Dear FanFooty members, c4v3m4n here.
Being a lover of trivia, I thought I'd start up an AFL trivia competition! :D
The rules would be pretty simple:
1. Every Monday morning, I'll post a set of 10 questions here, all related to a common theme (Goalkickers, 2000s, Pre-season etc)
2. Your answers must be PM'ed to me
before 7pm FRIDAY night that week.
3. Use your own noodle, not Google. Your honesty is the only way to enforce this rule.
Please play fair.
4. The questions will range in difficulty. Therefore, easy questions will be worth 1pt, medium question 2pts, hard questions 3pts and the super-hard question is worth 5pts. You wont get any points for an incorrect answer.
5. I'll post the answers here on Saturday, along with the results and the ladder. Persons on equal points will be separated by earliest entrant.
6. Have fun!
So, who'd be up for this? :)

There may be a category on DT/SC stats, who knows... ;)
I'll join. Sounds good. :)
im in, my knowledge of dreamteam is better than real afl but i will give it a shot.
*puts hand up*
Well I know little about AFL history so guess that rules me out :P.
Maybe in a few weeks we can start up Trivia Night once again?
I'm a bit like HP, don't know TOO much about AFL history so don't think I will join.
I actually know quite a bit about afl history.
I wouldn't mind giving it a shot. Thanks, it's a good idea.
Just a reminder to those who have entered (you're still more than welcome to enter if you haven't) that the first round of the trivia quiz begins tomorrow!
And as a teaser, the first round topic will be: Fantastic Firsts. :)
I'm in :)
I love trivia!
Count me in ;)
id be in too if i could connect :-X
im in :)
Alright, here we go! ;D
Just a quick reminder of a few rules and an update on one:
1. A set of 10 questions will be released each Monday, all related to a common theme.
(Updated Rule) 2. The questions will range in difficulty, therefore the easy questions will be worth 1pt, the medium questions worth 2pts, hard 3pts, and the super-hard question is worth 5pts. You wont get any points for a wrong answer.
3. Your answers must be messaged to me (don't post the answers here) by 7pm Friday night!
4. In fairness to all, use your noodle and not Google. Obviously, this is impossible to enforce, so please play fair.
5. The answers, along with an updated ladder will be posted on Saturday. Players on equal points will be separated by whomever submits the earliest answers.
6. Have fun!
Here come the questions....

Well, round 1 has begun! Good luck to all of the entrants!
If the questions seem unreasonably hard or easy, don't worry. These questions are more of an indication to what level of trivia buffs we have in the competition. So, if many people struggle with the questions, I will reduce the difficulty for the following rounds.
Also, it's still not to late to enter! Just post below that you want in, submit (via PM) your answers and away you go!
I will enter caveman, but won't be able to answer many of those questions! :(

I wouldn't separate them, just more say if...
Coach A has 10 points, Coach B has 10 points and Coach C has 9 points...
It is fine saying Coach A and B are equal 1st. But Coach C should be 3rd, not 2nd :)

2. Once you submit your answers, I'll tell you how many you got right, but not the answers (just to keep the suspense)
3. There is no third change.

To those waiting for replys, you'll unfortunately have to wait another hour as I've exceeeded my hourly limit. :(
For Round 3, what would people like to see as the category?
Grand finals, that's my expertise.
Grand Finals, or just Finals would be interesting.
Or maybe records.
Close Calls?
Sub catgeroized
- Winning Goal after siren
- Winning goal just before siren
- Draws?
- Winning Points
etc etc
Grand Finals are good.
- Margins
- Etc etc etc
Coaches/Players Records.
Draft picks
What number x player was taken at
What year was x player drafted
Some of those would be good.
Great work C4

Not sure how easy that is to read!
Years = Number of years since they joined, until now or until they folded. Up to 2010. Yes, some clubs missed years because of Wars and what not, but honestly can't be bothered looking that up.
So, depending on when you define the "Brisbane Lions" as starting, it is either the Brisbane Lions, or Carlton/Essendon
Nice stats ossie

A. Essendon and Hawthorn B. Essendon and Carlton C. Carlton and Richmond D. Carlton and Collingwood
Answer: D. Carlton and Collingwood.
Question 3. In 2007, Port Adelaide suffered the greatest Grand Final loss in AFL/VFL history against whom? Bonus Point: What was the margin?
Answer: Geelong defeated Port Adelaide by 119 points.
Question 4. What is the lowest recorded score in AFL/VFL history?
Answer: In the Sectional Finals (back then the eight competing teams were placed in 2 groups of 4 and played a round-robin tournament to help determine who'd playoff in the Grand Final) of 1899, St. Kilda scored only a single behind (0.1.1) against Geelong. Amazingly, that behind was the first score of the game. :-\
Medium Questions (worth 2 points)
Question 5a. Name the player whom recorded the highest individual DT score ever in a VFL/AFL match. (Since records began in 1993)
Answer: In Round 17, 1996 against Melbourne, Wayne Carey scored 209 Dream Team points in a single game. Prior to 1993 though, Jason Dunstall holds the record at 243!
Question 5b. Name the player whom recorded the highest individual SC score ever in an AFL match. (Since records began in 2005)
Answer: The answer is not in fact Ablett, but Jonathan Brown who scored a lazy 262 points in Round 7, 2006 against Hawthorn.
Question 6. Which played has amassed the greatest amount of Brownlow votes without ever winning a Brownlow?
A. Leigh Matthews B. Scott West C. Peter Matera D. Brent Harvey

Question 7. True or False: In 1997, Tony Lockett only kicked 34 goals for the whole season yet still won the club's leading goalkicker award.
Answer: True. Hard to think that the great Tony Lockett only registered 34 goals in a season. Injuries kept him out of most of the 1997 season, which is the reason for such a low tally. Lewis Dale came in second on 28.
Hard Questions (worth 3pts)

Super-Hard Question (worth 5 points)
Question 10. Who was the shortest player ever to play AFL/VFL football?

Wasn't too hard :P
I made the super-hard question easier for this week, just to see how people fared on it.
I did think last week was a little too difficult, hence why this weeks questions are a little easier... ;)
I've got a great idea for next weeks round. It'll definitely be challenging and should separate most of the contestants. :D
Feeling good.
that went really badly.. literally, guessed nearly all of them... felt 'ok' about brownlows but that's it lol.
8) another good week... They were a lot easier though so I doubt I'll be alone this week :-X
the only question a i guessed was the last one, couldn't get the bonus point though for naming the triple brownlow medalists
Think I did pretty bad :(

Just letting everyone know that the quiz questions for Round 3 will be up by noon tomorrow.
Also, the category for the round....
....Greats of the Game.
So you went with my suggestion of questions relating to the most successful club of the past 50 years as measured by grand final wins. ;D
Why are you on here? Shouldn't you be out, enjoying your holidays? lol ::)
I was at a bar, checking a few emails on my phone with the free WiFi whilst enjoying the sights on the beach at Rio at midday and a few local brews 8)
Hi all,
Just thought I'd give you an update on the week so far...
Highest Score: 25 out of 25!! :o What's even more amazing is that more than one person has scored that this week!
Lowest Score: 8 out of 25. :(
Quite a few people answered the Super-Hard Question correctly this week, which means I'll definitely be upping the ante next week!
and i think i did alright with my score ::) :P
Well I did pretty well, but didn't get any of the bonus points cos I had no clue who had won 3 brownlows haha

Answer: Wayne "The King" Carey.
Question 3. Which Essendon full-forward controversially won the 2007 Goal of the Year by just back-heeling the ball through the goals from just 3 metres out?

Hello everyone! Ready for Round 4? :D
Well Round 4 has a different twist this week. We're moving away from the questions just for the week, for a little bit more of a challenge.
This week is called, "
The Super Happy Fun Mix n' Match Time Quiz Round Spectacular".
There will be
5 challenges this week. In each challenge, you will be required to match the club/name/year etc to its correct answer. For example, if the question was to match the following clubs to their names:
1. Brisbane | A. Power |
2. Essendon | B. Lions |
3. Hawthorn | C. Eagles |
4. Port Adelaide | D. Bombers |
5. West Coast | E. Hawks |
Now when PM'ing me your answers, you're response should look something like this:
Test Challenge: 1 and B, 2 and D, 3 and E, 4 and A, 5 and C.
Understand? Good. There are going to
5 challenges like the one above than range in difficulty;
each with 10 options. The points are a little bit more complicated this week as well and I'll run through them now.
Each challenge is worth an '
X' amount of points. For every correct pairing, you will recieve
10% of the total points up for grab from that challenge.
For example, Challenge 2 is worth 4 points. If you only get 6 correct pairings, then you'll only receive 2.4 points. (60% of 4)
I'll then add the totals together and that will form your total score for the week. I won't be rounding scores up or down, it can become a little unfair and it'll help separate the leaderboard ;)
With all that explained, I guess it's time to get underway....
Round 4: The Super Happy Fun Mix n' Match Time Quiz Round SpectacularChallenge 1: Mascot Manor (worth a total of 2 points)In 2003, the AFL decided to give each club's mascot a name (I'd hate meet the person who came up with them). ::)

Challenge 4: From Humble Origins... (worth a total of 10 points)Some players aren't a one-club man. They might get homesick, sick of the club or the club gets sick of them. ;D
Your task is to match the player with the club they originally played for.

5. Geelong E. Mayblooms
6. Hawthorn F. Butchers
7. Melbourne G. Pivotonians
8. North Melbourne H. Tricolors
9. St. Kilda I. Foreign Legion
10. South Melbourne/Sydney J. Bluebirds
I note Collingwood isn't on the list. Lack of pride!
Do you know what Collingwood was once called...
...the Flatties.
It's a stupid reason to call a team this, but it was because the suburb of Collingwood was (and still is) flat. :P I could have also put in, "The Wobbles", "The Team Everyone Loves to Hate" etc. ;D
Collingwood were featured in 4 other questions. Consider yourself lucky they featured in 1. ;)
Apart frm the last challenge it wasn't too hard :D I only know what the bombers used to be called and a few others :-\

+1.
I was able to get like 5 or 6 of the last one but other than that I just guessed :-[
Last one was hard, the rest pretty easy (touch wood).
A few guesses at the end, think I got at least 5 right though.
Did not have a single clue for any of the previous names! Everyone was a guess haha!
The last one was my favourite. Because of that, here's some more useless facts about team names.
The Brisbane Bears were going to be called the Brisbane Koalas. Aww, aren't they cute? You can understand why they changed it.
The Adelaide Crows could have been named the Adelaide Sharks. They went with the Crows as a reference to South Australia being known as Croweaters in State of Origin.
Carlton Blues attempted to move away from the Navy Blues and introduce an animal to the name by calling themselves, the Carlton Cockatoos. It didn't last long at all.
The Fremantle Dockers could have been called the Fremantle Cobras. Apparently one of the reasons they went for the Docker was because it sounded like The Fremantle Doctor.... ???
And my personal favourite...
...One of the names that came up for serious consideration for Port Adelaide was...The Pirates. ;D ;D
Still waiting for my results :P.
And me :P
me too!
i can imagine it would take a really long time to go through the answers and i just sent mine in.
is it looking like I came last... again,...? :P
Hi everyone! Round 4 is now closed.
While I'm typing up the answers, here's some interesting facts about the current round:
Two people share the highest score for the week with 48/50 correct pairings and 34.8 points.
Everyone managed to correctly pair at least one option in Challenge 5.
I thought we had until lock out..the boys just reminded me :(
Pirates would have been better than Power. More fitting as well -- Taking money from the AFL.

wow cant believe i got so many the first 2 were easy ( i read some mascot manor cartoon when i was young), I only knew about 6-7 for question 3 but must have guessed the rest correct. question 4 i took educated guesses on about half of them. Question 5 i only knew 5 and guessed the rest.
I think i was very lucky this time. If they were all questions i.e which team were the gorillas i would have be gone.
I got 12 :'(

Your task is to match the player with the club they originally played for.
1. Leigh Brown | H. Fremantle (played 63 games for Freo before being traded to North Melbourne in 2003 for pick 13) |
2. Nathan Buckley | D. Brisbane Bears (played 20 games with Brisbane before being traded to Collingwood in 1994 for Craig Starcevich, Troy Lehmann and pick 12) |
3. Shannon Grant | I. Sydney (played 58 games for Sydney before being traded to North Melbourne in 1998 for Wayne Schwass and pick 27) |

5. Barry Hall | J. St. Kilda (played 88 games before being traded to Sydney in 2002 for picks 13, 17 and 45) |
6. Fraser Gehrig | C. West Coast (played 115 games for the Eagles before being traded to St. Kilda in 2001 for David Sierakowski and pick 18) |
7. Gary Ablett Snr. | A. Hawthorn (managed 6 games for Hawthorn before being traded to Geelong in 1984 for $60,000) |
8. Chris Tarrant | G. Collingwood (played 161 games at Collingwood before being to Fremantle in 2007 for Paul Medhurst and pick 8 ) |
9. Martin Pike | F. Melbourne (played 24 games for Melbourne before being picked up by Fiztroy) |
10. Brad Ottens | E. Richmond (played 129 games for Richmond before being traded to Geelong in 2005 for picks 12 and 16) |
Couple of interesting facts relating to this question
- Leigh Brown is also one of two players in VFL/AFL history to have played more than 50 games with three different clubs. :o
- Nathan Buckley almost boycotted the 1992 Draft because he didn't want to be drafted to Brisbane. Obviously Brisbane drafted him, but what makes this even stranger...as part of his contract between him and the Bears allowed him to go to the club of his choice the following season. :o
- Martin Pike also played for North Melbourne and Brisbane, making him one of a few players to play for 4 different clubs.
Challenge 5: Carn the Pivotonians? :o (worth a massive 16 points!)Thoughout a club's history, they'll change logos, change guernsey designs and change nicknames.
For your final and hardest challenge, match the club to a nickname they were once called.
1. Carlton | F. Butchers (In its early days, Carlton wore very tight fitting jackets that resembled butchers) |
2. Essendon | D. Same Olds (there's a couple reasons for this, one was because of Essendon's "Same Old" guernsey) |
3. Fitzroy | A. Gorillas (from 1939-1957 they were the Fitzroy Gorillas before the Lion was adopted) |
4. Footscray/Western Bulldogs | H. Tricolors (this was because of the three coloured guernsey they wore, well, still do) |
5. Geelong | G. Pivotonians (The town of Geelong was also known as the "Pivot". If you were from Geelong you were known as a "Pivotonian". The club adopted the name up until the Cats was introduced in the mid 1920s) |
6. Hawthorn | E. Mayblooms (The Maybloom is a brown and gold flower which grew in the local area. They became the Hawks in 1943) |
7. Melbourne | C. Fuchsias (Another flower reference. The caps Melbourne used to wear resembled the same colour) |
8. North Melbourne | J. Bluebirds (Prior to the Roos, they were known (not for long) as the Bluebirds due to guernsey colour) |
9. St. Kilda | B. Penguins (Throughout the clubs history, they've tried to provide a more aggressive emblem than the Saint. The Penguin was one option) |
10. South Melbourne/Sydney | I. Foreign Legion (Back in the 30s, South Melbourne recruited an unprecedented amount of interstate players and were dubbed the Foreign Legion) |
Another few interesting facts:
- Rumor has it, the Cats got their name due to a black cat that wandered into the opposing team's huddle during the game. Geelong won that match and quite a few afterwards. Jokes were made about the cat and the name just grew from there.
- St. Kilda also tried the Seagulls and the Panthers... ???
- Legend has it, Melbourne got their Demon name from a speech that the coach at the time, Frank Hughes gave. "You are playing like a lot of flowers (Fuschias). Lift your heads and play like demons!".
Well there you go! Phew, what a great week.
I'm going to take a quick break for lunch, then I'll post the new leaderboard. I love suspense, don't you? ;)

Question 7. In 2006, who became the first and only player to win the Michael Tuck Medal in a losing side?
A. Cameron Mooney B. Joel Corey C. Simon Goodwin D. Bernie Vince

Hard Questions (worth 3pts)
Question 8. True or False. John Nicholls has won the most John Nicholls Medals.
Answer: This was a trick question. John Nicholls has never won a John Nicholls Medal. He has however, won the most Robert Reynolds Trophies. Carlton's best and fairest Medal changed names in 2003.
So the answer is false.
Question 9. Who was the last player to win both the AFL Goal and Mark of the Year in the same year?
A. Matthew Lloyd B. Peter Bosustow C. Tony Modra D. Michael Mitchell
Answer: Whilst most of you said Tony Modra, he never won it in the same year. The answer is in fact Michael Mitchell, who won both awards in 1990. Peter Bosustow also won both awards in 1981; the first player to do so.
For those wondering, Tony Modra won the Mark of the Year in 1993, 1997 and 2000 and Goal of the Year in 1995.
The Impossible Question (worth 10 points)
Question 10. Who was won the most Robert Rose Awards? ???
Answer: The Robert Rose award is awarded by the AFL Players Association to the most courageous player in the competition for the year. It's been awarded annually since 1991.
The player that has won it a record 6 times is North Melbourne's Glenn Archer. Sydney's Paul Kelly is second with 5 times. Luke Hodge won the award last year.
Ah so the trick question was the 5th question I got right. A big whopping 10 points for me!

Just 4 points separate 4th and 7th place!! :o
Congratulations again to
BOOMZ ::) who has won another week of trivia with 25 points, including Question 10.
hawk_88 also gets an honorable mention for also getting the "Impossible" Question correct. Seems I was wrong.
Come back here Monday for another round of trivia! :D
Boomz are you sure you don't use google? No one can know this much about football!!
Hmm.... marking of Question 8 is a bit suspect.
It is a matter of whether the name is critical or the award itself.
Under the "trick" logic, you could argue that Matthew Lloyd in fact has scored very few goals at Etihad Stadium yet still holds the record for Telstra Dome....
SHOWERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR forgot to do it this week ::)
hmm i realised the medal name was changed but in my opinion even though it did change i think he has won the medal the most times. Becasue when people talk about who has been the greatest afl player of all time, or which teams have won the most afl premierships people still bring up players like barry cable.
no big deal but questions like this really annoy me in exams. You know the right answer its more to do with intepretation.
Jeez, where has the time gone!! :o
It's seriously hard to believe it's already Monday! Wow...
Anyway, here are your questions for the week....good luck!!

Hey all,
Don't forget to your entries in!
I'll be going out later tonight, so I'll extend the deadline to MIDNIGHT tonight.
Hello everyone,
Sorry I haven't been able to give you last weeks answers, nor this weeks questions. I've been quite ill with the flu and haven't fully recovered.
So sadly, there will be no questions this week and I'll deliver the answers for last weeks questions hopefully by Thursday when I'm feeling ~80% match-fit. :P
Sorry for any inconvenience.
c4
That's ok C4. As long as you get well soon. :)
No problems. As long as I get a perfect score *shifty eyes*
Get well soon!
Given that C4 is currently out of action (get well soon!) I am putting up a once off quiz that in no way contributes to your overall score, but should be fun and really test everyone's footy knowledge.
The topic is weird and wonderful guernseys from AFL/VFL history. Each of the following 8 guernseys have been worn at least once in an official AFL/VFL sanctioned match. This can include pre-season matches and exhibition matches. To enter, simply name the club that wore the following guernseys and PM me your answers.
1 point per answer. Careful, some of these are very tricky, but some may be simpler than they appear

...the final round! :D
And that round will be all about...
...GRAND FINALS! :o
Nice to see you back c4 :)
I had been wondering what was going on ;)
I totally forgot about the guernsey quiz, mainly because only CrowsFan entered. For the record he got 6 out of the 8 correct. For comparison I personally gave the quiz to our resident quiz master C4 and he got 5 so well done!
1. St Kilda (they changed the from yellow to white during WW1 as their colours matched the German flag)
2. University (for those who don't know of this team, you should read into AFL history)
3. Carlton (interestingly on the back of the guernsey there was a union jack)
4. West Coast, but will accept WA (technically this was worn in a heritage round by the West Coast as it was the WA state of origin guernsey)
5. Fremantle (was worn in a heritage round, was South Fremantle's guernsey in the WAFL)
6. Port Adelaide (worn in a heritage round, and old guernsey of the Magpies which is where the teal came from when Port's colours were selected)
7. Hawthorn (well done if you got this one. A very old Hawthorn guernsey before they were the Hawks. Was worn recently in a heritage round)
8. Fitzroy (should be obvious)
Yay I won a quiz round :D
I don't care that only 2 people entered :P
A big THANK YOU to hawk_88 for his guernsey trivia. The answers to the Round 10 trivia will be up momentarily.
Little disappointed no-one but CrowsFan entered. ???
Well I suck at AFL Trivia so only enter the easy rounds :P. Which has only been 2 so far that I've seen ;D.

Question 10. How many sets of brothers are currently playing in the AFL?
Answer: Believe it or not, there are 22. Yep, 22.
Here's the list: Gary and Nathan Ablett, Claye and Dayne Beams, Nathan and Mitchell Brown, Xavier and Raphael Clarke, Chad and Kane Cornes, Aaron and Alwyn Davey, Cameron and Luke Delaney, Jack and Dylan Grimes, Ed and Nick Lower, Jarrad and Mark McVeigh, Kelvin and Andrew Moore, Cale, Jarryd and Mitch Morton, Marlon and Daniel Motlop, Sam and Ben Reid, Adam, Scott and Joel Selwood, Rhyce and Heath Shaw, Andrew and David Swallow, Robbie and Chris Tarrant, Joel and Kurt Tippett, Jay and Nathan Van Berlo, Robert and Matthew Warnock, Justin and Matthew Westhoff.
For those that will argue that some of those players (Ed Lower and Cameron Delaney for example) haven't yet played this year, therefore they shouldn't be included...I was just after brothers on current senior playing lists.
Ah so close with the last question! Missed out on Nathan and Mitch Brown (such a common surname didn't think they were brothers), Kelvin and Andrew Moore (don't even know who Kelvin is), and Robert and Matthew Warnock :(

Surely Nathan and Mitch were a giveaway as they were mentioned in the "most collective games played by twins" question. Kelvin Moore plays for Richmond, again didnt play for them this year, but is still on their senior playing list.
Also, just so everyone knows, CrowsFan was the closest to the actual answer so I gave him the 5 points. You were very close indeed. :D

Your lyrics are:
'Cause there's one day in September we want to remember.
There isn't any doubting we'll be in there shouting.
Football's such a part of this whole town,
And we know that you won't let us down.
Wow, what a final round!
There's a infinite amount of points up for grab! ;D
Good luck!
Hooray another round :D

As this year's Grand Final will be held in the first week of October, the song, "One Day in September" by Mike Brady kinda doesn't work this year. So your challenge is to re-write part of the song. The 5 best lyrics (as chosen by me) will receive points. The best will receive 5, 2nd best = 4 etc.
Your lyrics are:
'Cause there's one day in September we want to remember.
There isn't any doubting we'll be in there shouting.
Football's such a part of this whole town,
And we know that you won't let us down.
Answer: CrowsFan wins this challenge with his effort:
'Cause there's one day in October when no-one is sober.
As the crowd begins to cheer, men down an Aussie beer.
The footy and beer go hand in hand,
Shouting wildly from the main grand stand.
Well there are the answers...
...give me about an hour and I should have the final leaderboard up!!
Always knew I should be a song writer haha ;D

A bigger coincidence would be if they both finished on 201.1 ;)
Do I win her?
We came into the finals as underdogs and full credit has to go to the boys for the effort on the day...
Wait, you can't have a draw, we need to come back next week ;)
200.8 is a lucky set of numbers for a Hawthorn fan :)
Well hawk_88, if you don't want a draw...
then BOOMZ would be the winner as he won the most weekly rounds. He'd also win the girl. ;D
Still want a draw? ;)
No such thing as count-back in AFL... has to be another quiz :P
woooot :P Did I actually do the last round? :-X I don't remember those questions lol
Knew there had to be some reason I caught up to you :)
