what is the best strategy when picking your team. gnr?
Don't particularly want pure batsmen who are outside the top 4 in their sides. Just to give you an idea of who this will likely be to open the tournament.
Strikers: Carey, Weatherald, Ingram, Wells
Heat: McCullum, Heazlett, Lynn, Burns
Hurricanes: Wade, ? (maybe Doolan, maybe Jewell, maybe who knows), McDermott, Bailey
Stars: Dunk, Stoinis? (could opt for Dean), Maddinson, Maxwell
Renegades: Harris, Ludeman, White, Cooper/DC
Scorchers: Klinger, Inglis?, Cartwright, Turner (assuming both Marsh's on intl. duty)
Sixers: Denly, Hughes, Henriques, ?*
Thunder: Buttler, Patterson, Watson, Root
Sixers still have a lot of squad spots to fill, as do the Hurricanes, Stars & Thunder, so there's a few asteriks & guess work in there.
Guys like Bravo (if signed) & the Scorchers AR's (& potentially Stoinis) provide great value because they both bowl & bat inside the top 4, that's what you're looking for. Guys like Denly, Ingram, Burns etc. are also known to occasionally roll the arm over from time to time.
When it comes to other bowlers, guys who bat slightly higher are handy because they can occasionally pick up the odd 15-20 score (Rashid Khan, Nair, Cutting) etc. but it's still mainly about the wickets.
After looking at the bye/DG split I'm thinking they aren't going to be as big a deal this year
The 5 game rounds really smooth the fixture out
Five of the rounds have no byes and rd 11 has 3 DG teams and only one bye team!

Nige & I have done our predicted best XI's for the upcoming season. PB may do so too if he has the time. You can also find the updated squads in that spreadsheet as well.
Some notes from my end
Adelaide - Head will miss with AU commitments, everyone should slide up a spot & likely Matt Short will come in at 6.
Brisbane - N/A
Hurricanes - Paine will miss with AU commitments. Expect Wade to open alongside Short & Doran (at present) to come in down the order. The Canes did also use Milenko as a straight bat last season so that is also possible.
Renegades - Who opens alongside Ludeman with both openers gone with AU commitments? Money is on Bear but it leaves a weakened batting lineup behind it. Expect lesser lights such as Harvey, Webster & Sutherland to play some part as the season starts. Tremain should also miss with AU commitments but they're well stocked in that regard. Boyce will come in if they want 2 spinners, Mennie if they want a seamer.
Stars - Handscomb will miss with AU duties so expect Dunk to take the gloves. The Stars are in a good spot when it comes to flexibility, as Handscomb's replacement could be anyone from Worrall (Gotch going up to 6), Dean (Stoinis going down to 6 & Dean opening) to even Evan Gulbis. Hard to make a call there.
Scorchers - Absolutely stacked squad. Both Marsh brothers should miss & their lineup could be one of a number of options. Based on what happened last season it'll be either Whiteman or Willey opening with Klinger, with the other being somewhere in the 6-8 region. Bancroft will come straight back into #3 on his return (Dec 30th). The fact that Paris & Matt Kelly don't make this XI is bonkers. Qadir will also be handy for pitches such as Etihad.
Sixers - Lyon replaced by likely Pope. Also feel the Sixers batting depth is a touch weak, so I'd expect a Jordan Silk re-signing in the next few days to bat 5 ahead of Edwards.
Thunder - Cummins & Khawaja will miss with the test team. Patterson will open alongisde Watson with Ryan Gibson the likely replacement at 6. Although Sangha may be a shout if Watto has had enough of Green being a flat out meme. Ahmed will come in for Cummins, with everyone shifting one spot up the order with Ahmed at 11.
I echo a lot of what Coop said and I'll probably go into more details in the coming days with my own thoughts so stay tuned.
Just started to consider the draw and Scorchers and Heat have the double in Rd 1. Lynn C probably a certainty for me.
My team as it stands at the moment. Reserves may change though to balance.

Scorchers are really tough to pick, feel like one of Tye, NCN, Dorf and Richardson could miss with Willey and MMarsh in the team, which is crazy considering they've all played for the national side. On paper it should be Richo but they really like his pace.
Feel like Qadir won't get many chances if Agar is available. Turner has started to bowl so he is the 2nd spin option
Whiteman is really out of favour so I think Inglis will keep until Bancroft returns
Will be one top line batsman short for the two games before Bancroft is back (Assuming Smarsh stays in the Aus XI :) )
My stab and a game 1 XI is below:
Michael KLINGER
David WILLEY
Hilton CARTWRIGHT
Mitch MARSH
Ashton TURNER
Ashton AGAR
Nathan COULTER-NILE
Josh INGLIS (wk)
Jhye RICHARDSON
Andrew TYE
Jason BEHRENDORFF
Ridiculous bowling fire power, 6 Front liners plus Marsh and Turner (Cartwright bowled 1 over last season so he doesn't count)
Agar at 6 might seem a bit weak but there isn't another batsman available. Will look so much stronger come the 3rd game when Bancroft replaces Inglis
Would love to see Voges throw NCN in as an opener like the Gades did with Narine.
Best XI would be:
Michael KLINGER
Shaun MARSH
Hilton CARTWRIGHT
Mitch MARSH
Ashton TURNER
Cameron BANCROFT(wk)
David WILLEY
Ashton AGAR
Nathan COULTER-NILE
Andrew TYE
Jason BEHRENDORFF
Klinger/Cartwright out for Richardson if they wanted more bowling firepower.
Maddog got his arm broken by Jhye today so rip the messiah.
Means that one of Travis Dean or Jonathan Merlo probably comes in, maybe Evan Gulbis.
Dean's obviously a specialist batsman, whereas Merlo is an allrounder who can bowl pace.
League is full. :(

So it's official, RIP official BBL fantasy, looks like they've transitioned to a DraftStars/Moneyball format. Such a flowering shame. Had a fantastic layout, a booming playerbase and an actual decent mobile app. SuperCoach it is I guess. :(
Better start looking at my team :P
Really struggling to build a team that I'm 100% happy with here. But this is what I have so far, with reasoning.
BAT1 - D'Arcy Short - Very nearly went Bravo here as he's a personal favourite of mine, and one I've started every season possible with, but Short has to be picked, although purely as a defensive option. Was completely found out in the IPL by spin, but his domestic form speaks for itself. Has the capacity to burn me much more than Bravo does, so is here solely for that alone.
BAT2 - David Willey - Opening bowler for the Scorchers who is also a potential opening bat for them as well. Logical, safe choice.
BAT3 - Jofra Archer - Picks himself. 4 T20 MATCHES without a wicket in 2018 speaks for itself really.
BAT4 - Brendan McCullum - Hasn't been in brilliant form in 2018 and probably wouldn't have picked him if not for the DGW first up. Only 3 50's in a year of T20 competitions and likely becomes Wade or a Strikers bowler via DPP for GW2 & onward. Keeps my streak of starting with him every year too.
BAT5 - Colin Ingram - Adelaide bias shining through, but will bat first drop for the Strikers in Head's absence. Can bowl a bit & performed absolutely sublimely in England over their summer once again. Very obviously prefers slow & low wickets from both his BBL & English records, and where are two of his first 3 games? Metricon & Etihad. Has the DGW in Rd 2 so more than willing to punt that he does well against the Heat's shower bowling attack in Round 1.
WKP1 - Jos Buttler - Tried so hard to justify saving money here with an initial Wade pick, but I don't think you can ignore his 2018 form. Absolutely tore the last half of the IPL season to shreds, scoring 67, 51, 82, 95, 94 & 39 in his last 6 innings of the tournament. Been fantastic at international level too, having 2 centuries & a further 4 50+ scores so far in 2018.
BWL1 - Rashid Khan - Picks himself. Tore it up last year, tore up the IPL with 21 wickets at a 6.7 ER, took 10 in 4 games against Bangladesh and 7 in 2 against Ireland. Absolute no-brainer.
BWL2 - Andrew Tye - Gotta pick the guy who topped both the IPL (24 wickets at an 8 ER & 14 SR) and JLT OD (18 wickets in 6 games), don't you? White ball royalty at this point.
BWL3 - Jason Behrendorff - Remember this guy? He's finally fit again! Despite the fact that SC jacked up both his & NCN's prices despite their absence, I still think he's worth picking. Although you can't go wrong with either & NCN does bat higher....
BWL4 - Usman Khan Shinwari - This guy is going to cause A LOT of problems for batsman this summer, right-handers especially. Left-arm quick who gets movement & seam through the air not seen since probably Wasim. Took the 3rd fastest 5fa in ODI history (21 balls) against Sri Lanka. Like Mujeeb though, can't really bat. So expect him at 10 or 11.
BWL5 - Mujeeb Ur Rahman - The new Rashid. He's young, Afghani, and has been extremely economical to date. Had tidy figures in both the IPL & Vitality T20 blast. Probably doesn't possess the same tricks as Rashid, but will be very handy for the Heat nonetheless.
BAT6 - Max Bryant - Bryant is a stand and slog kinda operator, but they could favour him over Heazlett at the top given that's the dynamic of the Heat's top order, and has been for quite a few years. If Heazlett opens again, I'll probably work some magic to get him instead.
BAT7 - Jack Edwards - Have an inkling he may get games for the Sixers. Flexible spot for anyone who pops up late like Sams from last year.
WKP2 - Josh Philippe - Should bat in the top 4 for the Sixers. Won't take the gloves with Nevill in the team, but for 42k a top 4 bat is all you really want.
BWL6 - James Pattinson - LOCK - and should be fairly obvious why. Cheap, first choice seamer for the Heat, and should bat at 8. Bargain.
BWL7 - Sandeep Lamichhane - First choice spinner for the Stars. Haven't seen enough exposed form against quality opposition to start him with any confidence, but at 62k there are FAR worse bench options going around.
OTHER OPTIONS
Dwayne Bravo - Man.... I'm absolutely gutted I can't find room for him. Has become more of a bowler as his career has progressed into the twilight, but he can do both at ease with amazing quality. :'(
I've got the feeling that this is the breakout summer for Daniel Sams after what he produced in the JLT. Doesn't start due to other options, but is a very handy POD and will come into heavy consideration after the first few GW's. Arjun Nair likewise.
Shane Watson is continuing to do Shane Watson things. Solid option again who shouldn't do you wrong.
Travis Dean could be a bargain buy if he opens alongside Ben Dunk, who surely can't have as bad of a season as he did last year?
Billy Stanlake is also doing Billy Stanlake things, could start for me, but will definitely be in there come GW2. Splitting hairs between him & Ben Laughlin, who will probably also feature for me in GW2. Both had extremely solid IPL campaigns.
Matthew Wade is ridiculously close to starting for me. Will open for the Hurricanes alongside Short & is in fantastic Shield touch. Would save some much-needed cash as well so he is one I'm mulling over. Has the DGW in GW3.
Scott Boland is taking wickets for fun in the Shield, and could be a very interesting POD selection.
Joe Denly is in good touch with both bat & ball and had a really good backend to the summer last time out. Very likely to come in GW2 in preperation for GW3. Will 100% open for the Sixers.
Seems like I say this every year but Daniel Hughes is in fantastic nick in the Shield. Not sure I can do that again though with his strike rate.
Chris Lynn is still extremely suspect to spin, and with Rashid first up, I can't do it. One of those ones that has the potential to completely burn me however.
Joe Burns is in fantastic shield nick, and going Short to Bravo & Baz to Burns is an option I am considering. Would be in if I had one more spot.
Plenty more besides that, Cameron White will be solid as always. Jono Wells is an attractive bench option if he bats inside the top 4 in Head's absence. Hilton Cartwright is always an option batting in the top 4 despite his form. Alex Carey is Alex Carey.

All 3 are definitely opitions. Agar is certainly one I had in my team for a period of time but just felt there were better options in the end. However if he DOES open, he's coming straight in, no questions asked. His form with the ball hasn't been fantastic though and that's why I ended up booting him. Because if he doesn't take a few poles & bats 7... ehhhhh..
Klinger was in great English form, but I'm always apprehensive of picking batsman who dont bowl at least occasionally (Baz is the only one I'm starting that fits that currently), because if they get out cheaply, they're screwed for the game. However, at that price, you certainly have to consider him, absolutely. Probably an oversight on my part there if I'm really honest.
I hate Mitch Marsh for reasons outside the Big Bash, don't mind me there. :P I also think there's better DGW options for the price. Certainly a POD though.

I'd assume LOC and one of Valente/Short will drop out of that. If Valente starts he has to be a lock for us surely. 42k who has the DGW in week 2
Short will play over Valente since they've already got Neser, Stanlake, Siddle and Laughlin in the team and they all bowl pace. Rashid is the frontline spinner but Short might chip with an over or two here or there and he's a better bat/allrounder than Valente.

I'd assume LOC and one of Valente/Short will drop out of that. If Valente starts he has to be a lock for us surely. 42k who has the DGW in week 2

If one of Whiteman/Inglis misses it will have to be a bowler.
I want to say Qadir plays and one of the quicks misses but who do you drop from NCN/Dorf/Richo/Tye???
Cheers Skyarm 1/2 an hour ha ha not like footy you are going to be on the ball to do good at this comp ;D
So what’s a good score for players these days and with this new(ish) scoring formats? I remember when 50 points in Fantasy used to be massive but now blokes average upwards of 80. I still reckon a good score is around 60 odd
Good call on Mujeeb, Koop. Got 27 with the bat which is very handy. Hopefully can grab some wickets now.
@Money, Rashid Kahn is already on 105 and that could rise if he bats and gets runs.

Wow. Not Patterson or Gibson make that squad VERY interesting.
Did a bit of a google. Cook is a legspinner from Sydney grade cricket who was the MVP last season. Seems to be a handy late order hitter too.
If I had to take a stab at the team.

That's a long tail, and I'd actually suspect Nair MAY play as a specialist batsman, along with obviously Jason Sangha. Either way it's one too weak for my liking. I'd prefer Rainbird personally at 9 but McAndrew is actually close to an AR, so they may go for the extra batting prowess given the dynamic of that XI.
Apologies to those I said to that Sangha wouldn't be a first choice option. :-[

Pity with the DGW most would have picked him What are people doing with him keeoing him as he has cash to make or getting rid due to heat having 2 byes.
I am keeping on bench nice vc loophole.
Shocking start for me Willey as C scored 22 didn't bowl still has one more chance Turner scored 16 don't think he bowled but another chance , Watson 28 didn't bowl Butler 38 really didn't fire Neser and Cutting did bugger all Wildermuth my highest score 88 :'( team needs some changes.
Not alone there shaker but not quite as bad as I had Khan with his 129 to help. Hoping the DGW players Lyn(C), McCallum, Bryant, Willey, Agur and Turner do better with second chance. With Storms and Rain forecast will we even get a game at Metricon.
Trades considering for next week with Strikers with DGW,
Lyn to Carey
McCuillum to Weatherald
and depending on second game Turner to maybe Ingram.
Heat with byes for next 2 rounds hence the trades. Bryant and Pattinson on bench due to possible cash generation.
Anyone know what a decent score seems to be? Thought my 811 was alright as I only had 4 scored under 50 and I lost all 5 of my leagues.
Look at your position in relation to others and what % you are in to give an idea, I lost both leagues with 928 even though I was the 4th highest scorer in 1.
I won my match 743 to 742 ;D the two lowest scores Cutting saved my butt Willey my downfall scored 36 from 2 games as C what a spud choice and he lost a stack of cash >:(

I've got the feeling that this is the breakout summer for Daniel Sams after what he produced in the JLT. Doesn't start due to other options, but is a very handy POD and will come into heavy consideration after the first few GW's. Arjun Nair likewise.
Should've listened to myself. :-[
Last minute switch of Christian to Willey hasn’t worked out well for me so far

Ok what made you get rid of Christian he did well in R1 and Willey failed both games with the bat R1 and did not bowl , I got rid of him and got Carey who failed ;D
My last minute switch was shocking - Was all set on Willey to M Short (and had posted that in a couple of forums) and then decided to go Willey to Dorf as last trade. Will probably be my worst decision of the series. >:( >:(

Just looking through the league matches and it might be a blessing mate both the Strikers and Heat have a bye next round and the Dorf seems to be in good form ;)

Oh nah man I meant prior to round 1 starting for Willey’s double, wasnt a trade for round 2. Brought in Carey, Khan and Short this week for a few Heat boys
