call back home to family. There is ample free Wifi all over the place in the states. Just watch some Hotels though as they charge for it.
You can buy a phone and a months prepaid very cheaply as well if you need it. Little as $10us but do research first.

You can also get different cards through travelgear.com.au which I use. just depends on the time you will be spending there vs the card then. have had no problems & make it my own hotspot. as ringo says tho watch the hotels as do charge if not included.

what on? ;)
sights, sounds, anything haha
Going to NY, Vegas, DC and LA
Cant tell you anything on NY or DC
Vegas, you cant leave there without going to M&M world and the coke superstore (both on the strip near the bellagio, iirc). Other than that just dont get lost in the maze of casinos or get whisked away by one of the multitude of prostitutes. ;)
LA, massive city, Disneyland and Universal Studios are must do's, Knotts Berry Farm (theme park) and Six Flags are also fun (another theme park). Might be too late but see if you can snaffle nosebleed section tickets to a Clippers game, only 30 a pop and a great experience, dont try the Lakers though, Nosebleed section tixs are 180 ::). If you're looking for something really cool to do go to the Warner Brothers Studios and get a guided tour (paid ofc) You might get to see a person you know. Youll see the sets of the Mentalist and the Big Bang Theory (if not filming, which they usually are) the sets of Two and Half Men, youll sit on the friends couch and youll see so much other stuff it isnt funny. great place! :)
Hope that helps!
