HISTORY:

2008 Playing for West Coast after two injury riddled seasons the victorian finally broke through for his AFL debut, playing seven matches and further developing his game at East Fremantle. A raw tall, running defender or wingman.

2009  The Eagles were disappointed when the Victorian flagged his intentions to move home at the end of season. Was tried as the club's third tall defender with some success providing good rebound and run late in the season. West Coast rated him highly and wanted to retain him long-term.

2010 The Eagles convinced him to sign on for a one year deal in 2010 and only managed to play 8 games. Was delisted at the end of the year

2011  Sydney decided to pick up Spangher for the 2011 season. The tall defender added much needed height and run to the Sydney defence. Had been training with Hawthorn in the lead up to the 2010 NAB AFL Draft. A suprise packet in his first year with Sydney they experimented with him as a forward. Injury ruined the first half of his campaign, but he forced his way into the side late in the season and played the last 5 games including both finals, kicking seven goals in that stretch.

2012  Didnt play a game in 2012 and the Hawks made a late move for him and signed him on for the 2013 season using pick 66

VERDICT: The Hawks have lost Thomas Murphy to Gold Coast and Stephen Gilham to GWS so they picked up Spangher for depth. Will he get games in 2013? Will he play enough to be worthy of selection ? . Wanted to come back home to Victoria maybe thats what he needs. Watch NAB to see how he goes and what role he plays.

PREDICTION: If he can get some games expect an average of 50-60. There are cheaper rooks that will average the same and make more cash ?

HAWTHORN has sprung a late trade surprise, picking up Matt Spangher from the Sydney Swans on Friday.

The Hawks swapped NAB AFL Draft pick 66 for the defender and pick 72.

Spangher joins Brian Lake in adding to the beaten grand finalists' key defensive options.

Since the end of the season, the Hawks have lost Thomas Murphy to Gold Coast, delisted back-up big man Jarrad Boumann, while Stephen Gilham's future is still unknown.

Hawthorn will be Spangher's third AFL club.

The 25-year-old crossed to the Swans from West Coast at the end of 2010, after playing 26 games in five years at the Eagles.

He managed six senior games for the Swans in 2011, and none this year.

At 193cm and 90kg, Spangher will give Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson an extra option in covering opponents' key forwards.

He was also used as a forward by the Swans.

"For a long time we've admired Matt as a quality person, and we're confident he will fit in well with the culture of our club," Clarkson said.

Lake crossed to the Hawks from the Western Bulldogs on the opening day of the Gillette Trade Period.

Nice write up FF, not too sure about the 60-70 average though. If the Hawks play him (and thats a big IF) i dont think he will aaverage 60-70 as he will be a pure hold down player, whilst LAke and Gibson run the show. He didnt play the start of the 2012 season due to injury as well which wasnt good. I think the Swans didnt see him play in the 1s next year so they traded him for the pick. To injury prone to me and a definite stay away. A risky pick up for the Hawks

Put it this way...

He's be my first player locked into my side if I was in one of those leagues where the lowest scoring team wins

This guy is an absolute hack and I cannot believe Hawthorn threw away a pick like that
