Summary:

Just about the definition of a 'unique' player, Collingwood's Ben Johnson has had the potential to score well, but a couple of injury prone years and question on his kicking efficiency has made him a non-starter for most coaches. As demonstrated by his recent stats:

2005: 72.6 (13 matches)
2006: 90.5 (22)
2007: 78.4 (19)
2008: 70.1 (16)
2009: 68.1 (11)

But last year saw Benny J hit almost career best form. He was inconsistent though, with four scores below 50. Johnson is an important player for Collingwood.

The Crystal Ball:

Based on last year's magic number

Price: $419,300
Position: MID

Ben Johnson could very well match 2010's performance, and maybe  go close to his 2006 average of 90. He is not a premium, and doubt he ever will be, as he approaches 30 years and 200 games. My guess will be for him to perform admirably for some parts of the year, while in other parts - either due to form or injury or both - will be below his average.

One thing that could impact my decision on whether to pick him or not, would be if was became a MID/DEF multi-positional player. Though I doubt this will happen.

Decision:

I tried doing one of these threads on a unique player, and thought Ben Johnson was as good as any. For mine, he is way too pricy and injury prone to risk selecting him, and I will be staying away. Having said that, his 133 in round 20 would've been more than handy in a Semi-Final, but then he missed the Grand Final....

Ben Johnson on your radar?

He was last year. Didn't make the cut in the end.

Looked at him briefly this year, then decided against it. He definately can score on his day. But can he score well with the other Collingwood mids consistently?

roo boys!

If Collingwood have a year as good as this one again, he could be a top tier unique.

Hawka

mayb may b better uniques around the price

I will probably have a look at him but I doubt I will end up with him, he is an option though.
I just think that there are better options around that price (or there will be) and less injury prone! Has Ben ever played a full season?

22 games at an average of 90 in 2006 was his best effort.

Alex7089

Hmmm, not to bad...I suppose I have plenty of time to think about it 'eh!

roo boys!

Yeah I think I am the same Alex, I will have a look at him but doubt I will end up with him, but you never know, he could perfectly fit a gap left to fill.

Alex7089

Yeah, we won't really be able to decide until SC opens up and we can mess about with our teams again...UNtil then we can only speculate.

just dont really like him. he is getting on a bit and he is one of the last picked for collingwood IMO. Am just not willing to pay that much. would rather spend it on brennan or pay a bit more for a premium.
