Great to see you guys doing it again this year, you were a great help last year. If you have the time it would be great if you could look at Andrew Moore and Shaun Atley.

Shaun Atley

Age: 20yr    Games: 39     Born: September 13, 1992
Height: 189cm     Weight: 81kg     Position: Midfield
Last Drafted: Round 1, Pick #17 2010 National Draft

Came to North with big wraps on his stoppage play and explosive speed off the mark and gave glimpses of what a damaging midfielder he should become.

North’s top pick in the 2010 NAB AFL Draft played the first 13 games of his debut season and 16 overall. Was outstanding against Gold Coast and Essendon in rounds 12 and 13, but fatigue and knee soreness then limited his output.

Premium Player Rating (DEF/MID) - 8.5/10 Should have a breakout season, nothing to suggest otherwise. Taken as a midfielder he has found a home and a future as a running defender at North. Is a lock in their best 22 and in a team that over uses the ball he should be the king of uncontested possessions in 2013 (backmen). Expect an 80 -95 average if he kicks on as expected, watch the preseason and Nab Cup for form but these are the type of defenders you want in DT.

Rating based on; statistical historical likelihood of breakout season, form, job security, potential.

Travis Cloke
great work

Travis Cloke

#32   Collingwood Magpies
Age: 25yr 6mth    Games: 174     Born: March 5, 1987
Height: 196cm     Weight: 108kg     Position: Forward
Last Drafted: Round 3, Pick #39 2004 National Draft
Last Drafted By: Collingwood Magpies

The Player - A man mountain at the peak of his powers, Cloke is arguably the best key forward in the game. Endowed with outstanding endurance, strength and a raking left boot, Cloke's performance at centre half forward is nothing short of vital to Collingwood's future success. Teams well with Chris Dawes up forward, and regularly features in the side's best during September. Has overcome his well documented struggles in front of goal, and looms as a force to be reckoned with in 2012.

2012 (Colliwobblers)

A forgettable season marred by extended periods of poor form and contract negotiations. Whether the negotiations affected his season or not is irrelevant, it was patchy at best, and while he showed at times he can lay claim to being one of the Elite few of the competition and demand the price to match, he was at best a headache for DT owners and spent much of his time warming the DT pine.

2011
An unbelievable season from the 24-year-old. Took the competition by the scruff of the neck, and it showed when the end of season rewards were handed out. Named at centre half forward in the All-Australian team for the first time in his career. Kicked a career-high 69 goals to run second in the Coleman Medal.

To cap it off, he ran third in the Copeland Trophy. Cloke was able to elevate himself into the pantheon of the competition’s elite, goaling in 23 of 25 games. Kicked five or more goals in four matches (including bags of six in consecutive weeks), and his seven finals goals elevated him to 12th on the list of the most goals kicked by a Collingwood player in finals.

Was a colossus in the preliminary final, hauling in some breathtaking pack marks and kicking truly when it came to the crunch (having ridded himself of the inaccurate tag during the season). Began the Grand Final like a house on fire with three goals in the first half, before the supply dried up.

2010
Stepped up following the retirement of Anthony Rocca to produce his best season since 2007. Went goalless on only four occasions, kicking 38.40 for the year and played some outstanding individual matches.

His most commanding performance came in round 20 against the lowly Essendon when he helped himself to 16 marks, 22 disposals and 5.5. Also bagged five in round eight against Fremantle at Subiaco Oval, and had single-figure possessions only twice. Missed two games through suspension but didn’t miss a beat upon return.

Had a fantastic opening to the finals, kicking three against Geelong in the preliminary finals romp. Unfortunately became better known for his inaccuracy than his form during the latter stages of the season, highlighted by his two ‘gettable’ misses in the first half of the drawn Grand Final.

Fortunately, neither came back to bite the side, due in part to his goal â€" the last of the match â€" from the top of the square with only three minutes remaining to put the Magpies back in front by a point. Didn’t register a major in the replay, but it mattered not as the Pies recorded their first premiership since 1990.

2009
His preparation for the season was compromised when he was assaulted while at the Gold Coast on holiday. Bounced back to produce a solid season. His year peaked in round 14 against the Bombers when he had 19 disposals and kicked four goals. Began to take more of the ruck work, winning a career-high 38 hitouts.

Wasn’t as prolific in front of goal as he had been in previous years, kicking only 22.26. Tapered at the end of the year, and kicked only one goal in three finals.

2008
Wasn’t quite as spectacular as he had been the previous year, but still turned out a consistent season at centre half forward. Kicked 40 goals in total, and polled Brownlow votes in four games. Twice managed a bag of five goals, again starred on Anzac Day and again dominated against Geelong (four goals, nine marks, two Brownlow votes).

Also appeared to enjoy the presence of Chris Dawes alongside him late in the year (kicking four and five goal hauls and receiving Brownlow votes in two of the four home and away games Dawes played). Finished sixth in the Copeland Trophy.

2007
Became a Copeland Trophy winner before he had even turned 21. Started the season slowly but began to hit form on Anzac Day with 24 disposals, 13 marks and a Brownlow vote. It also marked the start of his dramas in front of goal (1.3 for the afternoon).

Began to pile on the goals and record some big numbers with his overhead marking, but still somehow stayed under the radar of the media spotlight. Kicked four goals against eventual premiers Geelong in the round 15 loss. He kicked four goals twice, and three goals on five occasions.

Announced his arrival in September, kicking three goals in the elimination final against Sydney, 1.3 (and 21 disposals) against West Coast before capping the year off with an outstanding three goals, 13 marks and 15 disposals in the epic preliminary final loss to Geelong. Kicked 39 goals for the season and received the Bob Rose Trophy as the Best Finals Player.

2006
Didn’t suffer from second year blues, but still didn’t hit the heights of 2005. Kicked only six goals in 15 matches, but was trialled at centre half back with some promising results. Missed four weeks mid-year but a 22-disposal, two-goal game against Hawthorn in round 17 (earning him his first Brownlow vote) showed that his progress was well and truly on track. Injured a shoulder in round 21 and sat out the club’s only final.

2005
Although still completing his VCE studies at Yarra Valley Grammar, early injury strife for Anthony Rocca meant that Cloke was elevated into the senior team on Anzac Day against Essendon. Made a very encouraging debut (16 disposals and one goal) and was one of the few reasons for optimism during a bleak winter.

Strung some solid performances together as the side won three games in succession mid-year. Received an AFL Rising Star nomination in round 10 after helping the side to a win over Hawthorn.

Began to taper later in the year but did nothing to diminish his fantastic debut season, which the club recognised when he was honoured with the Harry Collier Trophy as Best First Year Player.

2004
Played for the Eastern Rangers in the TAC Cup U18 competition. Represented Vic Metro at the U18 National Championships. Announced that he would be joining Collingwood under the Father-Son rule (his father David had played 114 games for the club between 1983 and 1989) in August, joining his older brothers Jason (76 games) and Cameron (21 games).

Premium Player Rating (FWD) - 9/10 I have to look at 2012 as an aberration and expect Cloke to return to 2011 form. The player is elite both a powerful contested mark (even in a shocking season he led the AFL in contested marks for 2011), a powerful long kick which was also a straight one for much of 2011. He is extremely mobile comes up the ground and has a tank that few key defenders can run with for 4 quarters. The high rating comes not only on the quality of the player but on the relatively cheap price we should get him for in 2013. The CueStick coming to the Pies is also a plus for Cloke as he (Lynch), will not be left free likes Dawes has been at times allowing Cloke to be double teamed on every inside 50.

Rating based on; elite in his position, return to form expected, discounted price.

An impressive athlete, Martin was one of the League's biggest improvers in 2011. He filled the ruckman/forward role with success, averaging 17 possessions a game and finishing eighth in the best and fairest. He displayed great competitiveness and mobility around the ground and used the ball well, stepping up in the absence of No. 1 ruckman Mark Jamar. Is also capable of playing in defence.

in 2012 - Played an early game and a half, and unsurprisingly his services were no longer required. Reappeared later in the season to play 5 games a couple of good ones and a couple of average ones. Injured his foot and out for the season. The overall result 2012 a write off for the big man.

Mid Priced Player Rating (RUCK) - 5.5/10 Not a chance in the world you can go anywhere near him at Melbourne. Jamar the clear #1 Ruck at Melbourne nad when fit will start every week. Gawn was Gawn for the season with injury, but with a big pre-season under his belt he will play more games in the ruck than Martin will, a giant second only in height to Sandipants, Gawn is the next big thing. If Martin goes to a club, like Collingwood with an ageing #1 ruck prone to injury late in their career he may be worth a look, if he goes to a club like Geelong or Port without a star #1 ruckman (yet) he may be worth a look. But you don't start him unless you see me updating this article close to season start with articles explaining how whatever club he has gone to are using him as their starting ruck every match and he is killing it in Nab Cup. For now don't even consider him in your plans no matter how attractive the price tag.

At 27 years old next season his career may have one chance left of continuing but it isn't going to be at Melbourne, contracted for one more year so will need a trade.

Rating based on; No job security, No form, Limited opportunity and potential to score at Melbourne.

Quick tall defender with great closing speed. Task orientated with strong defensive skills and a sound ability to read the play. Vic Metro U18 representative in 2009. 2.95secs for 20m, 8.20secs for agility (both top 15 per cent) were super impressive at Draft Camp.

Key position defender that runs off and can use his pace in midfield. Plays a lot as a "shut-down" type player but likes running off the lines and attacking as well. Not particularly solid so I use my run and jump rather than body on body.

2011 = Misses the better part of the season with a hamstring.

2012 = Misses the better part of the season with a hamstring.

Mid Priced Player Rating (DEF) - 6.5/10 A slightly generous rating for a young key defender. Grimes spoils far too much to warrant serious consideration in any DT side, spoiling is for SC not DT. Being developed as a key defender in the Tigers back line he has had 3 hamstrings, serious ones, in as many seasons. Cutting edge surgery in Germany has apparently put all that behind him. The reason for the slightly increased rating I give is that Grimes has always had a fair measure of attack in his game, and with the addition of Chaplin from Port to the tigers back line and the injection of Delidio into the midfield there is some chance as he develops further that Grimes will be given some license to attack out of defence, which is in DT what we want our defenders doing. I wouldn't start him unless he looks like he is playing a role in the NAB Cup which has him racking up possessions as a running defender, unlikely however as he is a key defender.

Noz will be home from work soon, look forward to them all. Especially the new faces, but it will be good to compare 2012 players written up to the write up on them in 2013 also.

might be able to pat myself on the back for my foresight in 2012, or I might be red faced if it didn't end up how I suggested it might in 2012 :)

Can we put up draftees or would you like to wait until the draft? also can you please do an article on Sam Reid.

Sam Reid

#20   Sydney Swans
Age: 20yr 9mth    Games: 46     Born: December 27, 1991
Height: 195cm     Weight: 91kg     Position: Forward
Last Drafted: Round 3, Pick #38 2009 National Draft
Last Drafted By: Sydney Swans

The youngster showed his enormous potential in 2011 and it was no surprise the Swans signed him to a new five-year deal at the end of the season.

Held down centre half-forward all season, sitting out just one game in round 24 due to calf tightness.

Has terrific hands and led Sydney with 45 contested marks.

Needs to add bulk to his frame and improve on a return of 22.26 in front of goal but has all the hallmarks of a future star.

Coaches' call:

2011 was… a really consistent year. He continually plays his role week in week out without too much fuss. I thought for him, his first year of senior footy playing at centre-half-forward was really positive.

His pre-season has been… better than last year when he had a really short pre-season. This year he has pretty much done everything so it’s been a ripping pre-season for him. He’s made massive strength gains â€" upper body and lower body â€" his fitness has improved and he improved across the board significantly so he had a good pre-season.

In 2012 we want to see… we’re not putting too many expectations on him, just a natural improvement. You will start to see improvement naturally because of the strength gains he’s made in the gym and some fitness gains as well he should be able to cover the ground a bit better. Still, we’re just looking for him to play his role.

Player honours: NAB AFL Rising Star nominee 2011.

Draft history: 2009 NAB AFL Draft 3rd round selection (Sydney) No. 38 overall.

What we DID see in 2012? We saw 30+ Goals and some natural development, we saw him hold his spot and play most games, we saw him gain invaluable experience. We saw him and his DT average go nowhere from his 2011 level.

What we need to see now is a big bulking up in the off/ pre season and we may have the next Hawkins in terms of suddenly arrived developing KPP FWD.

Mid Priced Player Rating (FWD) - 7.4/10 Ok so a number of people would have jumped on this bloke last season given his price, position in a top 4 club and likelihood of breaking out. Like so many breakout candidates lately he has not come through in the 3rd year. Being a key forward you may want to temper expectations of him again this coming season, they take a LONG time to develop. If however you see him muscled up and much heavier and looking like Hawkins in the nab cup, then you will know the time probably is not far away and getting on may be a good idea indeed. I won't touch him if he looks like he does now but if he bulks up over the pre season and is priced at the lower end of the mid priced scale I will seriously consider him. Sure to improve on 2011 and 2012 disappointing numbers but the question is will he improve to a 70 average or a 90 average. Either would be a good result if you start with him next season.

Being the #2 KPP FWD Behind Tippett will alos have it's own set of effects on his scoring.

Rating Based on; Breakout candidate, Top 4 team, KPP, Should be the next Hawkins but in 2013 or 2014? Now the #2tall behind Tippett
