HISTORY:

Born in New Zealand, Savage moved to Australia as a boy. He was drafted by Hawthorn from the Dandenong Stingrays with the 75th selection (5th round) in the 2008 AFL Draft.

2009  The teenage midfielder was a suprise packetafter being a late bottom-age pick in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft. Despite missing most of the season with a shoulder reconstruction, he was named an emergency for the crucial round 19 clash with minor premier Stkilda before playing the last 3 games, during which he averaged 14 disposals.

2010   Did not appear at senior level in 2010. Was named emergency in several games and played in the opening 2 NAB Cup fixtures.

2011   After an outstanding pre-season he demanded a spot in the team until a shoulder injury derailed him towards the end of the season. Savage was nominated for the 2011 AFL Rising Star after Hawthorn's round 8 game against St Kilda. Savage had 26 disposals, 14 marks and kicked 2 goals in Hawthorn's 30 point win. Averaged 18 disposals, two clearances and a goal a game and his pace and hunger for the contest was immense. Looked set for a long and successful career.

2012   Savage was Hawthorn's version of 'Kermit the Frog' in 2012, wearing the substitute vest in eight matches (including all of the Hawks' finals). As a result, his average game time was just 64 per cent.

VERDICT: Was the sub 8 times in 2012 affecting his average, he went from averaging 77 in 2011 to 55 in 2012. I think this may have been due to the shoulder injury he suffered at the end of 2011. If he can cement his spot in the team after a good pre-season and Nab showing he could make you some cash at his current price of 285k. Could benefit greatly from Clinton Young's departure, although he might find himself in a battle with Bradley Hill for that wingman-type role. One to keep an eye on early in the season. There are too many other midfielders around the same price or cheaper that have more upside so picking him would be a risk especially since he wore the green vest 8 times in 2012. Not for me but he could easily bounce back in 2013 and make a decent profit.

PREDICTION: If he doesn't wear the vest, anywhere from 75-85 .. if he does expect a similar average from last year

Clarko seems to like him coming off the bench as an impact player, I reckon we'll see more of that next year. However may not be sub as much as he is a year older and the vest generally goes to kids, and he should be in for more game time with whitex and young out. Not for me as Embley is a safer and better option at around that price. Nice write up though.
