I wanna keep a running thread going of my draft theorys over the off season so I can look back on it and see how my thinking progressed and how many mistakes I made along the way, so even though it's ridiculously early here's my first draft

Backs
Deledio, Gibbs, Broughton, Suckling, Lake, Buntine, Bower, Docherty, ???

Mids
Pendles, Ablett, Mundy, Coniglio, Wingard, Caddy, Shiel, O'Meara

Rucks
NicNat, Ryder, DerrickX/Cordy, Giles

Forward
Fyfe, Pav, Petrie, Zaharakis, Hurley, Callinan, Hoskin-Elliot, ???, ???

Just fill in the ??? with cheap rookies once I flag a few in the draft.

haha, am doing the same! a few things from my point of view:
- although Bower is great value, i'm not sure he is on Carlton's way of thinking...i'm tipping they want Watson and McCarthy are in their plans for the future. Will only play if we're struck down with injuries.
- like your mids but maybe a bit pricey with Coniglio and Wingard?? also O'meara won't be in til 2013 btw.
- like your Rucks but don't think they will be in the top 4 or so season's end which is what you really need
- Petrie's a good POD so long as he runs out the season. Not sure on Hurley and Callinan - particularly Hurley. Unless you're planning on keeping him as a premium (ie. 90+ which i'm not sure he'll attain) i think there is much better value around - especially in the forward line! ie. Grant, Patton or some good rookies: Saad, Zorko.. or spend a bit more and get a real premium...by culling some pricey rookie mids! :)

Haha, will have to trade out O'Meara then lol. I definitely want Hurley, I reckon he's set for a massive one. Coniglio and Wingard are in there because I wanted to start out with the most pricey rookies and still have a good team, that way if other cheaper rookies outshine them I'll be able to use their cash to upgrade other weak areas. Callinan will likely be first to go in that event. I reckon NicNat and Ryder will score very highly, I also don't think they'll miss many, if any, games, and that's what I'm wanting from my ruckman after Sandi and Mummy went haywire last season. Ryder went away and sorted his head out half way through last season and I reckon came backa  much better player for it. NicNat is just a freak and with another preseason under his belt I reckon he's due.

Bower is only in there because I don't know enough about the cheap defenders in the draft at this point. Petrie is in there for the R/F with Ryder, if he loses R/F I'll likely drop him. Would like to fit Jack Watts into my forward line somehow, with Mitch Clark in the team he might get released up the wing a bit in the same way Richo was in his last season.

Voldemort

I'd like to see Swan in that team- but that's cause I'm biased.

Rucks needs to be set from the start, Nic Nat is not a great SC or DT player yet, he has bursts of greatness but otherwise reamins quite. Cox and Leunb./Sandi/Goldie/ Mummy will get you through the whole season with a lot of points (unless injury strikes).

Really like you mids, try and put in another premium- if you can.

Hurley stills needs to prove himself, current he is a kpp, if he does a Cloke, all the better, but most likely he wont (for a few years), so id say someone else.

Really good vibe to your team though  ;)

Backs Lids, Broughton, Hartlett, Suckling, Petrenko, Buntine, Docherty (Ellis, Morris)

Mids Pendles, Watson, Cross, Coniglio, Wingard, Grigg (Kavanagh, Shiel)

Ruck Goldy, NicNat, Giles, Orren S

Forwards Franklin, Pavlich, Beams, Zaharakis, Fyfe, Christensen, Hoskin-Elliot (Saad, Zorko)

I swear this was the easiest sit down in front of Fan Planner I have ever had. Team pretty much picked itself and came in with 48k to spare! Haven't even begun to look at the byes at this stage till I get definite confirmation of how they're gonna work next year. Plenty of MPP players but none in a position to actually use it hahaha, but I seriously wouldn't know who to leave out of any spot to move things around, I am that in love with this team.

Different to most teams posted

Playing 3 rookies in the mids is a concern but you have a couple of DPP to assist.

Not a Hartlett fan but that is just personal.

Ok, here's my take on your team....

DEF: I think your backline is a bit light on, most people are gonna have at least 2-3 premiums here, Hartlett & Suckling dont quite cut it. Petrenko?

MID: Not a fan of Cross, upgrade him. 3 x rookies starting on-field is risky.

RUCK: Pretty good.

FWD: I guess this is where the money went. Its strong, but I feel you'd need to downgrade one of these guys to fund a mid/def upgrade or two. Also, dont rate Beams.

5/10

As far as I'm concerned I have 4 prems in my backline - only 12 defs averaged above 90 last season and I have 4 of them, plus I feel Suckling and Hartlett will improve and I have Petrenko marked down for a huge season, watched him closely last year.

Cross offers awesome value, he won't be playing that negative role again this year and when set loose to play his natural game is as consistent as they come. Not worried about starting 3 rooks, mids is where the most cash is to be made and the kids most likely to be played regularly. All I need is to make sure I've got the libba/curnow/heppell of 2012 in there and I'll be sweet.

My plan is to stack as many M/F into my forward line as possible, key forwards can fluctuate in scoring based on the success of the team as a whole, dual position players are more likely to push upfield and generate their own scores. Something I've been thinking of doing for a while, going all out this year. Beams happens to fall into that category and I'm happy to take someone who averaged over 100 last year who fits my mold.

A very interesting strategy with M/F DPP which may pay off.  Pav, Beams, Zaha, Fyfe,Christensen, Hoskin Elliott and Zorko all meet your criteria in forward line.
Maybe need to also look at some other mid/prem if following strategy Goodes. O'Keeffe. Dangerfield, Chappy as still not fussed with only 3 starting prems in mid. Cross could be a unique for you even with changed role last year still averaged 95SC points so if he reverts to pre 2011 roles will be great (averaging 106 points for 2005 - 2010)
Another rookie to keep eye on in mid seasom is Tory Dickson who I thought would go higher in the draft than he did.

newfreofan

**Team made on the SC gold team planner, found it a LOT harder to fit in as many premiums. Prices are a fair bit higher across the board. Finding it almost impossible to put together a good team while trying to cover byes so may not even bother. Expect my rookies to be traded up a fair bit by round 11, though tried to minimize rookies with byes in rd 11 so I have them as cover then can upgrade them in rounds 12 and 13 to prems that have already had their byes. Gonna be a mega balancing act haha.

Defenders Lids, Bock, Broughton, Adcock, Docherty, Ellis, Morris (Bugg, Blee)

Mids Ablett, Murphy, Priddis, A. Swallow, Wingard, Shiel (Kavanagh, Grigg)

Rucks Mumford, NicNat (Giles, Stephenson)

Forwards Fyfe, Pavlich, Martin, Zaharakis, Porplyzia, Saad, Zorko (Rowe, Kerridge)

55k remaining

Very different from where I started on the fan planner, but yeah the cost differences and differences of positions for some players will make all current fanplanner teams redundant anyway.

SAMCRO

Isn't Bock suspended for the first couple of rounds?

I've always been a fan of Broughton but last year he annoyed me, and probably a lot of other coaches. Will be interesting to see how he goes with a new coach.

Luigi197

I haven't done enough research to comment on the rookies yet, but i'll do my best for your updated team :)

Bock is suspended as Samcro pointed out, plus i dont think he will do much good anyway.
3 starting rookies in the BAC is a risk.

The rest is very good, 9/10 :)

newfreofan

Haha, a new team every day but I'll be able to look back on this and see at what point I went wrong :) managed to figure out a pretty decent looking team with only 2 starting rooks in the backs/mids/forwards, feeling a lot more confident about things at the moment.

Backs Lids, Shaw, Broughton, Adcock, Heppell, Docherty, Ellis (Morris, Blee)
Mids Ablett, Murphy, A. Swallow, Barlow, Wingard, Shiel (Kavanagh, Mitchell)
Rucks Mumford, NicNat (Stephenson, Giles)
Forwards Fyfe, Martin, Zaharakis, Brown, Porplyzia, Saad, Zorko (Rowe, Dickson/Kersten)

Reckon there's much better value in this team, more depth anyway.
