Some of you may have seen this question floating around on facebook... It honestly shocked me that about 75% of people who answered this got it wrong. I asked my wife and sister this question, and they also got it wrong :( Which made me sadder, because they are both really good at mathematics :(

I will not rest and to each of you are convinced what the correct answer is!

It has been bugging me something chronic.

In this case yes. However BODMAS isn't as clear cut as many people think. There are a great deal of syntax that isn't consistent and often maths curriculum pick a standard. It is too early for me to think of a simple example...

Haha that is true hawk. I think what people could have trouble with in this is in the middle where there is a minus 1, I almost missed it assuming it was just plus 1...

oops i voted 16 i didnt see the minus sign. I havent slept for about 22 hours i should get to that i have to get up in less than 3 hours.

I answered 16, didnt even notice the minus, im 46 so along time out of school, bodmas would mean you do the multiplication part 1st, so doing that then adding and subtracting the rest i get 14, am i completely wrong, close or should i just go back to school.

We learn it as BEDMAS - The 'E' stands for exponents.

I couldn't work out how to get 4 for a while but figured it out :)

The equation is written like this:
1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1-1+1+1+1+1+1+1x0 = ?
To make that equal 4 just add a few brackets so it looks like this:
(1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1)-(1+1+1+1+1+1)+1x0 = ?

I think it is 9. Brackets are 3, so it is 6/2=3
3*3=9

I think people just put 0 when they skim the question, and without really thinking about it.
Also, I was always taught that it was BOMDAS, not BODMAS  :-\

Defidently BODMAS, but like i said earlier, somewhere it's been changed to BEDMAS. I learnt it as BODMAS until year 4, then BEDMAS. The 'E' is for exponents, like powers and shower.

So there is more than one way of doing this. It depends on the syntax standard that you follow, specifically with regards to implicit multiplication which is what is occurring here. By implicit I mean 2a as opposed to 2 x a.

The standard followed in Victorian schools at least is to evaluate what is inside the brackets first, the left to right for multiplication and division, followed by subtraction and addition:

= 6 / 2(2 + 1)
= 6 / 2 x 3
= 3 x 3
= 9

The other method is to treat the implicit multiplication as part of the brackets:

= 6 / 2(2 + 1)
= 6 / (2 x 2 + 2 x 1)
= 6 / (4 + 2)
= 6 / 6
= 1

Now I only understand this at a very basic level, but from what I understand the first is generally the followed standard, however, it is not used exclusively and is a contentious issue for mathematicians. Thankfully I don't associate myself with those types as this would be a very boring pub discussion topic...

 I answered 0, and i'll explain why. No.1-- I've been out of school for 34 years. No2-- i had 15 beers in the fridge this morning - drank 10 , dropped 1,- drank the rest. Just asked the missus for a beer and she said there is 0 left. So i figured 0 is 0 (at least in the fridge- bugger)

Someone also told me they learnt it your way - except it was BIDMAS - I, for indices.

PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction)
Parentheses may be called Brackets, or symbols of inclusion and Exponentiation may be called either Indices, Powers or Orders, and since multiplication and division are of equal precedence, M and D are often interchanged, leading to such acronyms as BEDMAS, BIDMAS, BODMAS, BERDMAS, PERDMAS, and BPODMAS

Yup.

Type it into Excel or a scientific calculator (regular calculators will get it wrong) and you'll see it is 14 :)

Right so, 18/30 got it wrong :(

Assuming the 15, 16, 17 are just reading the question wrong.

So the solution, just to explicitly state it, is:

1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1-1+1+1+1+1+1+1x0

= 1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1-1+1+1+1+1+1+0 (you always do multiplication and division before addition and subtraction)

=14 (noting the minus 1 hidden in there)

Someone said 4, and I'm guessing that is because they did addition before subtraction. That is the confusing thing about BODMAS sometimes...

BODMAS means

You do brackets and orders first, from left to right.

After that you do division and multiplication next, from left to right.

And then the addition and subtraction, from left to right.

So you don't to addition BEFORE subtraction, you do them at the same time.

So it really should be (BO)(DM)(AS) lol ;)
