really unlikely unless he carves up NAB and then gets named round 1...

maybe more for supercoach.

if he is named round 1 AND has a decent preseason I might give him a go, he only needs 5 or 6
decent games and he will jump in price, can see plenty of the ball, watch his role pre season.

If he was 50% chance to get delisted you would have to think no way.

He's young though so there's plenty of chance for him to break into the side

he is rookie priced and there are whispers he may be moved to a winger type position. does he deserve to be on people's radars? will he get games and be a decent cash cow?

was a 50/50 between him and setana as to who got cut from the blues. Unless he has a ripper pre-season, or carlton get injuries on a ridiculous level, he won't be playing a lot of games.

is he too old and past it?

no, he's still quite young.

Just doesn't seem to fit in the blues structure now they have a decent team.

He was on the outer after injuries and bad form cruelled his last 18 months. Since he was almost delisted he seems to be a new man, smashing the preseason by all reports out of Visy Park. Watch for him in the NAB and if he performs expect him to get another chance in the back 6. As there are a few spots up for grabs atm (esp. with Gibbs moving into the mids) so expect him to push for one.

If he is named round 1 he'll be an 80% chance of lining up for McRath.

laidler duigan yarran all locks in the defence for the blues is what gets gibbs released to the mid/half fwd role, add to them scotland carrots russel , then you slide down to jamison then you got a LOT of options to "fill the spots" i have little hope for bower but i guesss he's as good a chance as the other 10 or so vying for the one or two spots not taken :)

Brown says Bower is capable of taking the opposition's third ''tall'' or be used as a rebounding half-back, the player's preferred position. Bower could also be shifted to a wing with the Blues preaching versatility.

Bower is aware of the selection fight awaiting, but it's one he will be primed for. ''I am just hanging out for this year and will put my best foot forward and hopefully play 20-odd games,'' he said.

Still feel he isnt in the best 22 but with the likes of Duigan looking to be out early on he will definately get a chance.

I more on the side of not picking him but if he lights up the nab and is on a wing as suggested Ill be very tempted.

Yeah im more on the side of not picking him also but if he actually looks like he gonna play round 1 unfortunatley i might have to chuck him in he's too cheap to ignore

The addition of Duigan to half back ruined bowers chances. He wont get back in id leave him alone

Yarran out of Back Pocket, Duigan and Laidler in Half Back the Blues completed their defence last year and will be knocking on the top 2 because of this

Just gonna give this a bump, with Jamison being sidelined for 5-6 weeks with the stress fracture in his back, it is a good opportunity for Bower to show what he can do in the NAB cup in both an attacking and defending sense.
With Duigan already injured and 2 other talls in Mitchell and Rowe having interrupted pre-seasons he could be someone to look at.

Problem with this is that Bower does not play well as a second tall defender. In 2010, he was physically monstered by his opponents whenever he filled that position. His higher DT scores (2 x 100+, IIRC) in that season came when he was released from the lock-down roles and played a more attacking game (which he is really well suited to).

Unfortunately, when he played the attacking role in the few games he got in 2011 he seemed to have lost his confidence and handballed much more often than 2010. Hopefully if he can get into the right headspace, use his run and carry and increase his kick to handball ratio then he could be a smokey.

Bower plays as a tall defender.  Our backline is far from star studded with the two key talls being Lachie Henderson at CHB and Jammo FB.    He wont  tip either of those blokes out.

However laidler,Duigan, watson, thornton are all basically spazzos and fully fit he could easily get a game ahead of any of those.

Pre season form and getting picked round 1 are essential for mine.  he is farkin cheap tho.

'Spazzos'? Bit harsh on Laidler and Duigan (and Watson, as he is still a developing player).

I agree that he's competing against them for a place in the ones, though. His pre-season seems to be on track so far (touch wood) while Duigan's isn't, so he's gotta be in the mix.

So what's peoples thought's on Bower now?? Will he see consistent games in 2012? Will he recapture some of his past form?? Has to be a huge smokey for mine!

I have been tossing up on this one too. at 130k has to be in contention if named.

The problem is that he will play as 2nd tall until Jammo returns and that WILL kill his scoring.

If he still gets a game once Jammo returns then he could well fill Laidler's spot until he returns and then.... who knows!

Even with very early games, I don't see him as a risk worth taking (I'd prefer Clarke, Guthrie or even Khunt!) but who am I to judge - there are plenty of others very bullish on him.

Especially relevant -
"I don't think the coaching staff now just look at him as a tall defender, we look at him, he's got some other positions he can play and I think the versatility is really important in the modern game in regards to rotating.''

Ignore my previous comment!

Not keen on him... Smedts is a better choice.
