The season is nearing its end, and the Destroyers remain brutal and resolute in their quest for back-to-back premierships. They have only lost their one guaranteed loss a year in London, and really not many other teams have even come close. In fact, only Pacific has lost to Dublin by a margin less than 100 SC points this year. The next closest margin is fascinatingly (but not surprisingly) Mexico City (12 WXV points) and then their current opponent in PNL (17 WXV points). So, if you think about it, opposition pressure as been foreign to Dublin since the loss against London in Round 8... what would happen if PNL was to stick with them throughout the match? How would the Destroyers handle the pressure? We honestly don't know! Regardless, Dublin has been head and shoulders above the rest of the competition for the entire year and as such, go into this match as overwhelming favourites. In fact, they haven't dipped below 160 since bloomin Round 12! | (http://www.afldreamers.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Goldstein.jpg) |
(http://s.afl.com.au/staticfile/AFL%20Tenant/Media/Images/275752-tlsnewsportrait.jpg) | The Reindeers last week celebrated their first ever finals victory in possibly the worst final WXVs has ever produced. Not only did PNL score its second worst score of the season, its opponent in Berlin scored its worst of the season too. The Reindeers would consider that encounter as dodging a bullet, but would be dead set proud of its defence keeping the 4th highest scoring team to its second sub 130 score of the season. That defence needs to come to fore once again, and they need to be a lot better too as the face the highest scoring team of the season by quite a margin. The Reindeers would be hoping to welcome back some depth players missing in last weeks encounter with Berlin, but have already lost arguably the best defender of the year in Luke Hodge through an un-ignorable club suspension, for bumping team-mate Chad Wingard's head into a goal post! If you believed in bad omens... then you'd place your life savings on Dublin. Interestingly though, the ledger is squared at two a-piece between these teams, with the last encounter in Round 13 going the way of Dublin. Had these two teams played each other each week this year, Dublin would be leading.. oh dear... 16-2. Look, I'm definitely tipping Dublin. But I'm definitely going for PNL. |
This Christchurch outfit ey? I think it's safe to say no other coach could get more out of this team than meow meow. Look at the points ladder, and you'll see that the Saints are 5th and deserving of a place in the prelims. But how the heck did the manage to get a home preliminary final? I could go on about Christchurch... and I will too. The Saints first 150+ score came in Round 9, at the conclusion of which sat 2nd on the ladder and 6th on points. It's next 150+ score would come back-to-back (Round 12 & 13) fortunately against high-scoring opponents New York and Berlin. The extra effort in those matches meant slowed the Saints for their next game against Rio (127) in Round 14, which is now their last recorded loss. Since then, the Saints have been devastatingly good, posting a 151, a 146 then cracking the 160 barrier for the first time in Round 17 to steal 3rd at the last second, before again reaching 160 in a Sandilands inspired winning qualifying final (had they finished 4th, they would have lost against Dublin). This team has had a mixture of peaking at the right time of the season and at the right games, and also having a bit of luck on their side. That formula has been the feature of many premiership sides. A bonus fact that's worth knowing, is that Christchurch had an unbelievable amount of best XV and backup XV players unavailable last week, in which I was thinking "how lucky where they to win the qualifying final", but no, that wouldn't have mattered anyway. Just have a look at how they went in the Champions League last week (http://oi60.tinypic.com/2val1j9.jpg) (stats courtesy of Levi). No, you're not wrong, they did score 150 with Zac flowering Dawson, and with Shaun McKernan as captain. This team, and meow, can do no wrong. | (http://resources2.news.com.au/images/2007/04/06/va1237241381700/sandilands-5441314.jpg) |
(https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/616888652006711296/OjBncTxm.jpg) | BUT! The Suns are just a pretty bloody good team as well. If you include the finals series, the Suns are the second highest scoring team of the year; after being 10th on the points ladder after Round 6! I've mentioned the Suns slow start to the season plenty of times now, but for much of the year I've always felt that the Suns are the only team that could take the premiership away from Dublin. I know think they are one of two teams (Christchurch), but the Suns have scored higher for longer compared to the Saints, with 4 160+ scores and a 170+ score; a feat only Rio de Janeiro and Dublin have managed this year. Had these two teams played against each other every game this year, the Suns would lead 11-8, but with 9 of the past 13. But the Saints would have won 3 of the past 5, so this really is quite an awesome match we have on our hands and I'm heavily looking forward to it. It will be interesting to see how Sandilands plays against his the club he took to a premiership in 2012, and he's in amazing form yet again with a 150 and 143 in the last two weeks. He's just a finals specialist, and a legend. Will the Suns regret letting him go? I dunno. I really can't figure out who to tip, such is the evenness. I think I should tip the team I've thought would make it from the beginning (including Round 6), in the Mexico City Suns. But this could be the match of the year yet. |
And don't forget the reserves!
Three teams (Beijing, London and Tokyo) playing this week aren't playing seniors. What I require from you, is that you
NAME YOUR BEST SENIOR XV like you were playing finals. I will be scrutinising your best XV to determine if that is really who you would play, so as to ensure that the players available for the reserves matches are the ones that would normally be available. If I don't agree, then I will name one for you.
Home Team | | Away Team | Venue |

There is no HGA in reserve matches :)
Murphy Rance Birchall Tmac
Sloane (VC) Selwood Mundy Boak
Goldy (C)
Buddy Gunston Roughy Martin
NDS Thompson
Walters, Hansen, Van Berlo
Im feeling pretty good about this team. Buddy looks likely to play and should be fit. Goldy went good against Sandi so is in huge form and happy to have him back as captain. Sloane is on fire and looks 100%.
Lachy Hansen has had a terrible year but he was supposed to be my D4 before tmac stepped up. Hansen 87 last week was a great sign. Walters despite being great provides great cover on the bench. The only thing missing is Watson instead of Van Berlo.
that is untill mass restings probably come my way.
I think most would like to see a PNL v Christchurch Grand Final - guaranteed a new premier that way

IN: M. Watson, M. Lobbe, D. Rich
OUT: L. Hodge, T. Campbell, F. Ray
Well, not exactly the team we'd like to field against the #1 team in the comp, but lets give it our all ;D. Hodge a big out, top defender for us all season, went and attacked his own teammate, so disciplinary actions had to be taken. In comes a player we rate highly at the Reindeers in Matthew Watson. Watch him go berzerk against the Giants and kick 7 goals. Lobbe also a nice inclusion for Campbell, who has been out of form, so at least we have some ruckman playing. Rich a nice in though to help out midfield.
Marseilles Kings (so far)
J. Bews, L. McPharlin, F. Ray, J. Garlett, J. Griffin, C. McKenna
Not many there and going to be a tough one to win, unless the defence is on point like it has been all season. Conor McKenna making his debut for the reserves as well :D.

Should be about right.
got some great signs on the bench too, I can see big things for the following 4 guys;
Matthew Scharenberg
Josh Walker
Oscar McDonald
Jason Holmes
Sam Mitchell out. We're flowered.
Im not sure whats more suprising.

thats going to be a tough team to beat next week. Very scared of Rocky, there was only one team I didnt want him to go to and that was the Suns.
Interesting selection JROO.
McIntosh over Hurn against the Crows who don't tag?
You're a braver man than I...
Selwood just does whatever is needed to win. Duck, play for frees and now with Swan looking to go huge he takes him out.
as he was subbed off in the half time break, that means no sub comes on right?
8a. If they use it, any player who starts with a green vest, or is red vested in the first half, will be replaced by an emergency. This can happen for up to 3 players.
half time break is not the first half.
All year we have said HT break is included in the first half, so yes Swan is subbed off.
Might not get round to mid-round score updates this weekend :( will be a tad busy I reckon.
Make sure to continue the hype finalists!

hopefully he is my HGA. so 94 from him isnt terrible.
I have a bad feeling about this, reminds me of serbia. Soo dominant but somehow gets unlucky towards the end.
Need Goldy to pump a 150+ to make me feel better.
Swan to 83 and subbed off :'(. Given need to go big or go home to be honest against Dublin, so lets go for 150 Ray!!
Team submission stuff:
@Tokyo, you forgot to name emergencies. I'm happy enough to name the first three players on your reserves list you provided. You can discuss with me if you wanted, though.
I agree with Beijing's team. Had to look twice to make sure Matt Jones deserved his unofficial debut, but unfortunately it looks like it :-\
@London, below is the team I named for you (emergencies last 3 players), feel free to discuss if you disagree.
Dane Rampe
Sam Wright
Mark Baguley
Zach Tuohy
Dan Hannebery
Brent Stanton
Jarrad McVeigh
Danyle Pearce
Callum Sinclair
Mark LeCras
Josh Hill
Chris Mayne
Shane Edwards
Bradley Sheppard
Billy Hartung
Tom Lonergan
Cory Gregson

After last night:
Dublin off to a shaky start! While PNL would give passing marks to Enright & Williams. The Reindeers may have been a victim of the sub rule though, with Swan's 83 subbed out, and likey to be more than what Farren Ray will score as his replacement.
The Suns would be stoked with Sidebottom! Not so much with Bartel, but overall it was a successful night from the warriors of Fireball stadium. The Saints would be reasonably happy with up-and-down scorer Jamie Elliott posting a solid 89 too.

My hawk boys doing a great job as usual.
Sad to see my boy Rocky going soo well (as expected), however i cant feel too bad as Gunston has been huge for me this year, on his way to another good game.
About to go watch Goldy play, if he turns it on I should be looking real good. If he has a bad game im in trouble.
Poor scores from Dusty, Boak and Dal Santo and not a great score from Goldy.
Could Dublin have met their match?
It could come down to how Priddis goes tomorrow against the Crows who have been giving up big scores to midfielders lately.

Hey he started well for the Blues until GWS went on to dominate the second half of the game :-X.
When we miss like 1/3 of our normal starting team (Hodge, Harbrow, Shiel, Zerrett, Billings and arguably Myers/Hallahan), why the hell not take some risks as not much to lose? ;D
I tell you this, if we lose you wouldnt want to be in the rooms listening to the coach spray.
Martin Selwood Boak Murphy should go 400+ easy not barely 250.

Mostly your players score a lot more SC than DT (Goldy, Rance, Tmac, Mundy, Boak etc) . So this is a refreshing change.

thats what makes it more annoying. My guys are usally all high SC to DT players. this week they actually havent played that bad just in SC. If it was the standard thing then I would be fine, but I have had basically everyone under par except my hawk boys.
to put this into context you need to understand Serbia. They were better then Dublin ever was, it went undefeated in the home and away season and fell away towards the end of the year. It always seems to happen, not sure if its stars taking a break with the season closing. But its incredibly frsutrating having a team going beserk when it doesnt matter then falling apart and getting called a chocker.
which you know fair well will happen if i lose.
SC just annoys me.
Tom Lynch didnt touch that ball that quarter and went from 44 to 60
Cause Lynch was beastly in the first quarter, and his kicking efficiency is pretty top notch this game stats wise 8). Need Pridda to get more of it and cover some ground, but Thompson having a big one, just need to hope his SC stays low.
All aboard the miracle train!! Sheridan, Nate Jones and Ray to go 400 between them possible yeah?

Behind 100 points or so with 1 less player to play. Forward line is saving us while we had some downers to pretty much equal Dublin's. Would be in with a better chance if it wasn't for Gunston.
You forgot NDS in this Hellopplz.

had just noticed that too ;)
Lol Memphs despite of Holz is real
Well Pridda (CC) + Lynch managed to make up minor ground on Sloane + Thompson (About 35 surprisingly :D).
Didn't see Ray was omitted on Friday so guess we get Griffin's score, yet to come :o.

I know you might think we probably should have played finals this year given the talent on our list.... but unfortunately we had a terrible run with injuries and just missed out
there you go holz saying your being ripped of by CD
franklin 4 touches 2 marks and a goal 39 Sc at HT
Hanners 14 touches and a point 37
no way in hell franklin deserves that score
Haha c'mon, people saying that players are getting ripped off, Fyfe points etc. do you think they just pull scores out of their asses or do you not know the scoring system as well as you thought you did?
I get the impression that people believe champion data are sitting around twirling mustaches going "ha ha! This will annoy those dastardly fantasy coaches!"
My other team in Euros has Heeney Holz, PNL just have Laverde instead :P.

nah just stirring holz up :P
it ebbs and flows really
haven't watched the game except for 5 minutes but did see a few nice taps on's etc from franklin so that is where his influence score would come in
So it comes down to:
Suns - 423.5 Points + Nroo + Johnson
Saints - Roberton + Dempster + Gilbert + Sandi (C) + HGA (currently 45)
I'm in the lead, but hopefully Sandi has a quiet one against his old team

I don't think they pull scores out of their asses, but I really do think they scale up the popular SC picks whenever they can. E.g. Buddy being on the score he is at the moment.

not with tmac.

already on 5 SC points, with 2 handballs and 2 FA.
Omac had a better quarter and only got 3.
Jones -2 Wow i know its 4 clangers but still.
Mexico City got this. Outstanding effort from the Suns so well done to them.
Wouldn't have mattered anyway, no way Sandi will play next week with Freo two games clear on top.

Dublin stumble, Reindeers Crumble
The Reindeers were presented with such a rare opportunity to beat Dublin; this was just the third time Dublin had scored less than 150 (third lowest score of the year as well). But, a host of unavailable stars robbed the Reindeers with the capability to take the match, and the better team won on the day. The Destroyers go to their second straight final.

The Suns Rise for the Final
This Mexico City team is ready. Christchurch just outplayed Dublin the Champions League, so when you say Mexico City won by more than 100 SC points, it makes you doubt whether a Dublin premiership was such a certainty in the first place. Well done Mexico and Dublin for making the Final. The two best teams in the comp playing in the Grand Final, is a fitting way to end the season.
There can be a lot of unwanted "general soreness" in the last round of AFL. So let's hope the game isn't too effected by outs.
