For my first emergency pick, I choose...

..."Soapy".

He's the one on the left....

Harry "Soapy" Vallence is arguably the greatest full-forward ever to play for Carlton; and one of the greatest full-forwards of all time. In a senior career that spanned 21 years (Carlton 1926-1936, 1938; Williamstown (VFA) 1937, 1939-1942; Brighton (VFA) 1945-1946) he played over 250 games (actual number unkown) and kicked 1166 goals!

When he joined Carlton in 1926, the coaches had a hard time deciding where best to play him, throwing him into all different positions around the ground. After three years, they finally decided to put his incredible overhead marking talents to good use, playing him at full-forward. The rest the say, is history. :)

In an era dominated by great full-forwards like Coventry, Pratt, Mohr and Moriarty, he only ever once won the Coleman Medal (prior to 1955 it was just known as the Leading Goalkicker Award), but he managed a staggering 8 leading goalkicking awards at Carlton. His representative chances were very slim too, playing only 4 games, yet amazingly kicking 17 goals.

In 1937, he had a failing out with Carlton and was selected by Williamstown in the VFA as their captain-coach. After heaving negatiations, he was lured back to Carlton in 1938, where he went on to win a premiership with Blues. Amazingly, he left Carlton again in 1939, again playing for Williamstown. In the first season back, he kicked 133 goals (including 18 goals in a match!) and helped Williamstown to a premiership. He played at Williamstown up until 1942 when the league was stopped due to the war.

After the war ended, he decided to move to Brighton to become their captain-coach. In his final game in 1946, at the age of 41, he played one of his best ever games, kicking 11 goals!  :o :o

His career achievements:

  • 250+ games (Carlton 204, Williamstown and Brighton unknown)
  • 1166 career goals (Carlton 722, Williamstown 337, Brighton 88, Victoria 19)
  • VFL Leading Goalkicker 1931
  • Carlton Leading Goalkicker 1929, 1931, 1931, 1933, 1935, 1936, 1937, 1938
  • Carlton premiership 1938
  • Williamstown Leading Goalkicker 1939, 1940, 1941
  • Williamstown premiership 1939
  • Victorian represenative (4 games, 17 goals)
  • Member of Carlton "Team of the Century" and the AFL Hall of Fame

Welcome aboard Soapy. Another '1000+ goals' goalkicker to the team. Incredibly surprised he hadn't gone already... ???
