Collingwood continue to trail Treloar

Published on

It is looking increasingly likely that Collingwood will make a move for Greater Western Sydney star Adam Treloar at the end of the season as uncertainty surrounds the future of the talented midfielder. The youngster has been an integral part of GWS’s impressive season so far, and the club know Treloar could have a huge say in their hopes of securing a top-four spot this year. But with his contract coming to an end in the summer, the Giants are beginning to get a bit worried about the prospect of rival AFL clubs beginning to start trying to tempt a player who would walk into most teams in the league. While the club is still confident of agreeing to a new deal with the 22-year-old, Collingwood have reportedly made it clear they would be willing to trump any offer the Giants would make.

Treloar has been one of GWS’ real stars this season, currently averaging a career-high 27.7 disposals and catching the eye of plenty of teams throughout the league. Last season was a breakout campaign for Treloar, on the red carpet as well as on the field, averaging 28 disposals and six tackles to finish fourth in club’s best and fairest award. The youngster has picked up from where he left off last year. In a team packed with young talent, the Giants have long tipped Treloar to be one of the real stars of the future. The club will be determined to hang onto a player who they believe will be an important part of their future.

As well as the Magpies, the stylish midfielder has also been gaining admiring glances from the Hawks, who are currently priced at 5/2 with bet365 to win the Grand Final this season. With a potential two-year contract to stay in Sydney on the table worth around $500,000 a season, Treloar could now be set to receive offers of over $700,000 from the likes of the Magpies come the end of the season. GWS could have a battle on their hands. One key aspect that could come into the midfielder’s decision will be his reported desire to return to his home state of Victoria, something the Pies and Hawks will be hoping is the case.

Treloar has seen a number of his team-mates commit their futures to the Giants in recent months, with Dylan Shiel shunning a host of lucrative offers to leave Western Sydney to sign a new two-year deal. With Jeremy Cameron signing his new five-year extension in March and Will Hoskin-Elliott pledging his future to the club in May, the Giants will know convincing Treloar to stay could be the final piece of the jigsaw in terms of keeping their current stars at the club. Four years after making their debut in the AFL, it is clear for all to see that the Giants are a club on the up and Treloar may feel this is the best place for him at this point in his career. With their ambitious plans and talented young squad, GWS will know keeping their in-demand midfielder would send a real signal of intent to the rest of the league.
