2012: Consolidated his 2011 numbers. I expect Rance to continue steady improvement into a premium defender. He is a key defender however which makes your SC self all excited but it can be a limiting factor for DT. I expect a DT career average of mid 80's to be reached next season and maintained.

Premium Player Rating (DEF) - 7.8/10 Ok so he is a premium now, but for DT? I Won't be starting him for the mid 70 average points cost that he will be wearing. He will have less responsibility and better matchups now Chaplin has arrived but he is still a key defender and that is the role he will play and the player he will be developed into. I do expect a natural steady improvement from him and he could average mid 80's next season and from a defender you could do a lot worse. Still not for me, I will chase players in a role that allows them to ton up more often, with only 2 last season Rance might get 4 or 5 this season as he gets free more to use the ball and intercept but don't expect miracles from a key position defender.

Rating based on: Position, Role, Scoring potential, Premium status now.

2011: Had a terrific season in 2011 and the mid-sized defender was nominated for All-Australian selection. He topped the Hawks for marks, averaging 7.2 a game and his hard running and superb kicking out of the backline made him a key weapon in a side that placed a premium on patient and precise disposal.

2012: A very consistent season, there were ups and downs due to niggling injuries but in general you could and will again pencil GB in for 85-95 every week.

Premium Player Rating (DEF) - 8.8/10 So this seems low for an AA Running defender, especially in the Hawks back line. Well it might be just that but not by much if at all. The facts are the numbers don't lie. Birchall is a top notch premium DT defender, but Suckling is coming on nicely and his ball use is not far off as accurate and effective as Birchalls and we all know it has a bit more penetration. Birchall looked set to go on to Scotland like averages of high 90's -100. Not many ever do but he is one that can. He had 4 shockers last season and take them away and he should average in the low 90's. I just  don't think he will grab that extra 7-12 on this seasons average that will take his to the almost unreachable defenders average of 95-100. Still I can't see his role changing and I like the idea of Suckling going onto a wing and feeding the fwd line, so if Birchall can hold down the job of #1 play maker out of defense for the Hawks he can hit that ever elusive 95+ average. Needs help from team mates however as we have seen him locked down in games and the Hawks really need to work hard to get him free and get the ball in his hands, the upside of the attention he does receive from opposition teams is that he still managed to average 88.

In Short: A safe bet for one of your starting premium defenders in 2013 if fit through pre-season.

Rookie PLayer Rating (FWD) - (7.4/10) Think Milera, think Saad, think a rebuilding Saints and a need for people to come straight in and do a job. This bloke has been very good in the WAFL.This guy can be expected after a big and professionsl AFL preseason to hit the ground running right from the word go and make an impact. An impact for us Dt'ers that is, not easy to find guaranteed starting rooks now we are back to normal with GSC and GWS start up seasons behind us, plenty of talent will be drafted and available, and a lot of them will play, but when? and how often, and the vest? Guys like this mature aged role fillers will be gold. Watch the preseason for him, watch the Nab Cup, if named for round one seriously consider as he should play regular games and make good cash for you.

Brian Lake (born 27 February 1982), born Brian Harris, is an Australian rules footballer, currently playing for the Hawthorn Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL).
Picked late in the 2001 AFL Draft at pick 71 from Woodville West-Torrens, Lake was a relatively late developer. Making his AFL debut late in the 2002 season, he was seen as a raw full-back who was some way from fully developing.
However, by the 2005 season, Lake's jobs in blanketing some of the best full-forwards in the game were seen as outstanding. He had come of age and shown significant improvement, much like many other of his Western Bulldogs teammates (such as Daniel Giansiracusa, Robert Murphy and Dale Morris), which led the team to within half a game of a finals berth.
After a two-week suspension in 2006 which resulted in him missing the first two premiership matches, Lake made his return against St Kilda, where he was given the job on Fraser Gehrig.
In 2007 he developed into one of the best full-backs in the competition. His 2007 season will be remembered for the match against St. Kilda where he held two time Coleman Medal winner Fraser Gehrig to no possessions for the entire match.
At Christmas 2007 he legally changed his name from Brian Harris to Brian Lake to keep his father's family name alive.[1] Harris is his mother's maiden name, he was born out of wedlock.
He currently resides in Caroline Springs, a suburb in Melbourne's west.
Brian Lake has earned himself a place in the 2009 AFL All-Australian team's back pocket after an electrifying season 2009. This being his first All-Australian honours.
In season 2010, he managed to again be named in the 2010 AFL All-Australian at full back. He undoubtedly had his best season to date and would often rebound from the Bulldog's defence to set up attacks.
Brian Lake has often been referred by many commentators as a "defensive monster" due to his freakishly ability to out strength his opponent and take the mark in contested situations.
Lake, along with pick 27, were traded to the Hawthorn Football Club at the end of the 2012 Toyota AFL season during the trade period, in return for picks 21 and 41.

2012: A return to AA form for Lake in 2012, his season was not all smooth sailing and he had a few niggles as well as a few shockers, all in all a return of 76avg from lake was more than we expected in DT and more than enough given what we paid for him if we had him from the start. A key defender, but one of the only ones that had bucked the trend and been able to average a ton in DT, he didn't quite get back to that level but I think in a healthy season you can bank on mid 80+ average from Lake again in 2013.

Played: 20 Games, 4 tons high of 112. 7 games under 70 with a low of 29. That's 13 games over 70.

Premium Player Rating (DEF) - 8.4/10 OK I stop at 8.4 because I just don't know if Lake can ever quite get back to his best and AA form (2009/2010 Both). He has a move to the Hawks, which is great for Hawthorn and will make their back 6 formidable, Lake will get the big jobs and while he excels at reading the play taking intercept marks and setting up play from the final line of defense, it won't be an easier or harder for him to score DT points at Hawthorn.

What he may get is some of that lovely Hawthorn back 6 kick to kick action, they do it well and often and he will be a link in that chain more often than not. Me I think he is a safe bet for 85 this season and could go 95 easily, but you just don't know, with a big preseason in him or at least a healthy one, you could do a lot worse than start with Lake in 2013, tho I probably won't in DT, he will be in serious contention for my SC team again.

The competitive midfielder was fifth at the club for total kicks (210) and his efforts were recognized with an equal-seventh placing in the best and fairest. Again underwent shoulder surgery at the end of the season but, at 21, is expected to keep improving and will be a permanent fixture of the team for years to come.

Given a full preseason under a new coach with a clear mandate to demand a much higher output from his charges every week in 2013, a fit and motivated Hartlett almost certain to be a major part of the Port midfield rotations should without any doubt have a breakout season. I would not be surprised to see him lift his average in 2013 to 95-105. Yes a breakout season is generally defined by a 20 point increase in average. This bloke is DUE.

He played off half back this season some, but also found his way fwd to boot 5 goals. A good kick of the ball, time spent off half back helped him learn to read the play and be accountable, he racked up average numbers in disposals this season but for the games played IMPRESSIVE numbers in tackles. 4.4 per game in fact. It is common for star midfielders to be played in defense as they develop. I expect a 15-20 point increase for 2013. Almost a lock if fit in the preseason and on the ball in the nab cup.

It's a tough one Adamant.... Shiels in 2011 is what you want from your "breakout" candidates.

It could be Caddy, Conca, Hartlett, any number of developing mids.

You won't keep any, because you want a full midfield at 115+ none of these will get there, but if they lift 20 points and get close to 100 average, they have scored very well for you while you had them, and end up being an easy sideways trade to a true premium mid season and you made cash and outscored all all your opponents who played rooks instead as they worked towards upgrading to a full premium midfield.

Hard to get your mid pricers or breakout candidates right but if you do you win big, if not you burn a trade and maybe make no cash,

I think Hartlett is a safe bet, and not as a defender, as a mid that costs you 80 average $ and should be able to be sold at a 95-100 average $ if he breaks out.

Recruited from the Northern Knights the former number 1 draft pick has become a frustrating player, Has been one game away from breaking out to become one of the elite ruck man of the competition ever since he stepped onto the AFL scene. Has found it difficult at times being the sole ruckman through games and contesting with several niggling injures in his short career, The emergence of Hampson and Warnock has eased the pressure on Kruezer after returning from a severe knee injury earlier this year he never reached the heights we all predicted he would.
Kruezer has lost a considible amount of weight in an effort to become more mobile around the ground and play a larger role as the teams Ruckman go Forward player in a team that is in dire need of a key forward.
When on song and fully fit he plays not only as a ruck man but he becomes an extra midfielder with his ability to read the play well and his endurance for a man his size.

Mid Player Rating (MID) - 7.9/10 You could say I'm being a bit harsh on Kruezer and he does deserve to be ranked a bit higher but with his injury niggles will he become the star ruck man we all expect next year. Struggles to get hit outs and become the dominate ruck man on the ground with 11 of his 20 games reaching 20 or more hit outs.
With no Hampson and no Warnock in the team he looked like a true premium ruck man Averaged 32 hit outs alongside an averaged of 82 Dreamteam points so he does benefit by being the sole ruck man in the side. With Hampson and Warnock both pushing for more game time, Kruezer will find himself spending more time in the forward line and this could hamper his DT average. One day he will breakout and justify his worth as a number 1 draft pick whether it will be next year or the years after is a mystery.

Koby Stevens was recruited from the Gippsland Power after he was named on the wing in the 2008 TAC Cup team of the year the following year he captained the AIS/AFL Academent Squad and was in the leadership ground at Vic Country. Touted as one of the best youngsters in the land many thought he would be selected within the first round this wasn't the case as he was selected at the start of the second round, Many coaches didn't want to select him as he was still recovering from osteitis pubis he sustained mid season and didn't take part in much of the testing at the Draft Camp

Koby Stevens is a strong in and under midfielder, Loves getting the contested footy and his work rate is second to none, Can also play across the half forward line with his strong hands and neat kicking skills. Stevens however has found it hard to break into the Eagles midfield playing 11 games within 3 years when he has been giving the chance he has spent most of his games as the sub despite impressing in the WAFL.

Now 21 Stevens has hinted he wants to pursue opportunities elsewhere and has requested to be traded out of the west, Many clubs have peaked interest in the highly rated youngster and could find himself lining up round 1 next year in new colours.

Mid Player Rating (MID) - 7.5/10 If moved to another club he could have a really good season, Standing at 187cm and weighing 83kg he becomes the perfect midfield has good strength along with neat disposal skills and can get his own footy, Will be a welcoming addition to any AFL club, Weather West Coast want to let him go is another story, Despite being down the pecking order at the Eagles they would not want to let him go as they would know better than anyone how good this kid can be. If however a trade can be made it would be hard not to see him as a breakout candidate for the 2013 season.
