HISTORY:

2007 Might have been dropped briefly in 2007, but had another good season to underline his enormous potential. One of Essendons most talented youngsters, he appears determined to make it to the top. Played with wonderfull spirit in the midfield and was handy near goal.

2008 Started the 2008 season slowly, but finished strongly and made a name for himself as a goalsneak who can take a big mark. Can play in a number of positions and was one of the hardest workers at Windy Hill. Sixth in the best and fairest.

2009 The Essendon hierachy was again impressed with Monfries workrate in 2009, with the South Australian showing a great ability to lead, crumb and apply pressure in the forward line. Took 116 marks and booted 25 goals for the year being rewarded with another top-10 finish in the best and fairest. With increased fitness was marked to move into the midfield for 2010.

2010 Kicked 25 goals again and topped the goal kicking table for the bombers and finished in the top 10 of the best and fairest despite missing 5 games through injury for the season. Has become an important element in the Bombers structure, especially as a lead up forward but, coming into his seventh season in 2011 has room to improve his consistency.

2011 Struggled early to adapt to his role in a restructured forward line, but by mid-year had found his niche as a high half forward, wingman and rotating midfielder. Played the best game of his career in the win over Adelaide in round 17 and finished the season having kicked 27 goals, the highest tally of his career.

2012 Kicked 18 goals in a season where he played in a number of different positions. Bits and pieces player never really got going in 2012 and has decided to leave the Bombers to go back home to Adelaide to play for Port.

VERDICT: Played mainly as a lead up small, crumbing forward with stints on the wing and midfield. He left the Bombers so he could pursue a role in the midfield for Port in 2013. Can he achieve his goal of becoming a midfielder ?

Monfries said the prospect of a leading midfield role at Port was another factor in leaving the Bombers, where he was predominantly a forward.

“To be able to have more opportunity to play up the ground in the midfield is something I have always wanted to do,” he said.

PREDICTION: If he plays as a midfielder as Hinkley wants him to he could be an option in the forward line for 2013. Can he push his average up this year playing midfield .. 80-90 ?. Watch his NAB performances.

$350k is a bit of an awkward price, which is why most people won't give him a second thought.

But I for one, will watch his NAB cup performances closely, as he could well make his home in Port's midfield, hopefully pulling some nice DT numbers too.
He might not, but definitely worth a look...

Nice write-up mate.

Adamant

Nice write up FF.

Yeah, 350k is tricky price, but will have a lot of mid time and can see him improving to about an 85ish average.

Even with a good NAB, probably cant fit him in.

Toga

Good thinking! Could definitely do a brad ebert next year! Awkward price though compared to lecca and co.

Nice write up though :)

Yeah theres too many other bargains in the forward line.. but if he goes nutty in the Nab might have to consider him

henry

I agree it's hard to fit him in when the likes of JJK, Lecca, Gray, Knights ans Byrnes are as much as 100k cheaper than him and will average around the same. Not for me but good write up.

The F.A.R.K.

Cant really compare this  bloke to brad ebert, ebert always had that 100 av in him just never got to show it. Ebert was a first round pick he was always set for that high av wce just played him in a poor role. Monfries is just a spud fwd who will ave 75 at port

Monfries was pick #14 in the '04 national draft...

You say ebert was played in a poor role at WCE... Monfries cited one of the reasons for leaving essendon was wanting more midfield time... If he gets that midfield time he could well be compared to ebert imo.

Yeh exactly. There are too many other midpricers in the fwd line ahead of Monfries atm

Shihan7

He was a standout in the London game, but a bit too awkward price for me unfortunately.
