After Round 17

It was a mad stampede, but now, the dust has settled. How did it all land?

Buenos Aires minor premiers? Tick, we knew that (despite losing).

Seoul's TIE was crucial for them! If they scored just 1 less point, they would be travelling to Rome next week - instead, the Gladiators will come to South Korea, which could be the difference!

Rio is singing the praises of Cape Town for taking down the Wolves, and they'll keep its spot in the top 4 despite losing to the Tigers. That's right, it's RHYTHM CUP TIME! PLAY THOSE DRUMS JAGS!

It almost seems wrong that the Wolves won't have a double chance, but they might not need it. They'll start its campaign at Rogers centre next week, and I'll back them to respond to its poor performance against the Cobras.

The Suns banked on its good work before the final 3 'cluster' rounds and its subsequent losses, and will deservedly host an elimination final next week.

The Cobras flirted with disaster against Toronto, but it's clutch victory (and 7th in row) gives them a well deserved spot in finals!

And of the 4 teams hotly contesting the final spot... it was NEW DELHI that wins it! A mammoth 150+ score and victory against Rio was a worthy entry to finals, beating out the desperate attempts from Pacific (beating Buenos Aires), PNL (beating Mexico City) and Beijing (scoring 140). Heartbreak for all 3 of these teams!

Of the bottom 8, there was only 1 movement... Berlin from 15th to 14th, to dodge the shame of a bottom 4 placing ;)

Despite its best efforts, Christchurch avoids the spoon, and Cairo too... meaning Dublin will receives its 2nd wooden spoon, and first since the inaugural 2012 season. But we all know what happened in the years after that!

Christchurch sit atop of the ladder, in what COULD be a club first!

Berlin in the top 4, where it belongs.

Buenos Aires at 5th will be its lowest position for the year.

Pacific at 16th is a blast from the deep past.

Dublin... hopefully will see some reprieve from 18th this year.

After Round 2

Many movements this week! Some are no doubt permanent corrections for the season ahead. The first of which is Buenos Aires to top spot, where I don't think they'll move from until maybe finals.

Seoul #2 is also a familiar sight for many, and Toronto #4 is no stranger to the top of the ladder too. Berlin, obviously, too. These are our only undefeated teams, after just two rounds!

On the other end, Dublin's close loss actually sees it move two places up, moving ahead of arch rival Mexico City! Now that is a sight.

Cairo, though, assumes the atlas position and holds the World XVs on its shoulders.

Wolves move to 3rd, Rome to 4th, whilst Berlin hang on to 8th, and New Delhi and the Reindeers tumble to 9th and 10th.

After Round 5

And then there were two (undefeated teams)!

It was a scary 2 weeks, but Buenos Aires have reclaimed the throne thanks to it's % boosting victory over Dublin, and for PNL's crucial upset win over the previously undefeated Magpies, who drop only to 3rd. Toronto have been strong so far this year, and perhaps would have been a surprise to many at the start of the season to be 5-0.

The Cobras take a tumble from 6th to 9th, but remain a crucial game clear of 10th.

Trouble for the Islanders whom are now % and 2 games behind the top 8.

A ladder changing round as predicted! Seoul claimed Toronto and their #2 spot in the same week, leaving Buenos Aires the only undefeated team so far in 2023.

Rio's slip against Cape Town sees them drop to 7th, whilst Mexico City's big win over Pacific jumps them from 12th to 9th, and well and truly back in the hunt!

After Round 8

A lot of close results this week with big ladder ramifications! Dillos slap down of Seoul sees them drop from 2nd to 4th, and now 1 game behind Toronto whom reclaim their #2 spot.

New Delhi's big performance leapfrogged them to 6th where Rio, despite winning, drop a spot but safeguard itself in the 8 for another week.

As mentioned it was a disappointing result for Cape Town, as they had the opportunity to be 2 games clear of 11th and equal the ledger with 6th, but now find themselves a game out of the 8.

After Round 9

An epic performance by Toronto keeps its 1 game advantage over 3rd, whilst pushing down Rome to 5th and a game outside the top 4

New Delhi's loss against the Suns has seen it tumble out of the 8! That same performance see Mexico City re-enter, Rio moves up a couple spots, and Tokyo holds on for dear life. That win would have really helped tho!

PNL and Pacific are officially back in the race only 1 game away from the 8, whilst the aforementioned Dublin now move to 15th.

These Cobras though are well and truly confuddled at 4-6 and 12th.

After Round 11

Some movement up the top! Rome's dominant performance over Seoul has shot from 5th to 3rd, whilst taking Seoul down from 2nd to 4th. Toronto takes residence at 2nd, whilst Beijing's shock loss against Cairo sees them slip to 5th, and unfortunately for them, behind Seoul and Rome as EurAsia compatriots, whom will be those (if they choose) to lead 1 EurAsian side each going into the rep rounds in 2 weeks time.

Meanwhile, Buenos Aires and Toronto will suit-up against for AAP, if they choose to do so.

Pacific continue its revival going from 11th to 9th, whilst Cairo's big win sees them ascend from the bottom... condemning London to a possible wooden spoon by Pick 1-less fate.

After Round 12

If it bleeds, we can kill it.

Buenos Aires' first loss of the season does nothing to its claim on top spot however, still with a very comfortable 2 game advantage of 2nd. Seoul's miserly win takes it back up to 3rd, whilst Rome's shock loss to London has them kicked out of the top 4!

Mexico City I believe take up residence in the top 4 for the first time this year too.

Rio's CLUTCH victory against Buenos Aires now have them a game clear in the 8, thanks to Tokyo's victory keeping New Delhi at bay. The Samurai are right at the door of the 8 and will need to rely on losses to the charging Pacific and New Delhi if it to make finals from here. This could be likely, given Tokyo have a much more favourable draw compared to New Delhi and especially Pacific.

Meanwhile, the Harley Reid intrigue contines, with London's victory now leaving Cairo stranded on the bottom with 1 win for the year. Berlin now 'distances' itself from the conversation now a game clear from 16th, but the final 3 rounds of the season has BIG potential to completely change the mix-up of the bottom 4. Going to be very interesting to see how it plays out.

After Round 13

No movement in the Top 5, but plenty elsewhere!

Rio's win over Beijing was very important - as Rio now sit 6th a game clear of the now 7th Beijing. Beijing will find some comfort being a game clear of New Delhi at 8th, who would have been thrilled Pacific wasn't able to defeat London and overtake them. Alas, the Tigers loss against Buenos Aires has allowed PNL and CAPE TOWN to catch-up, whom along with Pacific are only separated by New Delhi's superior percentage! It was once MUCH more superior, but the Dillos have done damage posting the WXVs highest score of 2023 against them.

I fear Tokyo's chances have dwindled with 4 games to go. They'll need to win EVERY match I reckon, and hope for a bit of luck.

The bottom 6 are definitely decided however, with only a win to London among us. Cairo's wooden spoon chances shortened in the process, despite it's uptick in form.

After Round 14

Toronto, Seoul and Mexico City ALL went 150+ and now ALL move 1 win behind Buenos Aires! Yes, the Dillos have superior %, but that too will be tested in the final 3 'cluster' rounds of the season.

The beneficiary of that? Rio. Their clutch win over Rome puts them in pole position to replace whomever of the top 4 drops out, and they have a softer remaining draw compared to Mexico City and Buenos Aires.

Despite beating Dublin, New Delhi have dropped THREE places, from 8th to 11th, such was the impressive performances of Pacific, PNL and Cape Town! The Islanders have finally forced their way back into the 8, but being a 'tier 1' team alongside PNL, face a tough final 3 weeks. Cape Town do not have such a problem, facing 3 'tier 3' games to end the season. Suffice to say, I think Pacific and PNL are up against it!

And lastly - Tokyo. They're still mathematically a chance, increased by the fact they play 3 'tier 3' teams, but they'll need a lot to go right.

And dead lastly - the race for the spoon is going to be VERY interesting, with ALL of Cairo, Dublin, London, Berlin and Christchurch facing off against each other in some form or another in the last 3 weeks. The spoon could be ANYONES!

After Round 15

Toronto's loss to Rio will impact Week 1 of finals greatly I suspect. It has allowed Seoul to climb into 2nd spot, 1 game clear of Toronto whom now share its 11-4 record with Rio and fellow R15 'loser' Mexico City.

Rome will blow them all away on % (except Toronto) if they slip up in the next 2 weeks and would be desperate to secure its well deserved top 4 spot.

Beijing's clutch victory over Mexico City sees it survives in 7th, and a game clear of the now 8TH PLACED CAPE TOWN! What a charge it has been for the South African team.

PNL are screaming that it should be them! Pacific drops out having been 'Romed' and New Delhi sits farther back at 11th, but still a chance.

Meanwhile, at the Harley Reid cup...

Berlin and London's victories pretty much sees them safe from the wooden spoon, but the Royals victory over Christchurch actually sees them as a genuine shot at finishing last!

Cairo's 200pt victory over Dublin wasn't quite enough to bridge the % gap, but it does mean both teams are just 1 game behind the Saints and both have great opportunities to win in the next two weeks.

After Round 16

Losses to 2nd, 3rd, 4th? It must be a cluster round!

It also means... CONGRATULATIONS TO BUENOS AIRES for winning back-to-back minor premierships! This and last year have been remarkably similar, going undefeated in the first half of the season with scoring tapering off towards the end, but the Dillos are a supremely consistent and credentialed team and a deserving winner of the title.

They're also with Seoul as the only teams to win the minor premiership and flag! Will that history repeat itself too?

Meanwhile... CARNAGE in the top 8! Seoul holds onto its 2nd position, but Toronto AND Mexico City tumbles out of the top 4, displaced by the deserving Rio and Rome. They'll have to hope results fall their way in order to sneak back in next week.

Beijing's lost... but STILL hang onto the 8, whilst Cape Town's clutch victory now sees it 1 game clear in the 8... but technically could still miss out on finals if they lose next week against Toronto.

Pacific's victory over PNL was huge - setting themselves up for one last charge and sneak into the 8 after the last round. That game will be the 2022 Grand Final rematch against Buenos Aires, and it'd be oh so sweet to get one back on them and qualify for August!

New Delhi is only a whisker behind Pacific on %, thanks to its big win against Toronto. and will likely need to beat Rio next week in order to make it. Although, it is possible for them to lose... AND move from 10th to 8th, so you never know!

Speaking of hypotheticals... it's not over for PNL. 1) They must beat Mexico City next week. 2) Beijing must get comprehensively beaten by Rome... which could happen. 3) Pacific must get soundly beaten by Buenos Aires... also could happen. and 4) New Delhi just needs to get beaten by a little bit against Toronto. WHICH COULD HAPPEN! It's all feasible, so don't lose hope!

London's victory over Berlin sees it move from 15th to 13th, and mathematically impossible to win the spoon.

Berlin and New York also will escape the spoon... leaving the 'Harley Reid Cup' down to Cairo, Dublin and Christchurch! Cairo clearly don't want it - winning back to back games to elevate itself off the bottom! Whoo!

Christchurch's % is probably too good for it receive the spoon, but it's possible. It's most likely Dublin will win it... but to avoid, will need to beat Berlin (impossible) next week, and Cairo to lose to London... or for Christchurch to get BELTED by Tokyo, and I mean belted.

So much uncertainty in the ladder going into the last round! GET ABOUT IT!
