Title: Robbie Gray
Post by: PICCOLLO on January 19, 2012, 01:01:46 PM
Thoughts on Robbie Gray this year?  Will get midfield time but is he a trade in target given his end to last year?
Ive notice that few teams have him in the rate my sc section.

Too injury prone for my tastes.  He's likely to injure himself reaching for the half time oranges in round one.

Probably the only one from Port that would come under consideration for me. Finished of 2011 well. But no.

i'd say no, just avoid port players, period!! except rookies.
i like him as a player, but fact of the matter is his consistency won't be there for whole season due to the team he is in. (unless they come out and dominate - who knows??  :-X)

so you pay 491k for him from a 91 average, he seems to lift his average by around 15 ppg over last few years which is good. but diminishing returns i think!! he would need to average 100 to make it worth while. i reckon you can find soemone else who might increase their average by more, therefore being a better buy. i don't think he'll hit 100 average only based on being at port, at another team i'd prob pick him.

Like you , have given Gray  fair bit of thought. Think he is priced about $50k to much especially when you can have  ----------
wait for it ---  Sidebottom M/F for $38,000 less. Word is he is training with Collingwoods midfielders, but There is something about Gray but I can't put in to words that will make sense, perhaps just a strong gut feeling that this may be his year and it ain't long ago Port were almost referring to him as the new messiah. But Sidey for me at this stage, Cheers and good luck.

Yeah probably not for me, i think there are more reliable options around his price. I always think he has the potential to score big, but i dont think he will in a struggling team like port

Put him into the Missy Higgins basket - burn me once but not twice!

I had him locked in until 2 days ago.

All this injury disaster at Port has got me staying away from any players. The stars were aligning during the offseason

I had  up to 4 players as starters but have decided against it.

It would seem their season is over, with plausible excuses, before it began.

I just dont think they will win many games again despite their draw & coaching staff...because of injury ..... which affects potential big SC scores

The Port fans call him "Biscuit Man" because he seems to break easy

He wont be in my side!

Higgins basket means he burns you at least 3 times.  Gray good for a few more chances.

Probably not for me as I think there are better potential players at around the same price Sidebottom has been mentioned but Zaha and a smokey Leigh Adams may be worth considering at the price.

One to look out 4.  IMO.

yep NO , just not cheap enough to take the risk on but anyone who takes him stands to gain a lot because all signs point to him really lifting, you could bet if he played for another side almost any other side there would be a lot more interest.

He is a great unique pick but not one that i think will pay off.

leigh adams had pre season surgery though didn't he?? he was awkwardly priced last season and i think he is awkwardly priced again this season!! looks the goods as a player, got a bit of chappy about him

I have the strong gut feeling too that he may just breakout this year with a lot of midfield time and average 95-100! But I'm not brave enough to pick him still!

Yeh not for me purely because port are so sh!t.

Only the mesiah GAJ can smash out scores in a bottom side.  :P

No. He isn't cheap. He isn't a prolific scorer. He plays for a bottom side. He has some history with injuries.

a couple of years ago people were saying he was going to be tbe next ablett, didnt quite happen. has been rising each year tho and has the potential to be anything. havent heard much on him this preseason have to wait and see i guess. few good picks around his price tho.

Don't do it. Much better options around his price.

his numbers are freakishly like GAJ except the fact he plays for port puts me off!!! however we must remember he played for port last year and scored well, i cant see his scores dropping or port being worse.

Lol who is comparing Gray to Ablett? That's like saying Christensen and Breust are going to be better than Ablett because their stats are better at the same age.
Title: Re: Robbie Gray
Post by: Usman on February 15, 2012, 11:24:56 PM
I didnt say he would be as good as Ablett im just saying his stats are similar and he is a classy player that has a big impact on games whilst being on the rise. I wish i could compare christensen and bruest at the same age but i cant, dont have abletts SC scores prior 06 Ablett is ahead of both at trhe same age anyway. A key i look for is the abilty of a player to score 120+ on ocassions as Ablett did as a youngster as Gray did last year and they must be far better at SC than DT. Just my theory for this type of player.

I think we all know Gray is no Ablett and will never be.. There are several players that have similar stats or better to Ablett over his younger years will they get near his status now? Highly unlikely

Hell im a mad Collingwood supporter and as much as i love Swan & Pendles i can say with no doubt they arent as good as the all mighty Ablett and they would be in the top 5 players in the league.

Ablett is a once in a generation player one of the best ever. Arguable THE best ever to say Gray will be is good is a big call, but to say gray could score similar to ablett is plausible might not have the cieling Ablett does but if gray avg'd 100 this year id definately take it. alot of the great scoring fwd's are ageing so you can save the money on them and maybe pick this bloke or one of the players around his price and save big $$$ for the same scores? if any of you have seen Gray play he has got that Ablett X factor about him that means he will score higher SC than DT. Very valuable.

Summary: Not saying he will be as good as Ablett im just saying he is the next Ablett like player, and at the height of his career i predict a 110-115 avg. injuries permitting.

110-115 to Gray? No chance, not even in his best year.

Wow i cant beleive i actually said he would avg 110-115 earlier in the pre-season WTF was i thinking. I dont even have him in my team now, haha 90-105 avg is his range TBH. He does play like Ablett though, not he next Ablett scoring wise however. the player that reminds me the most of Ablett that isnt the man himself is Cotchin watch the hips and the way he moves, VERY SIMILAR doesnt impact the scoreboard as much as ablett though but i think he could be as good across the ground in a few years.
