Hello, as my first post I thought I would post my fanplanner team. Don't worry, I plan on being a contributor to this board, but only if I see fit. I don't pretend to or think I know everything about Supercoach/football, so will only offer up my opinion if I genuinely believe it is right. So I may not post straight away.

Thoughts welcome on my team. Believe it to be something different. I found defenders and midfielders (M3 & M4) the hardest to pick, so that's why my defence contains a couple of risks, and my midfield is basically rookies.

First of all I made what I want my team to look like at the end of the year. I came up with something like this (in other words, my prediction of best average players in each position):
Goddard, Deledio, Enright, Suckling/Birchall, Lake, Broughton, Scotland/a risky pick that paid off

Pendlebury, Ablett, Swan, Murphy/Judd, Cotchin/Mitchell, Selwood/Swallow/Watson

Mumford, Sandilands/Cox/Goldstein/Leuenberger

Franklin, Johnson, Goodes, Martin, Zaharakis, NRiewoldt, Sidebottom/Fyfe/Rioli

So I then inched my way into the salary cap. As I was confident of my forwards, I loaded up there, and had rookies in my R2, M3, M4, and a couple of other spots due to salary cap and not being sure of who I wanted there.

So my team as of Jan 22* 2012.

Rookie mid approach Fanplanner squad in the Super Coach competition coached by RHC123. Salary cap left: $27,000.

Brendon Goddard, Brett Deledio, Corey Enright, Matt Suckling, Nathan Grima, Brian Lake, Brandon Ellis
Lee Spurr, Billie Smedts

Scott Pendlebury, Gary Ablett jnr, Joel Selwood, Stephen Coniglio, Darren Pfeiffer, Dylan Shiel
Dayne Zorko, Luke Brown

Shane Mumford, Jonathan Giles
Sam Rowe, Orren Stephenson

Lance Franklin, Steve Johnson, Dustin Martin, David Zaharakis, Nick Riewoldt, Adam Tomlinson, Ahmed Saad
Lucas Cook, Matthew Panos

So now 3 premium midfielders and 5 gun forwards, as opposed to 2/6...I like how the team is shaping up.

With my 27k, I am either going to
1) try and turn Selwood into Swan (need another 30k to do that, could drop Tomlinson and Saad into 113k players),
2) turn Suckling into Birchall
3) Keep it to maybe buy rookies like Horseley who aren't that bottom price

I like your strategy. I think the right idea is to pick players based on two reasons.
A- They will be one of the top scorers in their position
or
B- They will make money to help you achieve the best scoring players in each position.

I like most of the premium picks but would probably have Birchill/Broughton instead of suckling.

Fwds are very heavy, and I think you have just gone too light on in your mids. You will just be losing too many points over the first 6-8 weeks. I would drop one of your premiums elsewhere in order to fit another premium in here. If I had to pick, I would downgrade Riewoldt to spare up some cash (or even goodes, he starts seasons notoriously slow) and upgrade Coniglio or Docherty to a premium of your choice, any of your list of mids above your side would be good, though I would go for Swan, Murphy or Selwood. If you need a little extra cash to do this you could downgrade Lake or Grima to Mohr, or another rokoie back. This would still only leave you two starting rookies in fwds and def, but drop the risky 4 rookies in the mids to 3.

Love your strategy with a goal in mind.
Personally I have the same strategy but differ slightly in that I am aiming for a minimum of 3 guns in Def, Mid and Forward and 1 Ruck for starters. If can get more in then fine.

Regarding your team at the moment
Backs: Just Personal but I would not have Enright mainly due to the fact he is aging and his SC scores have dropped over the last couple of years. But apart from that ok.
Mids: Big risk here at start relying on 4 rookies to get good scores.
Rucks OK with the Prem 3 rook strategy
Forwards: As you say very strong but a little heavy at start,

Just a couple of suggestions for you maybe downgrade Goodes to a rookie.  Goodes over the last couple has averaged in the 90's for the first half of the season and 115+ for the second half so I would be looking at an upgrade when his price bottoms out. Use cash to get one of your mid keepers Murphy, Selwood or Swallow.
Also watch the NAB cup to gauge rookies both Horsely and Pfeiffer are on rookie lists and need to be promoted and Docherty getting over hip surgery as well.  You may also pick up a cheaper rook with same potential as Coniglio and save $ eg Clifton scores better than Coniglio select him and save $60k.

Just because of Mids weakness 7.5/10 but plenty to work with with goal in mind.

First off, thanks for the advice.

MIght go goodes -> rookie, then rookie -> selwood.

Just want to make sure I have a lot of pod, but will definitely take on board both your advice.

I don't think enright will drop out of the top 10 for defenders And he's a safe durable type who provides a contrast to lake and grima. Which I don't think people take into account.

Interesting about goodes, might have to do some more research tonight then be primed with knowledge of players to make accurate judgements on other teams.

thanks again

Are you going for overall?  The reason i ask is your theory is terrific to end up with a gun team come finals but in the first 8 weeks, you'll be getting soundly beaten.  Mids do the bulk of the scoring.  Guys like ablett will get you 130 odd a week.  So although mid rookies generally get decent scores (70-80) , they are still 50 points short of gun mids.  Fwds/ def is different.  Rookies avg less (60-70) but premium backs get 100 each week.  ( thats a 30 point disparity). See what im getting at?

RHC123

Yep but I sort of disagree. Most mids really only get you 120ish at best, I got the 130ers, so I'm really only missing out on 10ish, but Franklin, Martin and zaharakis I reckon could smash out 110 and higher, meaning I miss out on less.

Yes I miss out on a few points, but for a point of difference I'm prepared to take it.

I'm going for a good overall ranking, don't believe I know how to utilise my trades and have the experience (2012 be my 3rd year) to challenge for a top 100 rank, so I'm hoping for top 1000 this year with some luck.

Thanks for the advice, I'm still learning so It's much appreciated, but will definitely be getting a 3rd gun mid at least..selwood probably.

Updated first post.

Won't be changing my team for a while now. Just going to let it settle as pre season ends and NAB Cup starts and see if I still like the structure/premiums.
