The Karma system been up for 2 minutes... I'm negative 1 already... What? How?
I like how we can give each user Karma but...
I don't think it'll overall ween out bad posts in the slightest.
Say a user like myself posts constructive, nice posts 80% of the time...
I might make 20 posts a day and make 4 stupid offensive posts per day, that wouldn't be on, but because of the 16 positive posts I'd make I dare say I'd be getting a lot of good karma.
Is someone going to give you BAD karma because of 1-2 bad posts (that should receive it) when you've made a bunch of good posts?
I have turned on the inbuilt karma system of the SMF forum software, as a test in response to some recent feedback.
Instead of calling it karma, I'm calling it Premium. At the moment it's restricted to level s of Premium for each poster, not for each individual post. You can cheer or boo each user under their name in the threads.
I will probably investigate mods for upvoting and downvoting individual posts like a Slashdot or Reddit, as that's a more useful tool for figuring out who's making a nuisance of themselves by posting rubbish.
Well I cheer you m0nty :)
the boo on monty certainly wasn't just me testing the system and/or trolling...
:P
This is definitely a good innovation.
I've been discussing this karma system with hawk_88 for a few months now, it'll be interesting to see what the initial results from the tests are, though I'd be more for a karma system per individual post rather than per user.
I'm trying to install a post karma mod but Unix file permissions have never been my strong suit, and I'm failing miserably. :'(
Uh oh. Didn't see this and I kept clicking them thinking they were links :-X Major blond moment.
Is there any way to remove that karma I gave C4? I certainly didn't intend to do that :-\
I do like this though, have thought FF should implement a system like this one for a while :)
I don't know computer stuff, what is karma
On my iPod it is hard to click the right thing. I tried to cheer one of ossie's post but accidentally clicked boo. I am sorry to ossie,

Oh was it a feedback system?
Sorry a to a couple of people I pressed boo thinking something interesting would happen :-[

Thats a good thing. I am on another forum that has the same thing and they just keep rorting the system by handing out a lot in quick sucession.
What happens if you get too many boos, do I have the record, 11.
It doesn't really matter In my changed opinion
Just try and give more constructive feedback to people

EDIT: I found a guy with 12 boos, so no you arent.
Just take it in good humour like C4 a couple of posts up

I was wondering that! Figured it was per user rather than per post going on this topic alone. The user always has the same amount no matter what.
I love this idea as it'll allow people to see those who give out good advice compared to those who don't.

The member should have to be on-line to receive cheer/boo.

When you look at peoples name when they have posted there is a cheer or boo thingy
Cheer=+1 Boo=-1
Should e under the block thing under your username

LOL! That'd be good if you could cheer/boo yourself ;D. What i meant was i am unable to give others a cheer. Was just wandering as i have read a few really good posts in the players/trades section and thought they were worthy but unable to do so?
I'm guessing m0nty has put in a system where only those who have posted X amount of times are allowed to Cheer/Boo others. No point allowing new users to do so as people can just make plenty of accounts and Cheer themselves (Not that anybody would do this ;)).

Don't the newbies deserve the same right? After all, we can vote for them....with much power cometh great responsibility, as our newest mod will surely attest to :)
I strongly believe that there should be the Cheers and Boos for individual comments only, and not for the user.

I think they do but can lead to many people coming on a kinda bribing people to "rate their teams" for a Cheers (e.g Like this season where there was you rate mine and I'll rate yours mentality). It can be manipulated so think m0nty has done the right thing if he's made it so you need say 100 posts to cast the votes as many of the thousands of users don't come on enough to know who's been giving out great advice or not. Also can lead to people making accounts and all to vote for themselves :-\.
However, having votes casted in favour of some new users (such as Apple and Mailman) will encourage them to keep on posting as the Regulars value their advice showing they've earned respect (and will hopefully encourage others to chip in with their two cents).
I agree that all people deserve the right to cast a vote, but can certainly see why they may be held only for those who are seen to be posting a bit rather than just once in a blue moon.

i would expect to eventually have the largest neg rep
Hmmmmm, this is the exact reason i think this system is flawed. From what i have seen Cicjose makes some fantastic contributions to the forum yet whats up with the boo's? I think the only way to do it is like the majority of other forums do and that is to have a thumbs up/thumbs down system per post. That way it doesn't just become a popularity contest.
What I fear as well. I prefer per post but this is as good as it'll get for the timebeing. Nobody is taking it too seriously which is why I've hardly used it besides on users who deserve the cheer (Haven't given out a Boo yet).
Again I have to put a stop to off topic nonsense. Thread closed.
