Thoughts
The recently re-signed Saints skipper had a return to form last year, after a very disappointing 2011 (SC- 87.1), he managed to re-group and finish 2012 with an average of 95.9. Although it may have seemed he returned to his gut running best, his stats say otherwise, his averages went down in handballs, marks and disposals yet he kicked 47 goals, 11 more than 2011 from three less games. This suggests Riewoldt played much deeper in the forward line, to great effect no doubt. At his best he would run defenders up and down the ground until they would “blow-up”, Riewoldt had such an amazing tank, and no defender could go with him all day. Now with the extreme increase in interchange rotations and the intense defensive zones applied, cramping his space, no longer can Riewoldt play that style and run his opponent into the ground. While he did manage to kick plenty of goals and produce quality scoring, five of his hundreds were against bottom 5 sides. He will start his thirteenth season as a 30 year-old and Riewoldt’s best is unfortunately behind him.

Verdict
I would steer clear, despite a return to form in 2012, Riewoldt is a year older now and playing a more permanent role up forward, adding in a less successful St Kilda side, I can only see his scores declining. For those who have faith in him, the Saints did recruit Tom Lee to play alongside Riewoldt. But don’t be fooled, there are much better options out there, Saint Nick’s fantasy days are unfortunately over.

Old St. Nick is well past it I think, with the Saints probably on the decline still.

Great write up!

Nah Saint Nick's day is done I think.
He was a SC gun for a long time but his knees and age have caught up with him a bit

Adamant

Yeah, definitely past it fantasy wise. Hope he has a solid couple of years for my AXV team though.
