holy shower, McRae averaged 90 in state champs this year? :o

depending on where he goes he might be a POD midfield rookie

keep up the good work Mr Craig :)

Yeah, he was one of the only Vic Metro boys to put in 5 good scores. Even in the game vs Vic Country where the average DT for the game was 51 he scored 84.

wow, didn't realise he got so much of the footy! definitely worth a look now!

I need to keep telling myself that DT scores aren't an indicator of a good AFL player, otherwise this lad would definitely be pencilled in!

I think that's called the Couch rule. :)

Formerly known as the Bradd Dalziell rule !!

James Stewart

Birthday - 4/3/94
197cm/82kg
Sandringham Dragons
Price/Position - $102,700 Fwd

Drafted Round 2 Pick 27 GWS

Stewart is a beanpole of a kid who was overlooked for a father/son selection by Collingwood. He might not be generating the same interest as fellow KPP's like Clurey and Jaksch but he's still got qualities which should see him become a decnt AFL player. Having started his career as a midfielder, a growth spurt has resulted in James becoming a forward who can also play back or even have a go in the ruck (although it will be several years before he has the muscle to do that at senior level).

Stewart suffered stress fractures during this season which set him back but he managed to play 3 games in the Champs for scores of 100, 38 and 24. From his 9 TAC performances he kicked 10 goals and took 33 marks (however 11 of those came in one single game). His DT scores were 59, 53, 61, 91, 32, 40, 41, 51 and 66. If his development continues then he may prove to be a handy recruit but as those numbers suggest, he will struggle to be DT relevant any time soon.

Kevin Sheehan says: “Tall forward with outstanding agility for his size. Very poised with his disposal by hand or foot and can play at either end of the ground or through the midfield. Has good game sense and natural pace. Is eligible for father/son to Collingwood, where father Craig played. Represented Vic Metro in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships with his best game vs TAS gaining 23 possessions including 15 contested and six marks. Graduate of the AIS-AFL Academy.”

Dragons Regional Manager Ryan O'connor says: "He's 197cm and he can basically run like an onballer. He has the athleticism of a wingman. He has fantastic foot skills and is very good with his hands. He just needs to keep working on all the attributes of contested football - like positioning as a key forward and key back. But the reality is he hasn't played that much in those roles.''

Fixed. :-[ Dunno how that happened. And now I see the bloody YouTube vids aren't working. Will try to sort that out.

That's better. :)

A few years ago they all wanted a Pendlebury or Dangerfield, well...

Now there are some amazingly talanted players all well under the 180cm mark, what does this mean for the draft selection and, what for the future of footy?

Ziplock

there are some talented kids under 180cm atm... the issue is, under the 180 mark, unless you have absolutely freakish natural abilities, you're just too small to play anything really more than F/B pocket.

JBs-Hawks

How about the other James Stewart? :P

I think it's probably just a quirk of this year's draft. Next year we'll see Billings (182cm), Aish (181cm), Hogan (193cm) and Kelly (180cm) who all still have some more growing to do until they top out.

Kevin Sheehan names his top 30 draft prospects...

http://mm.afl.com.au/Portals/0/2012/shifters-top-30-2012.pdf

Compared to my prediction he rates Broomhead, Corr, Graham, McBean, Wood and Wright higher than Colquhoun, Haynes, Towers, Pongracic, Tanner Smith and Shaw.

It wouldn't surprise me if he got most of those right but Mason Wood ahead of Mason Shaw? I'm not sold on that. However Jay Clark seems to be a fan of Wood aswell, suggesting today he "could be the next Jeremy Cameron" -

Guess I'll be doing a profile on him then.

Mason Wood

Birthday - 13/9/93
192cm/80kg
Geelong Falcons
Price/Position - $102,700 Fwd

Drafted Round 2 Pick 41 North Melbourne

Wood is a forward/wingman for the Falcons who has come into draft contention partly due to his strong combine results. He played a role in the Under 18 Champs this year as an over-age player, being named in the best vs Vic Metro and recording DT scores of 79, 60 and 34 from his three games. Mason's performances in the TAC are better than I'd orginally thought, with a fantasic kick/handball ratio, 23 goals and 94 marks (25 contested) for the season. His scores were 119, 74, 76, 90, 55, 95, 127, 71, 92, 70, 102, 107, 44, 104 and 61 (Ave: 85.8).

I have to swallow my pride and say that this kid is a better player and a better potential DT pick than I had initially given him credit for. It remains to be seen how much senior action Mason will get in 2013 but I have my hopes.

Kevin Sheehan says: “Left footed tall forward who presents well on the lead and is strong overhead. Averaged 13 disposals for Vic Country this year in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships with his best game against their arch rival, Vic Metro. Has elite endurance and work rate and is capable of playing as a wingman as well. Has clean hands, good vision and excellent awareness.”
