Title: AFL Team Draft
Post by: Scrads on June 26, 2012, 09:29:30 PM
Hey guys, this idea was floated in the English 15s draft thread and was pretty popular so I am just bringing it here now to see if it will go ahead.

Basically I am thinking we try and draft the best team we possibly can (taking into account actual AFL performance and structure, so not fantasy points which means we need FBs and CHBs and stuff) I guess for the team you would want if it were playing a grand final at the conclusion of the draft. Maybe we could actually have a voting system at the end where 1 by 1 we match up teams and have a knockout comp to decide the winner.

Things like injuries and suspensions would be ignored, it would be assumed that every player is fit and ready to play. If it was a knockout comp, we would need 8 or 16 teams, how many would people prefer ?

Also, I think it is fair if we dont just use the AFL team names, maybe get inventive and make our own ;) Anyway let me know who, how and what you are keen for :)

EDIT: Also just adding, I would definitely want to enforce a 24-hour time limit so only commit if you are active enough to do so. Obviously pms forward and stuff can help :)

List of Coaches:
Scrads: Atlanta Hawks
KoopKicka: Seattle Sonics
BB0618: LA Lakers

monstrum: Boston Celtics

JBs Hawks:
Noz: Dallas Mavericks
whatlez:
picker_man: Miami Heat
Jukes: OKC Thunder

meow meow: Harlem Globetrotters

Teams matched up randomly h2h in a knockout format, voters would vote for the best side. This is for actual AFL performance instead of fantasy scores, so you wouldnt get many votes if you didnt have a proper FB (Darren Glass) and such.

I'm in Scrads.

Do we need some clarification around how many of each position should be selected or is it just open slather?

Basically name your team like a normal 21+ sub + 3 emergencies I reckon.

As soon as we have 16 coaches playing. I was thinking a 48 hour time limit for the first round, and 24 hours for every round after that.

Need 8 or 16 for a knockout style comp, unless you have a different idea on how to run the judging...?

With 12 can't do a knockout, but maybe could do pools or something.

Not up with NBA teams but I'll take the Knicks (if they still exist...)

Yeah whoops.  Just thought 16 would weaken teams a bit as that's 352 players that need to be chosen.

Would rather keep the KO comp and keep it simple tbh, 16 teams shouldnt be too hard, there are 18 teams in the league after all. Probs makes it better to judge because it wont be just all guns.

I'm in. I reckon 16, but if it starts getting too many coaches, then like the others we can have assistants, although not really necessary as its not like a 5 year comp like the English, Worlds etc..

We should choose our own team names, but do we have to choose a city or anything?
Title: Re: AFL Team Draft

So we just pick a full team and field 22 guys, in their position so 6 backs, 6 forwards etc?

Yeah 16 it is. And NBA teams it is, just go to the NBA site and pick from the remaining teams if you dont know them.

Assistants are allowed, but yeah not sure how valuable they will be.

Probably an open vote. But I would encourage people to give ratings out of 10 for Backs, Forwards and mids (including ruck) so they dont just browse over each team they actually focus on each area.

Yes, I will scrap the emergencies.

6 backs.
6 forwards
5 mids
1 ruck
3 interchange
1 sub.

Just confirming guys.

Drafting the best team you can for an AFL Match (no relevance to fantasy footy).

Injuries and Suspension ignored.

Teams of 22. 6 backs, 6 forwards, 5 mids, 1 ruck, 3 interchange, 1 sub.

First round time limit 48 hours, every round thereafter is 24 hours.

Judging:
I was thinking that when we go to h2h matches, all the other coaches vote for who they think will win. Maybe I have to give everyone a vote structure like:

Defence:
Midfield:
Forwards:
Flexibility:
Balance:

and you state who is better in each category, so one team will obv win 3 votes out of 5 (at least) and therefore get that persons overall vote.

Thoughts ?

Agree that there needs to be a structure for allocating the vote. Concern might be gamesmanship - couldn't competing coaches vote for weaker teams to increase their chances of winning?

Also what are you calling this Scrads?

Have 2 conferences, 14 teams split into 2 conferences.

Conference 1
A,B,C,D,E,F,G

Conference 2
H,I,J,K,L,M,N

Everyone round someone from the first conference plays someone from the second conference while head to head matches go on like the same say

Ah, ok.
I think we should start tomorrow, i mean whatlez doesn't even know about this, does he? Also you've only gotten people from one night, if someone isn't on today, then they miss out(for now anyways). Should give it a day at least. Pretty sure if you asked all the English coaches, they'd all want to join.

Well we can start now, like you said it will only get to whatlez before it stops. anyone else who joins can just get added to the end. the time limit is 48 hours, no one will exceed that for sure. So go ahead and start now in the draft thread :)

The closest thing i can think on is when you subscribe to the hearldsun thing after each match you can vote the best 5 players in the games 5,4,3,2,1. Then it gives you a list of all the players and where they are ranked for the game.

Where would the fun of that be ? people would just line up all the players and pick the highest ranked down to the lowest ranked players...
