Drafted Round 2 Pick 44 Sydney

Marsh is a decent sized, agile backman who performed well with East Fremantle in the Colts during 2012. He played 17 games, racking up more than 20 touches a couple of times and kicking 9.8 while scoring 45, 91, 85, 55, 63, 62, 84, 47, 60, 66, 74, 44, 93, 52, 58, 53 and 38 (Ave: 63). In the Champs he played 3 games but was far from prolific, registering scores of just 43, 40 and 23. Harrison has shown the ability to be more than just a stopper given his excellent second place in the repeat sprints at the Combine but his scoring is never likely to be spectacular and considering he is at the Swans the potential likelihood of game time in 2013 looks slim at best.

Kevin Sheehan says: A prodigious kick of the football with excellent defensive skills who likes to attack and take the game on. Shows very good vision and disposes of the ball very effectively either by hand or foot. A very good one-on-one defender that played three games for WA in the NAB AFL Under 18 Championships. Currently averaging 15.5 disposals and 4.4 marks per game in 14 matches for East Fremantle at Colts level.

Sydney Swans Recruiting Manager Kinnear Beatson says: "Harrison Marsh is a young boy from Margaret River who just came up to East Fremantle this year so 2012 was a bit of a learning curve for him. He’s around 188cm mark, he’s powerful, quick and good around stoppages. He’s got a bit to learn but that’s OK because he’s a good kid, he applies himself and all of the reports on him have been really good."

Hey Craigy, just got a quick question for you :)

Who do you think should average more next year, Wines or Stringer. It looks like I'll only be able to start one or the other, for instance:

Wines + T. Lee (or other fwd rookie)

or

B. Kennedy (mid) + J. Stringer (fwd)

Stringer was able to average so much this year due in part to his ability to play through the midfield but I'd question whether he'll get much of an opportunity to do that with the Dogs (at least initially ) given they have drafted Macrae, Hrovat, Hunter, Goodes...along with already having Boyd, Griff, Libba, Wallis etc. So I could see Stringer playing more off half forward and averaging around the 65-72 mark.

Wines on the other hand will be in the guts, he averaged a very impressive 7.5 tackles a game this year along with gathering more than 30 disposals a few times. He has less competition and I could see him averaging closer to 75-80. He'll probably shadow what Coniglio did this year, starting off a little slowly but putting in some good 90+ scores when he gets going.

The forward rookie prospects look to be a real worry. The best potential scorers in Menzel, Kennedy, Dwyer, Daniher, McDonough all have issues with JS or injury so we'll pretty much have to take what we can get. I've spoken before about my belief that Lee can replace Milera in the role he played for 15 games in 2012. I don't think he's going to make a bundle of money but I see him as one of the safer rookie options at his price. At least that's my assessment with 3 months still to go until the season starts.

So of those combos I'd go with Wines and Lee. :)

Dan Currie

Drafted Round 3 Pick 56 North Melbourne

Despite not getting a game for the Swans during his 5 year stint at the club, Currie did show some promise. After overcoming a series of frustrating injuries he was able to put in some solid performances during 2010 and the following year he dominated the NEAFL Eastern Conference, being named the winner of the Mulrooney Medal as best and fairest despite only playing 11 games. 2012 saw Currie moved to S.A and play for North Adelaide where he played 21 games and had DT scores of 53, 68, 38, 42, 56, 121, 67, 86, 83, 103, 70, 92, 25, 93, 82, 49, 79, 64, 61, 75 and 93 (Ave: 71.4).

Currie will be competing with Majak Daw for the second ruck spot at North Melbourne and whoever looks like winning that duel in the pre-season will loom as a viable bench selection for 2013.

Kevin Sheehan says: Former Sydney Swans Senior Listed player (2007-2011) with great athleticism as well as strong hands in marking situations. Very direct with hit-outs as well as follow up work when the ball hits the ground. Won the NEAFL League B & F in 2011 showing great improvement since departing the Swans.

Xavier Richards

Drafted - Rookie Draft Pick 29 Sydney

The not so little brother of Ted Richards has joined his sibling on the Sydney list as a rookie. He was surprisingly overlooked in last year's draft but continued to apply himself as an overage player with the Dragons, playing 17 games for the season. He is one of those tall, versatile players that clubs crave having already proved the ability to go back or forward along with pinch hitting in the ruck. Xavier's TAC scores for the season are about what you might expect from a KPP prospect but he had a few very promising DT games - 92, 60, 126, 89, 20, 34, 59, 59, 139, 78, 61, 52, 47, 28, 67, 46 and 39 (Ave: 64.4). He also played a couple of games in the VFL but only managed scores of 18 and 39.

Richards will have competition from the likes of Jake Lloyd and Dane Rampe for any available senior upgrade spot and I can't really see it eventuating but I guess stranger things have happened.

Kinnear Beatson says: Xavier's shown that he can play at both ends of the ground. He split his year playing in the TAC Cup with the Sandringham Dragons, but also played some games with the Sandringham Zebras in the VFL. With Xavier, we were looking for a key position player and he is keen to come up here and have a run. He's got work to do as all rookies and draftees do, but all the boys we've taken we believe have good heads on their shoulders, they're intelligent young kids, they're fit and we're confident they'll apply themselves really well.

Dane Rampe

Drafted - Pick 37 Rookie Draft Sydney

For someone who didn't take up football seriously until the age of 17 Rampe has made great strides. The Sydney native trained with the Western Bulldogs in 2010 but failed to win a place on their list. Then in 2011 he spent a year playing for Williamstown in the VFL before returning to NSW this season where he ended up winning the Howarth Trophy along with the Phelan Medal as AFL Sydney's best and fairest.

Unfortunately I don't have access to any Dream Team data but I get the impression he was quite the ball winner. What I can tell you is that he was named in the best for 9/18 games this season and kicked 22 goals. Being on the Sydney rookie list doesn't do much for his fantasy prospects but he seems like an interesting one.

Beatson says: Dane Rampe is another great story for us. He's the utility type. Dane's a little bit older and is approaching about 22 and is a born and bred Sydney boy who grew up playing the game here in Sydney. Then a couple of years ago he moved to Melbourne and played with Williamstown in the VFL to further his football. In 2010 he was a bit stiff missing a rookie spot with the Western Bulldogs but persevered and then at the end of 2011 returned back to Sydney for family reasons and played locally here with the University of NSW. He also played with NSW in the Australian Country Championships where Ric Barham, one of our recruitment consultants, recognised his potential.

Brant Colledge

Drafted Round 3 Pick 45 West Coast Eagles

Like fellow Eagles recruit Adam Carter, Colledge is splitting his time between football and completing a law degree. Injury hampered the utility's 2012 season and he didn't set the world on fire at the Champs with just two games and scores of 34 and 40. His eight games in the Colts were more promising, averaging 19.3 disposals, 8.2 marks and just over a goal a game. His DT scores were 87, 48, 129, 134, 114, 66, 61 and 78 for a healthy average of 89.6. Brant is a good size and can play a variety of roles so that enhances his prospects of playing at some stage in 2013. Given that he can win a bit of the ball and has DPP status, he's one to look at for a downgrade should he earn a senior position.

Kevin Sheehan says: Kevin Sheehan says: “Hard working player who presents with multiple leading efforts and has strong hands in the contest. Uses the ball well by hand and foot and has overcome an ankle injury which restricted him to the last two matches in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships. Been in excellent touch at Colts level of late, averaging 20.1 disposals and 8.4 marks in the past seven games.”

Eagles coach John Worsfold says: "The (recruiting) boys say Colledge is a really powerful boy, he could play next year physically. They're confident with that. I always say you really don't know that until you get to about March and you have a look at how they've handled the pre-season workload and where they sit."

West Coast List Manager Craig Vozzo says: “He's a 192cm mobile utility. He's played majority forward but potentially can play back as well in that third tall mold. He's a really good young man who we ranked quite highly, so we're delighted he was available at our pick. He was someone we tracked through the entire year. I think he'll be more of a development player, but he's a really good young man and he's fairly physically developed. He had a bad ankle injury this year. He'll take a little bit of time, but not all that long. And he'll be knocking the door down, I'm sure.

Drafted - Pick 8 Pre Season Draft Fremantle

Hannath trained with Melbourne before being stolen by Freo in the pre season draft. The 21 year old has been playing in the SANFL seniors for a couple of years and while he doesn't get a heap of ball he's proven to be a consistent performer. From his 22 games in 2012 Jack had DT scores of 56, 59, 55, 75, 41, 51, 92, 49, 52, 49, 101, 66, 89, 65, 51, 76, 69, 47, 65, 72, 60, 41 (Ave: 62.7). Quite a few times he gave away 6 to 8 free kicks in a game which really hurts.

Obviously with Sandi, Griffin and Clarke around it's hard to see Hannath coming into calculations but I guess Fremantle drafted him in the hope he'd play at some stage in the future. Should the ruck carnage of 2012 continue you never know what might happen.

Kevin Sheehan says: Young developing ruckman who reads the game well and always looks to provide a target around the ground. Has the ability to play as a key defender or forward that can drift forward and kick goals on occasion. His foot skills and decision making are very good as are his football smarts. A very mobile player that covers the ground well, he has established himself as a regular player at Senior level for Central Districts.

Lloyd says: Jack's a ruckman from Central District and he's really developed well over the last year or two. He's only 21, but he's been able to really compete well with the big-bodied ruckmen in the SANFL, so we think he's ready to take the next step. We'd watched him training at Melbourne (and) we were aware that there was some interest from other clubs. Jack was one we needed to take with one of our pre-season picks otherwise we don't think we would have got him.
