Ok we all get itchy fingers when we see players we don't have tearing it up and while we watch players we do have being subbed and scoring shower.

I for one and last years SC winner for two, think using trades is essential to being competative in fantasy footy. However there are only so many and wasting them on sideways knee jerk trading is dangerous.

Every trade you use must be of points benefit to your side permanently.

This is how I think it best to use your trades in a perfect world this season and you might have very different ideas and please feel free to post. But for the newer or first year D
SC'ers out there this kind of warning is very helpful before you hit round 15 and your out of trades and injuries start to happen more and more and you can't field a full side by round 22.

6 - Bye trades (rookie upgrade downgrade trades not sideways hopefully)

These trades used to minimise donuts during bye rounds by trading rooks up and down accross the bye rounds to have your structure best to minimise donuts on the field over the 3 rounds.

6 - LTI (for long term injured premiums)

These trades used to trade out sideways injured players that are out for 6+ games. eg. Hayes-boyd (last season)

10 - Upgrade / Downgrade rookie trades (in addition to the bye trades upgrading and downgrading rooks)

These trades plus the 6 used during the bye rounds are to upgrade rooks that have reached thier max price to premiums, the extra money made by likewise downgrading another rook at max price to a new rook.

*{working on the maximum of 16 which is 8 up 8 down so if you start with 14 premiums you need 8 more to fill your field - give or take you probably won't get 8 upgrades but once again in a perfect world..}

2 - spare dissaster trades (missed rookies - failed premiums/ mid pricers)

These are trades used to pick up a "kennedy or clay smith  you missed for a ledger *if he doesnt play or couch for example you may have picked instead BEFORE thier price increases which is after thier 3rd game, so if your after a rook you missed you do it after round 2.

Or you can use them to get rid of a failed premium or mid pricer you picked sideways for one that is performing, hard to make this call so early but if done before round 3 you avoid paying more for the player who is killing it that you want.

= 24 total trades

As I said many will have very different ideas but this I thought just a handy guide to slow down the new fantasy players who will be EXTREMELY tempted to Sunday night trade this week.

i will certainly be using my emergency trades :)  but i had always planned them into my trades just like i am signing up for a free supercoach gold trial thursday before week 3 lockout so i can see projected prices etc before i decide to use them on

Ringo

Just to modify slightly I am using this strategy but as can happen all well planned strategies can come apart:

8 Trades to Round 10
6  trades for Round 11-13
4/6 Trades Rounds 13- 19
Leaving 4/6 trades for Finals. (Always seem to run out of trades for finals and end up losing leagues)

mpollock

I plan on using 20-22 trades by round 14 and expect my side to be set!

I will trade sideways, backwards (i.e a player out and back in again), downwards, upwards and any other way i can think of if the trade "feels right".  My instinct is generally very good but i am normally way to conservative and sensible to run with it ...  but not this year.  I scored 2118 which is ok for round 1 considering i had McDonald/Magner/Bugg on the pine and Parker subbed early ... so my score could easily been much better.

From round 14 i will really on lady luck and either win the car or crash horrible (more like it.)

I am determined to finish either in the top 50 or way, way down ... but no nice safe finishes around the 1000 mark any more!!

that strategy won someone $50K last season so why wouldn't you! (unless like Ringo says you want league wins and bragging rights in the leagues :) )

mpollock

I figure if I win 50k I will also win my league and have bragging rights  ;D

If i flop then at least i gave it a red hot go ... now hurry up lockout ... I want to TRADE!!

Parker, Broughton, M.Clarke, Morris you are all in serious danger!!
Even considering Mumford to Ryder trade ... along side a Parker to C.Smith trade.
Then use the money for my two compulsory trades after round 2 to jump on whoever is hot!

Shaggy

Well I have aleady used my fist 2 trades due to work being crazy the last couple weeks I hadn't got round to finishing my SC. (My DT was finished and set)

Having a few rookies that did good in preseason but didn't play, 4 donuts in the forwards due to them and Dayne Beams on top of it left me with a hole that needed replacing. Cooyou to Kennedy and Panos to Milera covers that up. Leaves me still with Hoskin-Elliot and Pfeiffer who both will end up getting games at their clubs.

Unfortunately, the 1,843 is going to stick due to my inability to set my side properly in time but in the long run, the 2 trades used now should see me through to round 3-4 when I will use more.

mpollock

I struggle with the same problem when the teams are announced.
I live in Manila so had the 3 hr time diff as well and work blocks all fantasy sport sites making it hard to do last minute changes.

Good luck ... you trades make sense to me.

i think the strategy only worked because we had 3 on the bench instead of 2 so when players got rested or injured you were less likely to cop a donut

Im going ridiculously hard with trades, putting it all on the line. Thats why Im not knee-jerking now.

Capper

last year i was left with 8 trades for the last 4 rounds which enabled me to trade in and out premiums who had the bye. This year will be leaving about 5 for the last 5 rounds. Shouldn't need anymore than that

Lot's of different ideas, thoughts and strategies, yet in the end it may all come done to lady luck. Someone above mentioned trading out Parker, hmmn injured just into the 3rd qtr and scored 64 and playing this week, don't think so. Reckon it all comes down to when you think your team is right to sit on, that is, can ave high scores untouched consistantly. Then hopefully lotsa trades left. My target is 4 before the byes - money making     4 during the byes  10 for the last 5 rds  and 6 for whatever I haven't taken into account. Having said that if I can get anywhere near it I'll be rapt. Not after league or overall wins, would accept them but would be accidental. Chasing 1k and the car so have a totally different strategy. Lot's of fun and goodluck to all. Cheers.

Cannot see Mummy to Ryder being anyway positive enough to waste a trade.....
Since 3 of the 4 people on you block are backs, I would suggest starting there after round 2. Clarke to best rookie then upgrade Broughton

mpollock

Actually went Parker to Stanton (risky I know but going with my gut - 7 x 100+ scores in a row so may have turned the corner in terms of consistency ... worst case he will average 90s again like previous years and as my 6th midfielder at the end of the year that isn't bad) ...  and traded Hale to Milera. (Hale not playing the role he did in the NAB so no longer part of my strategy ... also Giles/Redden look ok so don't really need him as a backup plan).

Next week will look to get Mohr in (probably for Morris) but will continue to monitor broughton.

Tempting to downgrade Mummy to one of the performing mid priced rucks ... Ryder and Kruizer are at the top of my list ... gives me money to get another premium into my back line fairly quickly.  May hold off a few weeks on this till end of round 3 ... depending on their B/E etc (some more data on the early bolters always gives you more confidence taking a punt on someone.)

tom_scully

With the bunch of rookies set to arrive in the next few weeks are extra trades early the way to go this year. Thinking Darley Zoroko Mlies etc
