A consistent saviour in defence for many DT's over the past years, Brett Deledio looks set to lose his DPP status after being unleashed into the midfield in 2012. While we all knew what he could do, it was only in glimpses as the former #1 draft pick wsa restricted to defence for the start of his career. Being a MID only next year, this poses some DT coaches a dilemma - which tiger? With many people locking in young superstar Trent Cotchin for 2013, Brett Deledio may just be the dark horse, a good POD for your team next year. So, if it comes down to it... who should you choose?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trent Cotchin (Richmond Tigers)

Age: 22

Price: $569,600

2011 average: 93.6

2012 average: 110.4

2012 lowest score: 61 (vs PA)

2012 highest score: 152 (vs WBD)

Probability 100+ score: 77%

Standard deviation: 21.1

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brett Deledio (Richmond Tigers)

Age: 25

Price: $568,000

2011 average: 91.4

2012 average: 110.3

2012 lowest score: 77 (vs PA)

2012 highest score: 160 (vs ESS)

Probability 100+ score: 77%

Standard deviation: 21.5

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The judgement:

Price: Even. Averaging only 0.1 ppg different to one another, their prices are indistinguishable.

Scoring ability: Even. Lids' highest score was 8 points higher than Cotch's, however they both scored tons in 77% of their games, making them virtually indistinguishable in their scoring ability.

Consistency: Even. Cotchin's standard deviation was only 0.4 better than Lids', so if you want to be picky he was a tad more consistent but to be honest, their about on par with one another again.

Durability: Deledio Can't go past the guy holding the current longest consecutive game streak.

Current injuries:Cotchin. Lids has undergone a post-season knee op. While it probably isn't a big deal, it is worth consdering, but if he is ready to go by NAB cup i don't think it should influence your decision.

Susceptibility to sub: n/a

Susceptibility to tagging: Deledio will be more susceptible to taggers next year imo. Cotchin has just about stamped himself on the 'untaggable' list, so teams have discovered that they can curb his influence by tagging Lidsy. Despite this, I'm confident lids will be working on this through the off season and don't think tagging him will be too affective next season.

Verdict: Wow. Who would have thought just how even these team mates could be! While Cotchin is obviously the more popular choice among coaches at present, Lids really could be a great POD for your midfield next season. It really comes down to personal preference in the end i think, and how much of a role YOU think natural development will play in the development of these two players. I think both will develop next season, however Cotchin being younger probably has a bit more potential to increase his DT output more, however lids is also likely to if he continues to get so much midfield time next season, which I am confident he will. Like I said, Lids has undergone a post-season knee op, so if you're keen on him, make sure you watch that closely over pre season. But... if i have to choose a winner, I'll say Cotchin!.

Of course, if VS would be so kind as to let Lids retain his DPP it would be problem solvered, but there's not much chance of that happening :P

Very nice write up, cheer for that.

When left free to play they seem to score very similarly so I think that the tag has to decide this one. Lids just didn't show much in the way of handling the tag last year whereas Cotchin was smashin it to pieces. This battle has to go to Cotchin, he's taken the main tag most weeks and handled it well this year whereas Lids has seemed to struggle

P.s. no chance off dpp for Lids :p

thanks mate ;D

yeah i agree. in most areas i mentioned they are indistinguishable but the tag really does set them apart. like you said, cotch can handle it very well, while lids struggles a bit... i think the way to go is to start cotchin and look to deledio as an upgrade if he can show he can handle a tag!

haha and yes, i know he won't get DPP but we can only hope :P

Justin Bieber

It's a tie!! Very similar, but I see Cotchin only improving.

Good write up  :). I'm going with Cotchin as I reckon he has more upside, his last 10 weeks were better than lids' indicating the big things to come. Deledio also seems a bit susceptible to taggers which influences my decision.

Fixed :P

Wow, how close are these blokes!? I would look at that and say Deledio takes my fancy but that isn't the case.. Nonetheless I think both will stay 110+ and one of these boys will breakout into fantasy elite ;)

Excellent again champ!

Again, another awesome write up mate!

These two are more even than I thought. Would love to go Lids as a sneaky unique, but this was his first year averaging 100+ and with past averages of 91, 89 & 96...I don't think it's worth starting him.

If he can show that he can repeat that 110+ average again, he might become an upgrade target.

Shihan7

Great write up Toga!

I will be going Cotchin as well but they are both guns and very even.

Wasn't it also Cotch's first 100+ year???

Yes, but Lids has been a mid-90's average player for a while now, and has only just broken that 110 mark.

Cotchin has gone from a 74 average --> 93 --> 110 in the last 3 years, so should improve on that :)

At the same time lids has been restricted to that mid-90's average because he has been restricted to defense for most of his career, and 2012 was his first true year through the mids... So while I expect cotch's natural development to be more significant than lidsy's, I still expect him to improve as well :)

Capper

Totally agree, if Lids kept his DPP he would be the choice, but the way Cotchin finished the year you cant go past him.

But neither for me at this stage. Great write up

Holz

Im going neither but if i had to i think I would go lids. Cotchin has the potential to go 120 but i feel Lids is the safer picks i can see him rising to 113-115 average. Cotchin coudl go anywhere from 110-120.

Ricochet

have to go with Cotchin here. Young and improving rapidly, he has the potential to go 120+

zeddyzed

Deledio for mine.

Sorry but Cotchin hasn't stamped himself as untaggable, and will still be the number 1 target week in week out for taggers. Taggers were able to negate his influence in a number of games, allowing Lids to run amok.
While his finish to the year was outstanding, I think Cotchin will have too much attention to be in my DT. I think his real value is in Supercoach where his silky skills will lead to a massive avg in 2013.

Deledio is mid 20s, a number 1 draft pick averaging 110, durable as hell, and second in line to get a tag...that = LOCK
